The basis of this alteration seems to be a transcriptional dysregulation of genes involved in the excitatory and inhibitory balance and immediate-early genes within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of both generations. The expression of genes encoding enzymes that regulate H3K27me3 levels was altered in the mPFC and partially in sperm of F1 malnourished mice. Research on health effects of shift work has especially focused on somatic diseases, such as breast cancer and cardiometabolic disease, while less attention has been given to the association between shift work and mental health.
We used information on 19964 female nurses (≥44 years) from the Danish Nurse Cohort, who reported current work schedule (day, evening, night, or rotating) at recruitment (1993/1999). In 5102 nurses who participated in both cohort waves, we defined persistent night shift work as working night shift in 1993 and 1999. We used Cox regression models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for relevant confounders. Through linkage of cohort participants to national registers, we defined incidence of mood and neurotic disorders as first hospital contact or redeemed prescription until November 2018.
We found association between night shift work with mood disorders (HR=1.31; 95%CI=1.17-1.47) and neurotic disorders (1.29; 1.17-1.42), compared to day work. Associations were enhanced in nurses with persistent night shift work (1.85; 1.43-2.39 and 1.62; 1.26-2.09 for mood and neurotic disorders, respectively) and in nurses with specialist confirmed mood (1.69; 1.24-2.29) and neurotic (1.72; 1.22-2.44) disorders. Nurses with preexisting psychiatric disorders and full-time work seemed most susceptible.

However, observational studies have produced conflicting results and little is known about the importance of timing of infection in mediating subsequent risk. In this study, we carried out a meta-analysis of observational studies to investigate the risk of maternal infection and subsequent risk of non-affective psychosis. Using seven cohort studies, we found that maternal infection during gestation increased the risk of non-affective psychosis [relative risk (RR) 1.28 (95% CI1.05-1.57, p = 0.02, I2 = 36%)]. A subgroup analysis identified that there was greater risk for schizophrenia alone [RR 1.65 (95% CI1.23-2.22, p = 0.0008, I2 = 0%)]. In addition, infection during the second trimester resulted in increased risk [RR 1.63 (95% CI1.07-2.48, p = 0.02, I2 = 7%)], whilst risk during the first and third trimesters did not meet statistical significance. This study highlights maternal infection in gestation as an important environmental risk factor for non-affective psychosis and our findings carry important implications for future disease prevention strategies.Psychotic experiences are prevalent in the general population and are associated with negative outcomes, including depressive symptoms. The mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear, but new insights could be obtained by exploring the role of transdiagnostic processes such as experiential avoidance, defined as a person's attempts or desires to suppress unwanted internal experiences like thoughts, emotions, memories, or bodily sensations. Studies analyzing the link between negative emotional states and psychotic experiences are scant. We explored the association between a specific kind of psychotic experience (paranoid ideation), experiential avoidance, and depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms in a sample from the general population. We found that experiential avoidance partially mediates the associations between paranoid ideation and stress and anxiety symptoms and that it fully mediates the association between paranoid ideation and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that the presence of paranoid ideation and the usage of experiential avoidance to cope with it are vulnerability factors associated with psychological distress.As an epigenetic regulator micro-RNAs (miRNAs) have gained increasing attention in biomarker research for diseases. Many studies point towards an involvement of miRNAs in neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, schizophrenia or depression. In a recent study we identified a possible relationship between childhood traumatization and miRNAs associated with Alzheimer's Disease in the general population as well as in a small psychiatric clinical sample. In this study we aimed to confirm this biological link in an independent psychiatric clinical sample (N = 104) and to also explore the impact of different childhood trauma dimensions (sum score, abuse dimension and neglect dimension). Analyses revealed their different impact on disease in the combined sample (N = 154; N = 50 from the recent study). We could confirm associations for all of the four recently identified miRNAs in the replication sample (N = 104) on a suggested significance level of p less then 0.08 (two with p less then 0.05). In the combined sample (N = 154) fifteen miRNAs were significantly associated with the childhood trauma sum score after correction for multiple testing. Most of them showed recently significant associations for Alzheimer's Disease. learn more For the subscores of abuse and neglect only one miRNA was identified in addition, associated with childhood neglect. Bioinformatics analysis identified significant brain-related pathways regulated by the respective miRNAs. At the time of publication our study is the largest study of the association between childhood trauma and miRNAs in a clinical psychiatric sample. The confirmation of our previous results supports the relevance of the association between childhood traumatization and Alzheimer's Disease through miRNA regulation of brain-related pathways.
