We propose a novel method that predicts facial nerve function (FNF) calculated from the drop and recovery of facial motor evoked potential (FMEP) amplitude ratio during the surgery of cerebellopontine angle tumors.
We enrolled 73 patients with cerebellopontine angle tumor, and used a biphasic, constant current, and suprathreshold stimulation (BCS) protocol to record FMEP of the orbicularis oris. We measured the intraoperative minimum-to-baseline amplitude ratio (MBR), the final-to-baseline amplitude ratio (FBR), and the recovery value (RV). RV was measured by subtracting MBR from FBR. Using those values, we evaluated FNF both at early postoperative (EP) and late postoperative (LP) periods.
We successfully obtained 62 FMEP readings. Facial palsies occurred in 22 patients during the EP period, and 14 patients recovered during the LP period. Both MBR and FBR showed a significant correlation with FNF in the EP period. RV showed a good predictive power of FNF recovery during the LP period for the first time.
RV is a new and useful predictor of FNF recovery. MBR can be an intraoperative predictor of FNF in the EP period.

Unilateral manifestation of motor dysfunction is a prominent hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated how the motor laterality of the disorder affects sleep neural asymmetry before and after Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
Twenty-seven PD patients of the akinetic-rigid subtype were studied; 11 with right dominant (RD) and 16 with left dominant (LD) motor symptoms. Neuronal sleep asymmetry was computed as the difference of sleep slow-wave energy (SWE) between left and right hemispheres. We used linear mixed models to assess the relationship between symptomatic profile and SWE asymmetry.
LD PD patients exhibited frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) asymmetry and motor laterality pre-DBS with increased SWE contralateral to their affected body side, which diminished post-DBS. The RD group did not exhibit neither neural asymmetry nor motor laterality pre- and post-DBS. There was a significant negative correlation between the motor laterality and sleep EEG asymmetry.
Our results suggest evidence for a local use-dependent modulation of SWE as a result of the lateralized pathological motor profile. More bilateral motor symptoms and optimized treatment contribute to diminished sleep EEG asymmetry.

To explore the effects of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF rTMS) on cortico-striatal-cerebellar resting state functional connectivity in Parkinson's disease (PD), with and without dyskinesias.
Because there is increasing evidence of an involvement of the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) in the pathophysiology of levodopa induced dyskinesias, we targeted the right pre-SMA with LF rTMS in 17 PD patients. We explored the effects of one sham-controlled LF rTMS session on resting state functional connectivity of interconnected brain regions by using functional MRI, and how it is modified by levodopa. The clinical effect on motor function and dyskinesias was documented.
As expected, one LF rTMS session did not alleviate dyskinesias. However, real, and not sham LF rTMS significantly increased the functional connectivity with the right putamen in patients with dyskinesias. In patients without dyskinesias, the real LF rTMS session significantly decreased functional connectivity in the right putamen and the cerebellum. We found no effects on functional connectivity after levodopa ingestion.

To estimate the prevalence of changes in the frequency of self-reported heavy episodic drinking (HED) among drinkers in Latin America and Caribbean countries on alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to assess self-reported factors associated with the increased frequency of HED.
Data from 12,328 adults who responded to the cross-sectional survey conducted in 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean by Pan American Health Organization were used. Logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the effect of the sociodemographic characteristics, quarantine practices, and anxiety symptoms on the increase in frequency of HED among the 2019 drinkers.
