Drying-induced decrease in lip balm surface energy enhances virus adhesion due to the emergence of strong hydrophobic colloid-surface interactions.

A protocol was developed for preparing lip balm coatings to enable physicochemical characterization and adhesion studies. Surface charge and hydrophobicity of four brands of lip balm (dry and hydrated) and human adenovirus 5 (HAdV5) were measured and used to calculate the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) energy of interactions between lip balm coatings and HAdV5 as well as four other colloids HAdV40, MS2 and P22 bacteriophages, and SiO
. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) tests employed SiO
colloids, HAdV5 and hydrated lip balms.

Drying of lip balms results in a dramatic decrease of their surface energy (δΔG
≥ 83.0 mJ/m
) making the surfaces highly hydrophobic. For dry lip balms, the interaction of the balm surface with all five colloids is attractive. For lip balms hydrated in 150 mM NaCl (ionic strength ofsts with SiO2 colloids and HAdV5 confirm deposition on hydrated lip balms.Heavy metal pollution as well as improper fertilization management represent serious threats to a clean environment and healthy food. This study was conducted to investigate how nitrogen supply influences a plant's ability to cope with cadmium stress in the two wheat cultivars - the modern cv. see more Katya (carrier of the semi-dwarfing gene Rht8) and the old cv. Slomer. Here we examined the effects of 100 μM CdCl2 on both wheat genotypes grown hydroponically under three different nutrition regimes of 5.5, 10 and 20 mM NO3- by investigating plant growth, pigment content and the functional activity of the photosynthetic apparatus through a combination of PAM chlorophyll fluorescence, P700 photooxidation, oxygen evolution and oxidative stress markers. Data showed that the different genetic background affects the different strategies for metal uptake and allocation, as well as abilities to deal with oxidative stress. The modern cv. Katya restricts the entry of the metal to the roots, but allows its translocation to the shoots. Nevertheless, the photosynthetic performance indicated better protection, possibly mediated by the Rht8 allele. In contrast, the old cv. Slomer tolerates higher cadmium levels in roots and possesses efficient barriers against its transfer to the shoots, but still showed more impaired photosynthetic activity. In general, the impact of cadmium on the photosynthetic apparatus was most deleterious under the lowest nitrogen concentration which was applied, while the highest nitrogen supply alleviated the negative effects of cadmium. The data suggest that the modern breeding allele (Rht8), as well as a better nutrition might contribute to the tolerance to heavy metal stress in the wheat.Tidal algal reefs are considered high biodiversity habitats but have received little attention. Macrobenthos communities were characterized in a gradient of habitat types on the tidal flats in northwestern Taiwan, including algal reefs (R), mixed algal reefs and gravel (RG), mixed sand and gravel (SG) and sand (S). Both hydrodynamic movement and surface rugosity were highest in R, followed by RG, SG, and S. The faster the movement and the higher the rugosity were, the higher the density and taxon richness of the macrobenthos community. The relatively slower movement and accumulated sand in S likely resulted in stress on organisms, which led to a lower density and taxon richness of the macrobenthos community. Our results suggest that the main factors structuring the macrobenthos community in the diverse habitat types were hydrodynamic movement and surface rugosity. The leakage of any substances at the sea bottom consequently leads to contamination. The polluted area will strongly depend on the type of pollution which can be dissolved, material and the physical state of the bottom layers. Although the systems that monitor the particles or pollution on the sea surface already exists, there is no similar tool for the bottom area. This work aims at developing the High Resolution Dispersion Model (HRDM) that calculates transport of the pollution in case of potential leakage from chemical ammunition dumped into the Baltic Sea. The model has been embedded into existing operational system that covers the whole region of the Baltic Sea. Thus, it consists of the three main elements operational atmospheric model that makes calculations every day, coupled ice-ocean model covering the whole Baltic Sea area and HRDM. The horizontal resolution of the atmospheric part is about 10 km, the coupled system is driven on 2.3 km grid and HRDM is implemented on 50 m horizontal resolution. The clients are able to make integration since 2014. Access to the system is granted via REpresentational State Transfer (REST) API that separates user interface from the server site. It is possible to make simulations for instantaneous and continuous type of leakage. The results are served in binary form (as a netcdf file) and as a georeferenced tiff picture. The temporal resolution of the output data is 1 h. The HRDM consists of half-life of sulfur mustard and the results for both - with and without half-life calculations are included in the output files. The HRDM has been created as a part of Decision Support System and is not (and will not be) available for public. The tracheal cartilaginous sleeve (TCS) is a rare, difficult to diagnose airway malformation in which segmented tracheal rings are replaced by a solid sheath of cartilage. TCS is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis, and early diagnosis is essential. We report a case in which ultrasound (US) was used to diagnose TCS in a patient with Pfeiffer syndrome. This is the first case demonstrating the use of US as the initial tool to diagnose TCS. The case supports ongoing research investigating the use of US as a screening and diagnostic imaging modality for TCS.
The aim of this study was to retrospectively document prevalence rates of delayed-onset hearing loss (DOHL) under 7 years old after passing the newborn hearing screening (NHS) program using its database in Okayama Prefecture, as well as records from Okayama Kanariya Gakuen (OKG, Auditory Center for Hearing Impaired Children, Okayama Prefecture, Japan). We explored the percentage of children with DOHL among all children who underwent the NHS and surveyed risk factors abstracted from their clinical records.

We collected data of 1171 children, who first visited OKG from April 2006 to March 2018. DOHL children were defined as bilaterally hearing-impaired children who were diagnosed under 7 years old after passing the NHS at birth. Based on the medical records, we investigated age at diagnosis, hearing levels, and risk factors. As population-based data of 168,104 children, the percentage of DOHL subjects was retrospectively calculated among the total number of children who underwent the NHS in Okayama Prefecture from April 2005 to March 2017.
