We present a cross-sectional analysis of industry funding to editorial board members of high-impact surgery journals. We reviewed top US-based surgery journals by impact factor to determine the presence of financial COI in members of each journal's editorial board. The prevalence and magnitude of COI was determined using 2018 industry reported payments found in the CMS Open Payments database. Journal websites were also reviewed looking for the presence of editorial board disclosure statements.

We performed a retrospective study of adult patients who underwent surgery between January 1, 2019 and October 31, 2019. The primary outcome was the composite incidence of an emergency department visit, readmission, or reoperation within 30 days of surgery. Secondary outcomes were postoperative pain, satisfaction, quality of life, and regret collected via postoperative survey. A multilevel, mixed-effects logistic regression was performed to evaluate differences between groups.

In a cohort of 22,345 patients, mean age (standard deviation) was 52.1 (16.5) years and 13,269 (59.4%) patients were female. About 3175 (14.2%) patients were not prescribed opioids, of whom 422 (13.3%) met the composite adverse event endpoint compared to 2255 (11.8%) of patients not prescribed opioids (P = 0.015). Patients not prescribed opioids had a similar probability of adverse events 11.7% [95% confidence interval (CI) 10.2%-13.2%] vs 11.9% (95% CI 10.6%-13.3%]. Among 12,872 survey respondents, patients who were not prescribed an opioid had a similar rate of high satisfaction [81.7% (95% CI 77.3%-86.1%) vs 81.7% (95% CI 77.7%-85.7%)] and no regret [(93.0% (95% CI 90.8%-95.2%) vs 92.6% (95% CI 90.4%-94.7%)].

The outcomes associated with receipt of adjuvant radiation in patients following surgery for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) are poorly understood.

The objective of this study was to use two registries to compare the outcomes of patients receiving adjuvant radiation or no radiation following definitive surgery for pathologic stage I-III MPM.

Patients with resected pathologic stage I-III MPM were identified from the Duke University registry (1996-2016) and National Cancer Database (2004-2015). A total of 212 institutional and 1615 NCDB patients met criteria. In both cohorts, patients who underwent radiation were more likely to have margin-negative resection and more advanced pathologic stage. Duke patients who received radiation had similar incidence of recurrence and time to both overall recurrence and ipsilateral recurrence (HR 0.87; 95%CI 0.43-1.77) compared to those who did not. Duke patients experienced 100 grade 1/2, 21 grade 3/4, and one grade 5 toxicity events during radiation.

It has expanded the spectrum of disorders associated with X-linked mental retardation and defects in sterol metabolism. There are only a few reports defining the phenotypic spectrum of this rare disorder. We describe a new patient from the Indian subcontinent who presented with dysmorphism, global developmental delay and epilepsy. We also add left ventricular concentric hypertrophy and sensory neuropathy, which have not been reported previously. Our report suggests that CK syndrome may be unrecognized due to limited clinical knowledge and restricted availability of genetic testing. The expansion of the phenotype may also lead to a better understanding of biochemical anomalies and management approaches.
