In crystals, PAP9 occurred as a dimeric enzyme that displayed a similar fold to that of the FeSODs or manganese SOD (MnSODs). A zinc ion, instead of the expected iron, was found to be penta-coordinated with a trigonal-bipyramidal geometry in the catalytic center of the recombinant protein. The metal coordination involves a water molecule and highly conserved residues in FeSODs. Solution-state NMR and DOSY experiments revealed an unfolded C-terminal 34 amino-acid stretch in the stand-alone protein and few internal residues interacting with the rest of the protein. We hypothesize that this C-terminal extension had appeared during evolution as a distinct feature of the FSD2/PAP9 targeting it to the PEP complex. Close vicinity to the transcriptional apparatus may allow for the protection against the strongly oxidizing aerial environment during plant conquering of terrestrial habitats.Drought stress affects a range of plant processes. It is still not well-known how C3 and C4 plants respond to drought. Here, we used a combination of meta-analysis and network analysis to compare the transcriptional responses of Oryza sativa (rice), a C3 plant, and Zea mays (maize), a C4 plant, to drought stress. The findings showed that drought stress changes the expression of genes and affects different mechanisms in the C3 and C4 plants. We identified several genes that were differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under stress conditions in both species, most of which are associated with photosynthesis, molecule metabolic process, and response to stress. Additionally, we observed that many DEGs physically located within the quantitative trait locus regions are associated with C isotope signature (d13C), photosynthetic gas exchange, and root characteristics traits. Through the gene co-expression and differential co-expression network methods, we identified sets of genes with similar and different behaviors among C3 and C4 plants during drought stress. This result indicates that mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway plays an important part in the differences between the C3 and C4 species. The present study provides a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the response of C3 and C4 plants to drought stress, which may useful for engineering drought tolerance in plants.Aroma is one of the essential parameters that determine fruit quality. It is also an important feature of varietal characterization and so valuable for agro-biodiversity identification and preservation. In order to characterize changes in the aroma fingerprint through fig development, the main objective of the present research was to study the volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles of figs (Ficus carica L.) from three cultivars, Taamriwthe (TH), Azegzaw (AZ), and Averkane (AV), at three ripening stages (unripe, ripe, and fully ripe). Analyses was performed using Headspace Solid-phase Microextraction and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Results revealed the presence of 29 compounds that were grouped into different chemical classes. Aldehydes comprised the most abundant VOCs identified in all the studied figs, while alcohols, ketones, and terpenes comprised the minor compounds found in TH, AZ, and AV figs, respectively. Different aroma descriptors were identified throughout the ripening stages of figs; fruity and green aromas were dominant in all cultivars, while a fatty aroma scarcely occurred in figs. A gallery plot representation demonstrated that certain VOCs differentiate the studied cultivars and the different ripening stages of figs. Principal component analysis findings demonstrated characteristic VOCs of distinct ripening stages and cultivars, those VOCs can be used as fingerprints to distinguish different cultivars and/or ripening stages.Mixed stands can be more productive if growth facilitation via niche segregation occurs. Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen, a tropical tree species endemic to Hainan Island with great economic values, belongs to the family Leguminosae. However, selecting mixed species with suitable ecological niches to efficiently construct mixed forests of D. odorifera in the context of abiotic stress [drought, nitrogen (N) deposition] remained obscure. In the present study, the target plant D. odorifera was planted with the same species D. odorifera, heterogeneous but the same family Delonix regia and non-Leguminous Family Swietenia mahagoni in the root interaction and isolated models under two watering regimes [100% and 30% field capacity (FC)] and two N applications (application, non-application), respectively. Principle component analysis based on the performances of growth, phenotype, and physiology was performed to identify the main factors affected by the treatments and the most discriminatory effects of water, N level, andlevel and N application could alter responses of D. odorifera to different niche neighbors under the root system interaction. Appropriate N application could alleviate the inhibitory effect of drought stress on D. odorifera in its mixed forests. A mixture with S. mahagoni under appropriate N application could be the optimal planting model. In the current context of global change, the increasing frequency and the length of drought periods are testing the resistance capacities of plants of dry habitats. However, although the adaptation of plants to drought has been widely studied, the anatomical features of wood influencing the functional responses of plants to drought are still lacking at the intraspecific level, especially for species with a wide geographical distribution. As a result, we have studied the variation of wood anatomical traits related to sap conduction (i.e., vessel surface area, vessel density, and number of vessels joined by radial file) in two wild olive subspecies distributed in Morocco (i.e., Olea europaea subsp. GSK-3 inhibitor europaea. var. sylvestris and Olea europaea subsp. maroccana), in relation to various drought conditions. This functional study, based on wood trait measurements of 351 samples from 130 trees and 13 populations, explores potential sap conduction in relation to environmental parameters and as a result, strategies to resist water stress.
