Of the participants whose infants had ever experienced diaper rash, 72% (n=448) reported improvements, and 57% of those reported complete resolution of this problem. Of those who responded to questions about gassiness/fussiness, naptime sleep, and night-time sleep behaviours, 63% (n=984), 33% (n=520), and 52% (n=806) reported resolution or improvements, respectively. Although clinical data regarding probiotic use are often inconclusive for symptom resolution, home use of B. infantis EVC001 in infants improved diaper rash, gassiness/fussiness, and sleep quality within the first week of use in a significant number of respondents who engaged in a voluntary post-purchase survey. These outcomes may be a result of the unique genetic capacity of B. infantis EVC001 to colonise the infant gut highlighting the importance of strain selection in evaluating the effects of probiotic products.Until now it has been Professor Elie Metchnikoff, a Russian researcher and scientist, who has been considered the discoverer of probiotics. In the early 20th century he associated the longevity and good health of Caucasian peasants with their consumption of a type of yoghurt containing strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus which were supposed to destroy the harmful microbiota of the intestines. However, at least a dozen years prior to Metchnikoff, a Polish doctor and scientist Dr. Józef Brudziński planned, conducted and described a study in which he applied a Bacillus lactis aërogenes suspension in treatment of infants with acute infectious diarrhoea. Here, we briefly characterise this study. Undoubtedly, apart from his fame as the neurologist who described meningeal symptoms, he deserves to be regarded as the true 'Father of probiotics'.
This study investigated the modulatory capacity of two Solanum green leafy vegetables;
(African eggplant AE) and
(Black nightshade BN) on dysregulation of some antioxidant, pro-apoptotic, pro-inflammatory-like, acetylcholinesterase gene expression and redox status in the
model of aluminum-induced neurotoxicity.
Flies were exposed to AlCl
(6.7 mM) alone or in combination with the leaves (0.1 and 1.0%) from both samples in their diet for seven days. Thereafter, the fly heads were rapidly separated, homogenized, and used to assay for reactive oxygen species (ROS), total thiol content, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, and the expression of antioxidant-mediators (Hsp70, catalase, cnc/Nrf2, Jafrac1 and FOXO), acetylcholinesterase (Ace1), pro-apoptotic caspase-like (Dronc) and its regulator (reaper), as well as inflammation-related (NF-kB/Relish) genes.
Results showed that AlCl
-exposed flies had significantly reduced survival rate which were ameliorated by AlCl
also elevated ROS, GST and reduced AChE activities in fly heads while dietary inclusions of AE and BN ameliorated survial rate and oxidative stress in AlCl
-exposed flies. In addition, Hsp70, Jafrac1, reaper and NF-kҝB/Relish were significantly upregulated in AlCl
-exposed fly heads, while cnc/Nrf2 and FOXO were significantly downregulated, but catalase, Dronc and Ace were, not significantly modulated. Nevertheless, these impairments in gene expression levels were ameliorated by dietary inclusions of AE and BN during AlCl
exposure.
These findings showed that dietary inclusions of AE and BN leaves offer protection against Al-induced neurotoxicity in
and thus, could serve as functional foods with neuroprotective properties.

In December 2019, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Invasive Fungal Infections Cooperative Group and the National Institute of Allergy and the Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium published a revision and an update of the consensus definitions of invasive fungal disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the signs and radiologic patterns of early-stage invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in computed tomography in patients with hematologic entities according to the latest criteria.This retrospective analysis of a baseline high-resolution computed tomography included neutropenic patients with hematological malignancies and probable invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. The data were collected between the years 2017 and 2019. Computed tomography was performed within 72 h from the beginning of clinical symptoms fever, dyspnea or nonproductive cough. CT scans were analyzed by two independent radiologists according to the standardized protocol based on predefined criteria.All 35 evaluated patients had typical lesions for early-stage invasive aspergillosis. Wedge-shaped infiltrates were noted in 48.6% of patients. In this group, 40% of patients had coexisting atypical radiological findings. In 11.4% of patients, wedge-shape consolidations were noted as the only type of lesions.Employment of the latest EORTC/MSG criteria increased diagnostic value of the baseline high resolution computed tomography in our study group by 11.4%.
Neural cell adhesion molecule L1CAM (L1) is involved in neuroprotection. To investigate a possible neuroprotective effect of L1 during ischemia, we determined whether blocking L1 with an antagonistic antibody would worsen the outcome of focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion and increase blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption.
Transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was performed in anesthetized rats. Five µg of antagonistic mouse IgG monoclonal L1 antibody 324 or non-immune control mouse IgG was applied on the ischemic-reperfused cortex during one hour of MCAO and two hours of reperfusion. At two hours of reperfusion, BBB permeability, size of infarct using tetrazolium staining, number of TUNEL-labeled apoptotic cells, and immunohistochemistry for expression of PTEN and p53 were studied.
The antagonistic L1 antibody 324 increased the percentage of cortical infarct area (+36%), but did not affect BBB permeability in the ischemic-reperfused cortex. The antagonistic L1 antibody increased number of apoptotic neurons and p53 expression, but decreased PTEN expression.
