Acute cardiotoxicity was induced by a single dose of CP (10 mg/kg, i.p.) on the 10th day of the experiment. RSV (10 mg/ kg/day) and SMV (10 mg/kg/day) were orally administered for 15 days. CP-treated rats showed significant alterations in electrocardiographic recordings and elevation in serum cardiac function biomarkers; troponin T content, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase-MB levels as well as boost in the cardiac oxidative stress biomarkers. In addition, CP exposure resulted in GRP78 induction; an ER stress and elevation marker at calpain-1 content as well as activation of activated caspase-3 (ACASP3) and caspase-12 were reflected on CP-triggered apoptosis evidenced by elevation in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. However, RSV and SMV administration mitigate those adverse CP effects. Statins administration prominently alleviated CP-induced cardiac abnormalities exerting improvement in the ECG pattern and cardiac enzyme biomarkers. Interestingly, statins; RSV and SMV, disrupted CP-induced ER stress and the consequent apoptotic cell death evidenced by downregulation of ER-chaperone GRP78, calpain-1, ACASP3 and caspase-12 as well as decline in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. From all the previous findings, it can be suggested that statins namely; RSV and SMV, play protective role against CP-induced cardiac injury by regulating ER stress-mediated apoptotic pathways.The six Gulf monarchies are major stakeholders in the global energy system. Collectively, they account for one-quarter of global oil production, comprise the biggest source of oil exports, and are responsible for one-third of internationally traded gas. However, the ongoing transformation of this energy system towards a low-carbon one will have profound consequences for them in terms of geopolitical considerations and domestic rentier arrangements. This article focuses on the latter, which has received far less attention. Falling between the nexus of the 'rentier state' and the political economy of low-carbon energy, the article seeks to determine the extent to which the increasing deployment of low-carbon energy in the Gulf may mitigate against the effects of the hydrocarbon-fuelled 'resource curse'. These are associated with revenue volatility, jobs, and the private sector. The argument advanced here is that low-carbon energy will likely reinforce pre-existing rentier states and their development challenges. In this connection, the increasing uptake of low-carbon energy contributes to the survival of resource-rich Gulf monarchies.
Retinal changes are poorly described in early treated phenylketonuria (ETPKU). We aimed to investigate possible visual functional and ocular microstructural changes in adult patients with ETPKU. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its angiography (OCTA) data from patients with PKU were compared to healthy controls.

In this prospective, monocentric, cross-sectional, case-control study 50 patients with ETPKU and 50 healthy subjects were evaluated with OCT and OCTA. Measurements were performed on right eyes. The following visual function parameters were studied best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), contrast sensitivity and near stereoacuity; microstructural parameters retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), ganglion cell layer (GCC)

The objective of the present study was to further examine potential differences in cerebellar morphometry between individuals with and without ETPKU. To this end, we analyzed high resolution T1-weighted MR images from a sample of 20 individuals with ETPKU and an age-matched comparison group of 20 healthy individuals without PKU. Measurements of whole brain volume, whole cerebellum volume, cerebellar gray matter volume, and cerebellar white matter volume were collected by means of semiautomatic volumetric analysis. Data analysis revealed no significant group differences in whole brain volume, whole cerebellar volume, or cerebellar white matter volume. A significant reduction in cerebellar gray matter volume, however, was observed for the ETPKU group compared to the non-PKU comparison group. These findings expand on previous animal work suggesting that cerebellar gray matter is impacted by PKU. It is also consistent with the hypothesis that the cognitive difficulties experienced by individuals with ETPKU may be related to disruptions in gray matter. Additional studies are needed to fully elucidate the timing and extent of the impact of ETPKU on cerebellum and the associated neurocognitive consequences.
