Arab Oil Embargo
- OAPEC placed an oil embargo on the United States in 1973. This has caused multiple oil-based products to become extremely expensive. It directly affected gasoline produces and transportation or manufacturing costs had increased.
Baby Boom
- This was when the largest generation was born following the war in 1946 and 1964. This generation consisted of stay-at-home wives who raised children. Some wives still choose to work.
Blacklist
- This list was made up of people who used the Fifth Amendment as protection when they testified against the HUAC. The list was filled with people who were suspected to be communist and also had lost their jobs or couldn't find jobs based on this list.
Camp David Treaty
- This was when Carter had talks with the Soviet Union and Israel. He had meetings at Camp David and allowed for the signings of the Camp David accccords that improved foreign relations and reflected his need for peace. The treaty between Egypt and Israel followed this.
Carter Doctrine
- This was Carter saying he would consider any influence or meddling in the Middle East hostile and retaliate. He made this doctrine to prevent the Soviet Union from expanding down Asia.
Desegregation
- This was when schools and other public areas could not be separated based on race. This was first followed through by Brown v Board of Education and Plessy v Ferguson being overturned. However, this was not efficiently implemented because schools determined how they wanted to desegregate.
Detente
- This was Nixon's strategy to ease political and military tension between the US and the Soviet Union. This limited the armaments between both nations and limited the nuclear missiles each place had. They also agreed on the exchange of science and cooperation in space.
Iran Hostage Crisis
- Iranian Revolutionaries had taken the embassy hostage. They released women and African Americans and held the hostages for a year. This hurt Carter's presidency as he was unable to do anything and rescue attempts had failed.
Kent State Shootings
- This occurred when the National Guard that was in Kent State had faced realiation from students who protested the Vietnam invasion. The students were shot at by the officers and were killed which led to an increase in antiwar sentiment and military protests.
Sputnik
- The first manmade satellite launched by the Soviet Union. This caused the United States to pass the National Defense Education Act that focused funding to education programs in science and engineering.
