The 70-kDa heat shock proteins (HSP70) may provide relevant information about the endothelial dysfunction in cardiovascular diseases. Located in the intracellular milieu (iHSP70), they are essential chaperones that inhibit nuclear factor kappa B activation, stimulate nitric oxide production and superoxide dismutase activity, and inhibit apoptosis. However, under stressful conditions, HSP70 can be released into the extracellular medium (eHSP70) and act as an inflammatory mediator. Although studies have reported the vasoprotective role of iHSP70, the evidence regarding eHSP70 is contradictory. eHSP70 can activate NFκB and activator protein-1, thus stimulating the release of inflammatory cytokines and production of reactive oxygen species. Due to the antagonistic nature of HSP70 according to its location, the eHSP70/iHSP70 ratio (Heck index) has been proposed as a better marker of inflammatory status; however, more studies are required to confirm this hypothesis. Therefore, this review summarises studies that, together, describe the role of HSP70 in endothelial dysfunction.Background Cognitive impairment is a common symptom of patients with Major Depression (MDD) with negative clinical and social effects. With this study we investigated the question of whether MDD patients' effort to memorize items is reduced and whether this reduction is related to patients' memory impairment.Research design and methods Twenty-two patients with MDD and 28 healthy control participants took part in the study. Both groups did not differ with respect to age, gender, and basic education. MDD was confirmed by the Mini Diagnostic Interview for Mental Disorders (Mini-DIPS). Willingness to make an effort was assessed by the Amsterdam Short-Term Memory Test (ASTM). Logical Memory (LM) from the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS IV) was used to assess verbal memory.Results With respect to the willingness to make an effort, all MDD-patients performed above the cutoff and did not perform worse than healthy control participants. Depression appears to have a negative impact on recall and recognition of verbal information, but the effect on recall was larger.Conclusions These findings support studies indicating no motivational deficits in patients with depression during standardized neuropsychological testing. Methods All newborns with a gestational age of more than 35 weeks were screened for EOS risk factors in a Dutch regional teaching hospital, which uses a risk-based GBS screening strategy. For each included infant we calculated the EOS risk at birth and we stratified newborn infants into 3 levels of risk (low 1.54 per 1000 live newborns) with a corresponding recommendation on management. Thereafter, we recalculated the EOS risk and recommendation for those newborn infants in whose mothers the GBS culturing results were unavailable at time of birth. Results In one year, 1877 eligible births occurred and 206 infants were included. Maternal GBS status was available for 28/206 (14%) infants at birth. A definitive GBS status was later available for 162/206 (79%) newborn infants. Median EOS risk was slightly lower after definitive GBS status (0.41 vs 0.46 per 1000 live births, P=0.004). In 199/206 (97%) of newborn infants, the EOS calculator recommendation remained unchanged after the mostly unknown GBS results at birth were updated to the definitive GBS status later. Use of the GBS status, as known at time of birth, did not withhold antibiotic treatment in any newborn infant compared to use of the definitive GBS status. Conclusions The use of risk-based GBS screening is compatible with implementation of the EOS calculator. Larger studies are needed to address the best way of combining GBS screening with use of the EOS calculator.Objective This study aims to evaluate the effects of dietary supplement of rubber seed oil on production performance, egg quality, and yolk fatty acid composition in laying hens during a 16-week feeding trial period. Methods Forty-eight 25-week-old laying hens of Hy-Line Brown were randomly divided into three groups. Each group comprised four replicates and each replicate had four birds. Rubber seed oil was incorporated into a corn-soybean meal basal diet by 3.50% (group I), 4.50% (group II), or 0 (control group) and equivalent nutrition was supplied for the test groups and the control group. The performance related values were determined using standard or well established methods. Results No significant difference was found in the production performance, the egg quality, the composition of saturated fatty acids (SFA), and the content of cholesterol and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in the yolk within the three groups. Interestingly, both test groups achieved a significantly higher content of linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and a significantly lower content of arachidonic acid (AA) (P less then 0.05) compared with the control group. With the increased level of dietary rubber seed oil, there was an increasing trend in the content of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-3 PUFA and total PUFA, but a declining trend in the n-6/n-3 ratio. Conclusion These results demonstrate that the rubber seed oil supplemented diet effectively improved the total PUFA content in eggs without impairing the layers' production performance and the egg quality.
