We report the control of the interplane magnetic exchange coupling in CaIrO3 perovskite thin films and superlattices with SrTiO3. By analyzing the anisotropic magneto-transport data, we demonstrate that a semimetallic paramagnetic CaIrO3 turns into a canted antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at reduced dimensions. The emergence of a biaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy indicates the canted moment responding to the cubic symmetry. Extending to superlattices and probing oxygen octahedral rotation by half-integer X-ray Braggs diffraction, a more complete picture about the canted moment evolution with interplane coupling can be understood. Remarkably, a rotation of the canted moments' easy axes by 45° is also observed by a sign reversal of the in-plane strain. These results demonstrate the robustness of anisotropic magnetoresistance in revealing quasi two-dimensional canted antiferromagnets, as well as valuable insights about quadrupolar magnetoelastic coupling, relevant for designing future antiferromagnetic spintronic devices. We report how the direction of quantum dot (QD) lasing can be engineered by exploiting high-symmetry points in plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) lattices. The nanolaser architecture consists of CdSe-CdS core-shell QD layers conformally coated on two-dimensional square arrays of Ag NPs. Using waveguide-surface lattice resonances (W-SLRs) near the Δ point in the Brillouin zone as optical feedback, we achieved lasing from the gain in CdS shells at off-normal emission angles. Changing the periodicity of the plasmonic lattices enables other high-symmetry points (Γ or M) of the lattice to overlap with the QD shell emission, which facilitates tuning of the lasing direction. We also increased the thickness of the QD layer to introduce higher-order W-SLR modes with additional avoided crossings in the band structure, which expands the selection of cavity modes for any desired lasing emission angle.Herein, we synthesized a Fe, Ni dual-metal embedded in porous nitrogen-doped carbon material to endow higher turnover frequency (TOF), lower H2O2 yield, and thus superior durability than for the single-atom catalyst for oxygen reduction in acid media. Quantitative X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) fitting and density functional theory (DFT) calculation were implemented to explore the active sites in the catalysts. The results suggest FeNi-N6 with type I (each metal atom coordinated with four nitrogen atoms) instead of type II configuration (each metal atom coordinated with three nitrogen atoms) dominates the catalytic activity of the noble-metal free catalyst (NMFC). Further, theoretical calculation reveals that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity trend of different moieties was FeNi-N6 (type I) > FeNi-N6 (type II) > Fe-N4 > Fe2-N6. Our research represents an important step for developing dual-metal doping NMFC for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by revealing its new structural configuration and correlation with catalytic activity.During the evolution of life on earth, the emergence of lipid membrane-bounded compartments is one of the most enigmatic events. Endosymbiosis has been hypothesized as one of the solutions. In this work, using a coacervate droplet formed by single-stranded oligonucleotides (ss-oligo) and poly(l-lysine) (PLL) as the protocell model, we monitored the uptake of liposomes of different types and studied the dynamic behavior of the resulting composite droplet under the electric field. The coacervate droplet exhibits affinity for the liposomes of varying charges. However, the permeation of liposome is also controlled by electrostatic interactions. Dominated by electrostatic attraction, the positively charged liposome is retained inside the droplet as growing fibrous structures, while the negatively charged liposome is mainly coated on the droplet surface. Permeation and even distribution occur when the liposome and the droplet carry the same charges, or at least one of them is neutral. As an electric field is applied to trigger repetitive cycles of vacuolization in the ss-oligo/PLL droplet, the fibrous structure formed by the positively charged liposome is basically intact, while a new phase is generated together with uneven mass transport as the negatively charged liposome is internalized. Interestingly, the release of daughter droplets with similar components occurs on the droplet containing neutral liposomes. Our work not only provides a step toward creating protocells with hierarchical structures and biofunctions using a biogenetic material via simple mixing but also sheds light on the possible origin of the lipid structure inside a living organism. The commercially available fluoroiodomethane represents a valuable and effective electrophilic source for transferring the CH2F unit to a series of heteroatom-centered nucleophiles under mild basic conditions. The excellent manipulability offered by its liquid physical state (bp 53.4 °C) enables practical and straightforward one-step nucleophilic substitutions to retain the chiral information embodied, thus allowing it to overcome de facto the requirement for fluoromethylating agents with no immediate access. The high-yielding methodology was successfully applied to a variety of nucleophiles including a series of drugs currently in the market.A new method for generating fitting grids for least-squares tensor hypercontraction (LS-THC) is presented. This method draws inspiration from the related interpolative separable density fitting (ISDF) technique but uses only a pivoted Cholesky decomposition of the metric matrix, S, already computed as a matter of course in LS-THC. The size and quality of the resulting grid are controlled by a user-defined cutoff parameter and the size of the starting grid. Additionally, the Cholesky-based method provides an alternative and possible more numerically stable method for performing the least-squares fit. The quality of the grids produced is evaluated for LS-DF-THC-MP2 calculations on retinal and benzene, the former with a large starting grid and small cc-pVDZ basis set, and the latter with a wide range of grids and basis sets. A-196 supplier The error and grid size are found to be well-controlled by either the cutoff parameter (with a large starting grid) or the starting grid size (with a tight cutoff) and highly predictable. The Cholesky-based method is also able to generate unique grids tailored to different charge distributions, for example the (ab|, (ai|, and (ij| distributions that arise in the molecular orbital integrals.
