Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment in medically resistant cervical dystonia (CD) with a documented therapeutic effect. Long term outcome beyond a decade, however, has not been studied systematically.
To investigate the impact of pallidal DBS beyond 10 years in CD we followed a series of five consecutive patients with severe medication-resistant CD. Severity of head and neck deviation, disability, and pain related to dystonia were assessed by the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) in the frame of a prospective study. The primary endpoint of this study was a change in the TWSTRS total score. Secondary endpoints were changes in the subscores of the TWSTRS.
The mean follow-up time was 11.5 years (range 10-12.8). Comparing baseline and the last follow-up, CD improved by 53% on the total TWSTRS score, by 54.1% on the severity score, and by 70.1% on the disability score, while pain did not improve significantly. Improvement was stable over time. Patients with a tonic pattern of CD responded less to DBS than patients with a phasic pattern. DBS had no significant effect on mood and cognition. Two patients underwent electrode revisions. One patient had an infection of the proximal cable two years after surgery.

Results may vary among individual patients.The Southern Corniche of Jeddah (SCJ) is located on the centre of the eastern Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia and is increasingly affected by many anthropogenic activities, making it vulnerable to pollution. Sixty-three sediments and water samples were examined in regard to environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH), grain size, organic matter (OM) and carbonate content and metals concentrations (Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, and Co) in order to assess the level of contamination in SCJ's bottom sediment. The results showed that the highest concentrations of heavy metals in the shoreline and Lagoon areas are mainly due to the influx of domestic and industrial wastewater into the area where they were correlated with mud, OM, salinity and pH. The contamination factor (CF) for Fe and Co in the bottom sediments exhibited higher values than the threshold 3 value, particularly in the Lagoon and Al-Budhai area. The pollution load index (PLI) values of sediment samples could be classified as contaminated samples, especially in the nearshore samples indicating an increase of metals accumulation with decreasing distance from the source area. PCA has shown that Fe and Mn are positively correlated with all heavy metals, probably due to their high adsorption capacity in the presence of DO. The metals were Normalized with Fe, it was found that the bottom sediments of the SCJ could be reported as metal contaminated and mainly affected by natural and human sources.In this study, we investigated the specific bacterial distribution and the response of bacterial communities to shifts in environmental factors in the subtropical Beibu Gulf, southern China. The abundances of Actinobacteria, Bacilli, Planctomycetia, Thermoleophilia, Anaerolineae, and Synechococcophycideae were significantly higher in high eutrophic samples than in medium eutrophic and oligotrophic samples. Bacterial alpha-diversity was found greater in high eutrophication samples than in the other samples. Besides, Ponticaulis koreensis, Nautella italic, Anaerospora hongkongensis, Candidatus Aquiluna rubra, and Roseovarius pacificus were sensitive to trophic variation and thus could be used as eco-markers. In addition, the relative abundances of functional genes involving carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism were very high among the samples. We also found temperature, Chl-a, TDN and NO3- were the main environmental drivers of bacterial community structure. Overall, this study provides new insight into the composition of bacterial community and function response to gradients of eutrophication in Beibu Gulf.In this study we assessed the effects of the recurrent disposal of dredged material from the Guadalquivir estuary (south-western Spain) in a marine disposal area. We analysed shifts in sediment characteristics as well as bioaccumulation and biomagnification of heavy metals through the benthic food web. Results showed that the significant increase in concentration of some heavy metals observed in the marine disposal area after the latest disposal event could be attributed to the deposition of river-dredged sediments. This increase could also explain the decreased amphipod survival in the ecotoxicology analysis. Heavy metal concentrations in organisms indicated some bioaccumulation in deposit feeders and predators but with no clear patterns nor biomagnification through the food web. Hence, combining studies that monitor shifts in sediment characteristics and their possible consequences for the food web seems to be an interesting approach that should be assessed further in this type of studies.Pollution in aquatic ecosystems is rapidly becoming one of the world's greatest ecological challenges. Given their intermediate position between terrestrial and marine environments, estuarine systems are especially vulnerable to human pollution. Amazonian estuaries have unique characteristics, such as heterogeneous landscape intercalating tracts of vegetation with sandbanks and beaches. In the present study, we provide the first qualitative and quantitative data on litter retention in an Amazonian estuary, comparing vegetated and bare substrate areas. Overall, 12,003 items were recovered, with a mean ± SD density and weight of 1.69 ± 2.16 items/m2 and 78.08 ± 93.11 g/m2, respectively. Plastic was the principal material (80.97%) found.
