s part of their microvascular reconstruction and avoid secondary NAC reconstruction procedures.
Nipple reconstruction can successfully be performed in microvascular breast reconstruction using free grafts. Although partial graft hypopigmentation is common, smaller areas of graft loss or depigmentation are anticipated and do not affect aesthetic outcomes. The use of free NAC grafts may allow additional patients to use their own nipples as part of their microvascular reconstruction and avoid secondary NAC reconstruction procedures.
The aim of this study was to compare the resulting short-term complications after simultaneous (SIM) or staged (ST) tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) in patients that presented with bilaterally torn cranial cruciate ligaments.
This was a retrospective study.
Medical records of dogs diagnosed with bilateral cranial cruciate ligament disease that underwent bilateral SIM or ST TPLO surgery with arthroscopy (2005-2015) were reviewed to evaluate the intra- and postoperative complications. Data were analysed and major and minor complications were compared between the two groups.
A total of 176 client-owned dogs (352 stifles) that had TPLO performed bilaterally with SIM or ST procedures were included for analysis. The overall complication rate was 47.5% for the SIM group and 19.5% for the ST group. The incidence of major complications was 10.1 and 3.8% in the SIM and ST groups respectively. Minor complications were 38.4 and 15.6% in the SIM and ST groups respectively. Tibial tuberosity fractures requiring revision were noted in 2% of the SIM group and none of the ST group.
Although no significant difference was noted in major complication rate or tibial tuberosity fractures in our cohort of patients, a Type II statistical error was found. The complication rate in the SIM group is numerically greater by a factor of 2-3× or more for nearly all categories. Surgeons should consider the risks and benefits of SIM versus ST procedures as well as relevant individual patient and client factors before electing either alternative.

This study aimed to analyse the distribution of the laxity indices (LI) in a dog population, to compare the LI with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) grades and to search for differences of LI between breeds.
The database was composed of all dogs presented to the University Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Ghent for obligatory hip screening between January 2016 and February 2019, and all patients presented to orthopaedic consultation between January 2017 and January 2019 for a complaint of hindlimb lameness, which underwent both a standard extended ventrodorsal radiograph of the hips and a stress radiograph revealing hip joint laxity. The latter was obtained by means of the Vezzoni-modified Badertscher distension device and the LI was calculated. For each dog of the population, the LI was then compared with the FCI grade.
The LI values ranged between 0.15 and 1.04, with a mean of 0.46. The LI and the FCI grade increased together, and showed a moderate-to-good correlation. There was a highly significant overall difference in the mean value of LI per FCI grade group (
< 0.001). The mean LI of the Labrador Retrievers was slightly but significantly lower than the mean LI of the Golden Retrievers (
< 0.01).
The LI calculated on a stress radiograph taken with the Vezzoni-modified Badertscher distension device shows a good correlation with the FCI grade assigned on a standard extended ventrodorsal projection. A wide range of passive hip joint laxity exists in dogs considered to be phenotypically normal based on the FCI grading method.

The aim of this study was to report the surgical technique and outcomes of dogs with type V central tarsal bone (CTB) fractures stabilized with a bone plate applied to the medial aspect of the tarsus and metatarsus.
This study was a retrospective review of dogs with type V CTB fractures diagnosed with computed tomography and stabilized using a medial bone plate. Follow-up included clinical examination and radiography 8 to 10 weeks postoperatively and/or a long-term owner questionnaire.
Six dogs were identified. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/pf-06650833.html All fractures occurred during exercise without external trauma and all dogs had additional tarsal fractures. Five dogs returned for clinical follow-up; all had no or mild lameness and evidence of fracture healing on radiography. A suspected surgical site infection occurred in one dog and resolved with medical management. Suspected contact between the plate and medial malleolus in one dog, and loosening of a talar screw in another, were identified, though not treated. Five owners completed the questionnaire, a median of 88 months postoperatively. No further complications were reported, limb function was reportedly acceptable, and all owners were very satisfied with the surgery.
Medial bone plate stabilization of highly comminuted CTB fractures resulted in evidence of fracture healing, and a low incidence of complications in six non-racing dogs.
Medial bone plate stabilization of highly comminuted CTB fractures resulted in evidence of fracture healing, and a low incidence of complications in six non-racing dogs.Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the main cause of long-term neurodevelopmental morbidity in term born infants worldwide. Melatonin is a hormone with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that make it a promising molecule for the treatment of perinatal asphyxia. Probably, the synergistic use of hypothermia associated with melatonin treatment may improve the neurological outcome in infants with HIE. In the past 20 years, the efficacy of melatonin in reducing oxidative stress has been demonstrated in animals; however, clinical trials with sufficient sample size of newborns are lacking to date.Since in 2000 we were among the first to study the neuroprotective properties of melatonin on infants, in this review, we want to summarize the advantages and limitations of the investigations conducted to date. KEY POINTS · HIE is the main cause of morbidity in term born infants worldwide.. · Melatonin is a promising molecule for the treatment of perinatal asphyxia.. · This review summarizes advantages and limitations of the investigations conducted on melatonin.
