Ovarian cancer is a highly deadly malignancy in which recurrence is considered incurable. Resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy bodes a particularly abysmal prognosis, underscoring the need for novel therapeutic agents and strategies. The use of mithramycin, an antineoplastic antibiotic, has been previously limited by its narrow therapeutic window. Recent advances in semisynthetic methods have led to mithramycin analogs with improved pharmacological profiles. Mithramycin inhibits the activity of the transcription factor Sp1, which is closely linked with ovarian tumorigenesis and platinum-resistance. This article summarizes recent clinical developments related to mithramycin and postulates a role for the use of mithramycin, or its analog, in the treatment of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer.Among biological networks, co-expression networks have been widely studied. One of the most commonly used pipelines for the construction of co-expression networks is weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), which can identify highly co-expressed clusters of genes (modules). WGCNA identifies gene modules using hierarchical clustering. The major drawback of hierarchical clustering is that once two objects are clustered together, it cannot be reversed; thus, re-adjustment of the unbefitting decision is impossible. In this paper, we calculate the similarity matrix with the distance correlation for WGCNA to construct a gene co-expression network, and present a new approach called the k-module algorithm to improve the WGCNA clustering results. This method can assign all genes to the module with the highest mean connectivity with these genes. This algorithm re-adjusts the results of hierarchical clustering while retaining the advantages of the dynamic tree cut method. The validity of the algorithm is verified using six datasets from microarray and RNA-seq data. The k-module algorithm has fewer iterations, which leads to lower complexity. We verify that the gene modules obtained by the k-module algorithm have high enrichment scores and strong stability. Our method improves upon hierarchical clustering, and can be applied to general clustering algorithms based on the similarity matrix, not limited to gene co-expression network analysis. In order to survive in a hostile habitat, plants have to manage the available resources to reach a delicate balance between development and defense processes, setting up what plant scientists call a trade-off. Most of these processes are basically responses to stimuli sensed by plant cell receptors and are influenced by the environmental features, which can incredibly modify such responses and even cause changes upon both molecular and phenotypic level. Therefore, significant differences can be detected between plants of the same species living in different environments. The comprehension of plant growth-defense trade-offs from the molecular basis to the phenotypic expression is one of the fundamentals for developing sustainable agriculture, so with this review we intend to contribute to the increasing of knowledge on this topic, which have a great importance for future development of agricultural crop production.Coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) has gained increasing clinical attention as the most advanced form of coronary artery disease. Prior studies already indicated a clear association of CTO with adverse clinical outcomes, especially in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and concomitant CTO of the non-infarct-related coronary artery (non-IRA). Nevertheless, the prognostic impact of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of CTO in the acute setting during AMI is still controversial. Due to the complexity of the CTO lesion, CTO-PCI leads to an increased risk of complications compared to non-occlusive coronary lesions. Therefore, this review outlines the prognostic impact of CTO-PCI in patients with AMI. In addition, the prognostic impact of periprocedural myocardial infarction caused by CTO-PCI will be discussed. The septate uterus is the most common congenital uterine malformation and is treated by hysteroscopic metroplasty. There are few studies on the fundal uterine changes that occur after surgery. We designed a pilot prospective observational study to evaluate by three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound (3D-TVS) the changes not only of the internal fundal uterine profile, but also of the external one, after hysteroscopic metroplasty. Sixty women who underwent hysteroscopic metroplasty for partial or complete uterine septum (U2a and U2b subclasses of ESHRE/ESGE classification) were enrolled. We performed 3D-TVS after surgery confirming optimal removal of the septum. However, at ultrasound follow-up after three months, we observed a significant increase (p less then 0.001) in the residual septum (Zr) (3.7 mm (95% CI 3.1-4.4)), the myometrial wall thickness (Y) (2.5 mm (95% CI 2.0-3.0)) and the total fundal wall thickness (Y + Zr) (6.2 mm (95% CI 5.5-6.9)). Forty-three patients (72%) required a second step of hysteroscopic metroplasty. Moreover, the shape of uterine fundus changed in 58% of cases. PHA-793887 concentration We actually observed a remodeling of the uterine fundus with modifications of its external and internal profiles. Therefore, we propose to always perform a second ultrasound look at least three months after the metroplasty to identify cases that require a second- step metroplasty.Hollow fiber membrane contactors (HFMCs) provide a large specific surface area. Thus, their significantly reduced volume provides an advantage compared to the conventional gas-liquid contactor. In this study, the selective removal efficiency of flue gas, in which sulfur oxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) coexist, was measured using a polypropylene (PP) HFMC with such advantages. To increase the selective removal efficiency of SO2, experiments were conducted using various alkaline absorbents. As a result, with 0.05 M ammonia solution, the removal efficiency of 95% or more was exhibited with continuous operation for 100 h or more. We confirmed that the absorbent saturated by the once-through mode was aqueous ammonium sulfate ((NH₄)₂SO₄) solution and could be used as a fertilizer without additional processing.
