Seizures in infancy have highly variable courses and underlying etiologies. However, there are only a few long-term follow-up studies regarding infantile-onset epilepsy. Therefore, we aimed to describe the clinical courses, seizure outcomes, and risk factors of infantile-onset epilepsy followed up for more than 10 years in a tertiary center.
Data of the patients with epilepsy, diagnosed under the age of 12 months and followed up for more than 10 years, were retrieved from the electronic medical records of Asan Medical Center Children's Hospital. this website The patients' medical records were retrospectively reviewed, and clinical outcomes were assessed based on the duration of seizure freedom at the last follow-up.
Of the 146 patients, 103 (70.5%) entered at least one remission, of whom epilepsy was resolved in 46 (31.5%). Forty-nine (33.6%) were found to be intractable at last contact. Delayed development, neurological deficits, and later onset (>3 months) were significantly associated with intractable epilepsies (
< 0.01).
This study demonstrated that many patients with infantile-onset epilepsy can experience seizure remission. However, in some cases, early onset epilepsy was highly associated with various comorbidities and intractable seizures. Therefore, appropriate diagnosis and treatment are necessary to prevent further neuropsychiatric complications.

Through a series of physicochemical parameters and determination of hemostatic properties in vitro and in vivo, the results indicated that BACG and BACG-Bs were effective in inducing platelet adhesion/aggregation and promoting the hemostatic potential due to their biomimetic structure and rough surface. In addition, BACG-6B with high berberine proportion presented better hemostatic performance compared with the commercial hemostatic agent compound microporous polysaccharide hemostatic powder (CMPHP). BACG-6B also showed strong antibacterial activity in the in vitro test. The hemolysis test and cytotoxicity evaluation further revealed that the novel composite biomaterials have good hemocompatibility and biocompatibility. Thus, BACG-6B provides a new strategy for developing a due-functional (hemostat/antibacterial) biomedical material, which may have broad and promising applications in the future.
Major depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized neuropsychologically by poor performance in tasks of memory, attention, processing speed, and executive function. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the evidence regarding the neuropsychological profile of people with major depression and to determine which of two explanatory models-the processing speed hypothesis or the cognitive effort hypothesis-has most empirical support.
We searched three relevant databases and reviewed the reference lists of the articles retrieved. The results obtained with the Trail Making Test and the Stroop Color-Word Test were reviewed for 37 studies published between 1993 and 2020.
The empirical evidence supports both hypotheses cognitive effort and processing speed, suggesting that depression is not only characterized by psychomotor slowing but also involves a specific deficit in executive function.
We discuss potentially relevant variables that should be considered in future research in order to improve knowledge about the neurocognitive profile of depression. The main limitation of this study derives from the considerable heterogeneity of participants with MD, which makes it difficult to compare and integrate the data.

Prospective applications such as structural elements of micro-electro-mechanical systems MEMS can be envisaged since smaller principal dimensions reduce the susceptibility of components to residual stress accumulation during carbonization and to brittle fracture in general. We report the results of in situ in-SEM study of microdeformation and fracture behavior of CECs based on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) elastomeric matrices filled with carbon and silicon carbide. Nanostructured carbon composite materials were manufactured via compounding of elastomeric substance with carbon and SiC fillers using mixing rolling mill, vulcanization, and low-temperature carbonization. Double-edge notcheds of fractography images suggests that crack initiation, growth and propagation may occur both at the notch stress concentrator or relatively far from the notch. Possible causes of such response are discussed, namely, (1) residual stresses introduced by processing; (2) shape and size of fillers; and (3) the emanation and accumulation of gases in composites during carbonization.Optical fiber gratings have long shown their sensing capabilities. One of the main challenges, however, is the interrogation method applied, since typical systems tend to use broadband light sources with optical spectrum analyzers, laser scanning units or CCD (Charged Coupled Device) spectrometers. The following paper presents the development of an interrogation system, which explores the temperature response of a multimode laser diode, in order to interrogate long period fiber gratings. By performing a spectral sweep along one of its rejection bands, a discrete attenuation spectrum is created. Through a curve fitting technique, the original spectrum is restored. The built unit, while presenting a substantially reduced cost compared with typical interrogation systems, is capable of interrogating along a 10 nm window with measurement errors reaching minimum values as low as 0.4 nm, regarding the grating central wavelength, and 0.4 dB for its attenuation. Given its low cost and reduced dimensions, the developed system shows potential for slow-changing field applications.
