Objective This article aims to assess whether individual differences in reward sensitivity can be used to predict which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will benefit most from behavioral interventions that include reinforcement. Methods A 12-week behavioral intervention was offered to 21 children with ADHD and their parents. Reward sensitivity was assessed prior to the intervention using a combination of psychological and physiological measures. ADHD symptoms were assessed pre- and posttreatment using the Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD and Normal behavior (SWAN) rating scale. Results Lower scores on one of the questionnaire scales were associated with greater pre/posttreatment differences in ADHD symptoms. Conclusion We found that pre/posttreatment change was associated with one measure of parent-rated reward sensitivity. Children with low impulsive negative behavior toward gaining reward improved most during treatment. This result suggests that aspects of reward-related behaviors in ADHD may be useful to predict the effectiveness of treatment.The aim of this study was to develop and pilot a 52-week Microlearning curriculum on person-centered dementia care in nine nursing homes. The goal was to evaluate the usability and application of Microlearning as a tool to increase staff knowledge and improve perceptions of people with dementia, thus increasing their ability to deliver person-centered care and their job satisfaction. Findings indicate that participants enjoyed the flexible, 24/7 access to training and found that the immediacy of the format encouraged them to apply their learning directly to practice. Staff knowledge and attitudes toward people with dementia were positively impacted by the training, as was job satisfaction. Further research to test the efficacy of Microlearning compared to usual training is warranted, as are coordinated policy development efforts that can guide the implementation of best practices in the use of Microlearning as an innovative training modality in nursing homes.The aim of this study is to establish the perceptions of older adults in the South African context regarding falls and to link these perceptions to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Data were analyzed by a summative, conventional, and deductive approach. The analysis indicated that the Body Function and Structure codes were most frequently used during the discussions, but the contextual analysis of the most frequently used categories indicated that Activities and Participation were the participants' main focus. The main focus of fall assessment in older adults should therefore be on Activities and Participation, as this can assist them in decreasing their fall risk, irrespective of whether they had a previous fall. Little is known about mobile health technologies to support breastfeeding. Research aims This study proceeded in two phases. The aim of Phase 1 was to identify ideal technological components and content of a mobile health intervention. The aim of Phase 2 was to determine the usability of a prototype, KULEA-NET, based on the Phase 1 findings. Methods For this mixed-methods study, we used community-based participatory research methods and user-centered technology design methods. We used open coding in NVivo 11 to organize data from focus groups and in-depth interviews, then we analyzed the data. We then developed a prototype and tested the prototype's usability with the System Usability Scale. Fifty pregnant and postpartum African Americans from the District of Columbia participated. Results Participants preferred an app with text messaging technology and identified areas for intervention self-efficacy, parent-child attachment beliefs, social support, public breastfeeding and social desirability, and returning to work. Desired features included local resources, support person access, baby care logs, identification of public breastfeeding venues, and peer discussions. The System Usability Scale score was 73.8, which indicates above average usability. Conclusions A mobile health technology like KULEA-NET can be used to meet the breastfeeding needs of African Americans, build social desirability, and complement traditional health care. The appeal of an African American-specific intervention is unclear. Responding to mixed feeding practices is challenging. KULEA-NET is a mobile breastfeeding intervention guided by the preferences of African American parents and offers promising usability metrics.Spaceflight missions expose astronauts to increased risk of oxidative stress and inflammatory damage that might accelerate the development of asymptomatic cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether long-duration spaceflight (>4 months) results in structural and functional changes in the carotid and brachial arteries. selleck products Common carotid artery (CCA) intima-media thickness (cIMT), CCA distensibility and stiffness, and brachial artery endothelial-dependent and -independent vasodilation were measured in 13 astronauts (10 M, 3 F) approximately 180 and 60 days before launch, during the mission on approximately 15, 60, and 160 days of spaceflight, and within one week after landing. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were measured at corresponding times in fasting blood samples and urine samples from 24- or 48-hour pools. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation increased during spaceflight but most returned to preflight levels within 1 week of landing. Mean cIMT, CCA stiffness, and distensibility were not significantly different than preflight at any time. As a group, neither mean endothelium-dependent nor -independent vasodilation changed from pre- to postflight but changes within individual in endothelial function related to some biomarkers of oxidative stress. While biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation are elevated during spaceflight, CCA and brachial artery structure and function were not changed by spaceflight. It is unclear whether future exploration missions, with an extended duration in altered gravity fields and higher radiation exposure may be problematic.
