Kefir grains are a microbial consortium of different genera of bacteria and yeasts. In this study, the performance of Tunisian Kefir grains during the biological treatment of a mixture of Gouda cheese whey and white wastewaters (GCW) in ratio 11 with very high organic matter concentration is investigated. The biological process was evaluated and optimized through the response surface methodology. Under the optimum conditions, Kefir grains concentration of 1.02%, temperature at 36.68 °C, and incubation time of 5.14 days, the removal efficiencies of COD, PO43-, and NO3- were 87, 37.48, and 39.5%, respectively. Interestingly, the reusability tests of the grains proved not only their high resistance to harsh environmental conditions but also their great potential for more practical applications. Particularly, different strains were isolated from the grains and identified as Kluyveromyces marxianus, Lactoccocus lactis, Lactobacillus kefiri, and Bacillus spp. using 16S rDNA sequence analysis and rep-PCR fingerprinting. At the biological level, the raw GCW (RGCW) has a negative impact on the Hordeum vulgare both on seed germination, and on the growth parameters of seedlings. Interestingly, after Kefir grains treatment, the treated GCW (TGCW) allow a seedlings growth and germination rate similar to those soaked in water.Malachite green (MG) is a triphenylmethane dye that is widely used in aquaculture as a fungicide, bactericide, ectoparasiticide, and antiprotozoal. There is great debate regarding the potential for this compound to trigger adverse effects. Here, we review the previous findings and then evaluate the lethal and sublethal effects of MG in the species Hemichromis bimaculatus (jewelfish). The lethal concentration for 50% of the fish in 96 h was 1 mg/L. BMS-777607 cost We observed a dose-dependent increase in the percentage of fish mortality as well as physical and behavioral changes. We further found that the highest tested sublethal dose significantly increased the DNA damage index identified using the comet assay (74.97 ± 13.8 at a significant level of P less then 0.05 for the 0.75 mg/L concentration), but did not significantly alter the results of the micronucleus test. Although our results suggest that MG confers risks on exposed fish, the findings were significant only at the highest exposure concentration (0.75 mg/L). At lower concentrations (0.25 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L), no adverse effect was observed. The maximum MG concentration recommended for use in ornamental fish farming is 0.2 mg/L. Therefore, our results suggest that, specifically for the parameters analyzed in this work, MG does not have any adverse effect when users strictly adhere to the recommended concentration criteria for ornamental fish.Whether or not China can succeed at the forefront of international development in the coming decades will largely hinge on its ability to adapt to low-carbon economic development and its efforts to promote the Unified National Emission Trading System (UNETS). To understand the evolution of China's carbon market, this paper firstly divides the development of China's regional carbon markets into three phases pilot construction (phase 1, before 31 May 2015), preparation for the UNETS (phase 2, 1 June 2015-19 December 2017), and formal construction of the UNETS (phase 3, 20 December 2017-present). Then this research reviews the trading performance and employs four robust variance ratio (VR) tests to capture structural changes and examine the efficiency of China's eight regional carbon markets in different periods. Results show that compared to phase 1, smaller price volatility, larger daily trading volume, and higher market liquidity are more frequent at the later stages of majority markets. Despite these improvements, results from the VR tests indicate that the statistic in majority of China's regional carbon markets is insignificant in any given period and, therefore, they are not weak-form efficient. The additional detrended cross-correlation analysis demonstrates that market liquidity affects market efficiency in the Hubei market only, which implies that Hubei, where the market liquidity reaches almost 100% in phase 3, is highly likely to be weak-form efficient shortly. Finally, several recommendations are provided to improve the efficiency and maturity of China's carbon markets, including strengthening legislation, improving the market design, and constructing information platforms.Objective Delivering feedback is an integral part of graduate medical education. This paper will present how feedback research informed the development of a new feedback model and discuss its implementation and evaluation by residents in an outpatient psychiatry clinic. Method After reviewing research, a new feedback model of self-determined goal setting with guided objectives and quarterly formal in-person feedback sessions was implemented with 10 psychiatry residents during their 12-month outpatient experience in postgraduate year (PGY)-3. Residents received a pre-intervention survey to assess existing opinions of feedback and goal setting and a post-intervention survey to evaluate experiences with the new feedback model. Results On the pre-intervention survey, 3 of 8 resident respondents indicated they had previously set goals, and only 4 of 8 predicted goal setting would be helpful, with average helpfulness rating of 3.62 (scale of 1 to 5). Cumulatively, 10 PGY-3 residents set 31 goals over the academic year. On the post-intervention survey, resident respondents rated the helpfulness of goal setting at 4.71 and quarterly, formal, in-person feedback meetings at 4.86. Success at reaching their self-determined goals was rated at 5 by all respondents. Conclusions Utilizing self-determined goals and formal in-person feedback sessions seemed to provide the framework for an effective feedback model in an outpatient resident clinic. This pilot project suggests that introducing formal feedback models can have a positive impact on resident clinical and educational growth. The data support expanding the model to assess its generalizability with the goal of furthering development of evidence-based feedback models.
