onstrated the possibility for quantitative SPECT-CT of bone turnover in a specific prosthesis design. Meanwhile, a systematic bias caused by metal implants on quantitative SPECT data has to be considered.
The results of this study demonstrate the need for the evaluation of SPECT-CT protocols in prosthesis imaging. Phantom experiments demonstrated the possibility for quantitative SPECT-CT of bone turnover in a specific prosthesis design. Meanwhile, a systematic bias caused by metal implants on quantitative SPECT data has to be considered.Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) are obligate aerobic Gram-negative bacteria that are commonly used in vinegar fermentation because of their strong capacity for ethanol oxidation and acetic acid synthesis as well as their acid resistance. However, low biomass and low production rate due to acid stress are still major challenges that must be overcome in industrial processes. Although acid resistance in AAB is important to the production of high acidity vinegar, the acid resistance mechanisms of AAB have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we discuss the classification of AAB species and their metabolic processes and review potential acid resistance factors and acid resistance mechanisms in various strains. In addition, we analyze the quorum sensing systems of Komagataeibacter and Gluconacetobacter to provide new ideas for investigation of acid resistance mechanisms in AAB in the form of signaling pathways. The results presented herein will serve as an important reference for selective breeding of high acid resistance AAB and optimization of acetic acid fermentation processes.
Improving outcomes of older patients admitted into intensive care units (ICU) is a raising concern. This study aimed at determining which geriatric and ICU parameters were associated with in-hospital and long-term mortality in this population.
We conducted a prospective multicentric observational cohort study, including patients aged 75years and older requiring mechanical ventilation, admitted between September 2012 and December 2013 into ICU of 13 French hospitals. Comprehensive geriatric assessment at ICU admission and ICU usual parameters were registered in a standardized manner. Survival was recorded and comprehensive geriatric assessment was updated after 1year during a dedicated home visit.
501 patients were analyzed. 108 patients (21.6%) died during the hospital stay. One-year survival rate was 53.8% (IC 95% [49.2%; 58.2%]). Factors associated with increased in-hospital mortality were higher acute illness severity score, resuscitated cardiac arrest as primary ICU diagnosis, perception of anxiety tly evaluated in routine care. Clinical trial registration NCT01679171.
The mortality rate remains high among older ICU patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Factors associated with short- and long-term mortality combined geriatric and ICU criteria, which should be jointly evaluated in routine care. Clinical trial registration NCT01679171.The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has significantly impacted cancer patient management. National and local recommendations to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission have been applied in a comprehensive cancer center located in Northern France. We prospectively measured key indicators for three successive eight-week periods directly before, during, and right after the containment (from 16 March to 10 May 2020). Overall, the number of newly diagnosed and referred cancer patients in our hospital steadily increased (1027; 1135 and then 1704; +11% during containment and +50% just after). To reduce patient transportation, teleconsultations were implemented. Teleconsulting activity steadily increased during the three periods (5, 2025, and 2351). However, a marked decrease in the number of surgical procedures was observed (448; 330 and 288; -26% during containment and -13% just after). We observed a slight decrease in the number of radiation therapy sessions (7761; 7328 and 7075; -6% during containment and -3% just after) and in day-hospital cycles of IV systemic treatment (2891; 2736 and 2717; -5% during containment and -1% just after). We observed an increase in the number of patients admitted to palliative care and a dramatic reduction in clinical trial enrollment. During this 24-week period, organizational changes were mainly characterized by an increase in newly diagnosed cancer patient referral and the implementation of protective measures, such as teleconsultations. Activities in cancer surgery have decreased while radiotherapy and chemotherapy activities were stable.Longitudinal studies evaluating the association between visceral fat area (VFA) and kidney function decline in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are limited, and little is known about VFA interactions contributing to the kidney prognosis (e.g. interactions between VFA ≥ 100 cm2 and age, sex, and CKD category). In this study, we stratified patients with CKD according to VFA category, as well as age, sex, CKD category, hyperglycemia, and diabetes mellitus, and determined the ability of obesity-related indicators (body mass index, waist circumference, subcutaneous fat area, visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio) to predict the renal prognosis. Kidney outcomes (≥ 50% estimated glomerular filtration rate decline or end-stage kidney disease) were examined in 200 patients with CKD (median follow-up, 12.3 years). On multivariable Cox analysis, an increase in VFA (10-cm2 increase) was significantly associated with kidney outcomes in the entire cohort, and VFA was significantly associated with kidney disease progression even in the VFA less then 100 cm2 sub-cohort. Interestingly, the hazard ratio (HR) was higher for VFA (10-cm2 increase) than for the VFA ≥ 100 cm2 sub-cohort (HR 1.33 vs. 1.07). Overall, VFA was found to be the most versatile obesity-related indicator associated with kidney disease progression. CX-5461 VFA was associated with the primary outcome in the sub-cohorts of CKD stages 1-2, hyperglycemia, and diabetes mellitus. A high VFA was a significant kidney prognostic factor in the entire CKD cohort, with greater significance in patients with VFA less then 100 cm2 than in patients with VFA ≥ 100 cm2. Our results may provide new insights into strategies for treating CKD.
