Canine – scientific classification for domestic dogs
Feline – scientific classification for domestic cats
Subjective – the presenting complaints and medical history obtained.
Objective – The exam finding and hard numbers (such as vitals).
Assessment – This is the doctor’s evaluation of the exam findings and test results (diagnostics).
Plan – The decided course of treatment for a patient to be carried out.
Diagnosis – The condition determined by the doctor that is afflicting a patient
Prognosis – The severity of a condition and projected outcome
Treatment – The course of action to treat a disease or illness
Radiograph – The image produced when exposing special film to x-rays. (Note: a radiograph is what is
interpreted by the doctor, x-ray is the wave of radiation, radiology is the study of radiographs.)
Rule Out – A list of possible diagnoses the doctor is concerned the patient may have.
Abbreviations and Short Hand
TPR – Temperature, pulse, respirations. M or MI – Intact Male
BP – Blood Pressure N or NM – Neutered Male
CRT – Capillary Refill Time F or FI – Intact Female
BCS – Body Condition Score S or SF – Spayed Female
V/D/C/S – Vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing
Vaccines
Canine:
Rabies – Abbreviated RV – Given every 1 to 3 years depending on age of the patients and
vaccine history. In patients over one year of age typically they are given a 3-year vaccine.
Distemper – Abbreviated DA2PP or DAPP - Given every 1 to 3 years depending on age of the
patients and vaccine history. In patients over one year of age typically they are given a 3-year vaccine.
Leptospirosis – Abbreviated Lepto or LV – Given yearly. Typically, only in dogs that go hiking,
camping, or come in partial contact with wildlife.
Bordetella – Abbreviated Bord or BV – Given every 6 months to a year depending on the route
given (Intranasal or oral or injectable – dependent on the clinic administering and the
boarding/grooming facility requirements).
