This is the first report of total external ear amputation in the horse. Complete auriculectomy via use of a constricting latex tourniquet is a feasible method for en-bloc removal of large, complicated ear masses.Intestinal probiotics are a primary focus area of current medical research. Probiotics such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli can positively impact obesity and other metabolic diseases by directly or indirectly affecting lipid metabolism. However, the precise mechanisms of these effects remain unclear. In our previous work, the novel strain Lactobacillus reuteri HI120 was isolated and identified. HI120 expresses high levels of linoleic isomerase, resulting in the production of large amounts of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) when mixed with linoleic acid (LA). As HI120 can efficiently transform LA into CLA, the effect of HI120 on the lipid metabolism in C57BL/6 obese mice was studied and the underlying molecular mechanism was explored in vitro. The results revealed no significant change in the diet, body weight, and serum triglyceride levels in mice. However, serum cholesterol levels were significantly decreased. The underlying mechanism may involve a CLA-mediated reduction in the gene expression levels of NPC1L1, SREBP-2, and HMG-CR, resulting in reduced cholesterol synthesis and absorption. Thus, HI120 can be developed as a potential probiotic formulation. After oral administration, LA from certain food sources can be converted into CLA in the human intestine to contribute to the prevention and treatment of obesity and hyperlipidemia.Specifically designed gene expression studies can be used to prioritize candidate genes and identify novel biomarkers affecting resilience against mastitis and other diseases in dairy cattle. The primary goal of this study was to assess whether specific peripheral leukocyte genes expressed differentially in a previous study of dairy cattle with postpartum disease, also would be expressed differentially in peripheral leukocytes from a diverse set of different dairy cattle with moderate to severe clinical mastitis. Four genes were selected for this study due to their differential expression in a previous transcriptomic analysis of circulating leukocytes from dairy cows with and without evidence of early postpartum disease. An additional 15 genes were included based on their cellular, immunologic, and inflammatory functions associated with resistance and tolerance to mastitis. This fixed cohort study was conducted on a conventional dairy in Washington state. Tanespimycin Cows >50 days in milk (DIM) with mastitis (n = 12) were pathogen-induced inflammatory responses. Although further research is warranted to explain their functional mechanisms and bioactivity in cattle, our findings suggest that these conserved elements of innate immunity have the potential to bridge disease states and target tissues in diverse dairy populations.Working dogs help to keep society and individuals safe, secure, and healthy. To perform their varied functions, it is critical to select dogs that are structurally sound and capable of demonstrating power, coordination and agility. Characteristics such as size and substance, head and axial skeletal structure, chest size and conformation, and thoracic and pelvic limb angulation should be evaluated to select the optimal combination of characteristics to suit the tasks to which each dog will be assigned. This review provides guidance on how to evaluate each of these structural components and discusses the contributions of those body parts to a working dog's function. The use of rapid-acting insulin analogs as routes of administration other than IV has never been described for the treatment of dogs with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of a new protocol based on IM administration of insulin lispro with that of low-dose IV continuous rate infusion of regular insulin in the treatment of canine DKA. Client-owned dogs with naturally occurring DKA were included. Dogs treated with IM insulin lispro (Group L, n = 11) received 0.25 U/kg. The goal was to achieve a drop of at least 10% in blood glucose between 1 h and the next. If this goal was not achieved, the insulin dose was repeated hourly; otherwise, the insulin dose was not repeated up to a maximum of 3 h, after which the insulin dose was repeated anyway. When blood glucose was ≤250 mg/dL, the insulin dose was reduced to 0.125 U/kg IM every 3 h. Cases receiving IV continuous rate infusion of regular insulin (Group R, n = 13) were treated according to a previously published protocol. The median time to resolution of ketosis was significantly shorter in Group L (12 h; range, 4-27 h) compared to Group R (23 h; 10-46 h; P = 0.04). The median times to resolution of acidemia and ketoacidosis were 13 h (4-35 h) and 17.5 h (4-35 h) in Group L, and 22 h (9-80 h) and 23.5 h (10-80 h) in Group R, respectively. These differences were not significant (P = 0.06 and P = 0.09, respectively). The median length of hospitalization did not differ significantly between groups (P = 0.67). There were no differences in the frequency and severity of adverse events (hypoglycemia, hypokaliemia, and hypophosphatemia) between groups. The new protocol based on IM administration of insulin lispro preliminarily appears effective and safe for treatment of canine DKA.The need to reduce antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock production has led to the establishment of national AMU data collection systems in several countries. However, there is currently no consensus on which AMU indicator should be used and many of the systems have defined their own indicators. This study sought to explore the effect of using different internationally recognized indicators on AMU data collected from Irish pig farms and to determine if they influenced the ranking of farms in a benchmarking system. AMU data for 2016 was collected from 67 pig farms (c. 35% of Irish pig production). Benchmarks were defined using seven AMU indicators two based on weight of active ingredient; four based on the defined daily doses (DDD) used by the European Medicines Agency and the national monitoring systems of Denmark and the Netherlands; and one based on the treatment incidence (TI200) used in several published studies. An arbitrary "action zone," characterized by farms above an acceptable level of AMU, was set to the upper quartile (i.
