The Best Tog For All Year Round
Piglet in Bed's all-seasons option is designed to replicate the warmness of a duvet at a hotel. It keeps you cool in summer and warm in Winter. It's odour resistant and breathable too.
It's 10.5 tog which is suitable for use all year round, but could be too warm for winter's coldest days for some, particularly hot sleepers. If this is the case, go for a 'half and half' style duvet that comes with a light 4.5 tog to add on cold nights.
Winter
It's time to snuggle up with a cozy and warm duvet as winter approaches. A tog range of 13.5 and 15 will give you excellent insulation, allowing you to regulate your own body heat and keep you cozy all night.
A duvet's tog rating is based on how it is able to insulate and hold warmth, but it also depends on the type of material, the size of the filling as well as the method of making it. Natural fibres such as wool and down, for example, have a higher rating of tog than synthetic polyester. A duvet with lighter fillings and a more open weave is breathable. However, a heavier fabric or one with a tighter weave will be warmer and more insulating.
It's worth comparing the warmth of different duvets available in stores to find the right one for you. You may require an extra heavy duvet or a lighter one, based on the climate of your area, the level of the airflow in your bedroom, and how much heat is retained by your home.
If you want maximum flexibility, go for a duvet that is 3-in-1, which lets you change between three different ratings. It will come with a light 4.5 tog duvet for summer, a warm 13.5 tog for winter and a 9-tog option to accommodate those in-between periods. Our favorite is a silk-filled Gingerlily duvet. It's extremely soft and has clever keep-cool filling.
Tog ratings let you choose from a variety of options, regardless of your budget or preferences. If you select a duvet made of natural fibers like cotton or silk, a duvet with a high tog will be very affordable. If you're looking to invest more, you can find a luxurious duvet that has a beautiful finish for around a hundred pounds.
If you share a duvet with a partner or if you have children, you should invest in a multi-season design. The majority of duvets come with two layers that can be put together in winter to create a 13.5 tog layer, or kept apart in summer for an easier one. The Slumberdown Cosy Nights 15 Tog Duvet is a great option and is priced at PS40.
Spring/Autumn
You may not realise it, but your duvet plays an important role in how well you rest at night. It is important to use a duvet that has an extremely high tog so that you are warm in the bed. Duvets are available in a variety of tog ratings, ranging from 1 to 15. Duvets with lower tog ratings are better for summer and higher tog ones are more suitable for winter.
For the seasons of spring and autumn, a 10.5 tog duvet will provide the perfect balance of warmth and comfort. It is often referred to as a duvet that can be worn all year round since it offers enough cushioned and insulated warmth, but not too heavy and uncomfortable on warmer nights. Certain all-season duvets permit you to combine two duvets, using quick closings to create a more comfortable temperature for winter. This is a good option for couples who prefer to sleep in different temperatures. It also saves space since you don't need to store your duvets for each season.
Merino wool is a light option that offers temperature regulation. This fabric is becoming increasingly popular in bedding because it is breathable, wicks moisture and odour-proof. Piglet in bed has a duvet that is made of merino wool which has these advantages and is also hypoallergenic, so it will be kind to skin that is sensitive. Piglet in Bed estimates that it is between 8 and 10 tog which means it can be used throughout the year. You could even use it as a top layer underneath a light quilt in summer and throw over the duvet again in winter.
Summer
The UK weather can be unpredictable and a restful night's sleep is dependent on the right duvet for each season. Your duvet should be light enough for summer but warm and cozy for Winter. This is known as thermoregulation, and the ideal method to get this done is to choose a duvet that has different tog ratings that you can easily switch between throughout the all year.
A 10.5 tog is a suitable middle-range duvet to use for Summer It's warm enough for colder months, but it will keep you cool if you are prone to sweating during your sleep or suffer from warmer temperatures. There are many companies that offer duvets that are all-seasonal with two layers that can be tacked together in accordance with the temperature.
what togs do duvets come in is one that is a 4.5 tog duvet, which might seem too light for Winter but can keep you warm and comfortable if prone to overheating or if your bedroom tends to get warm in the evenings. There are duvets designed to be both comfortable and breathable, such as this merino wool option from Piglet in Bed which promises to keep you cosy without overheating.
Some duvets have cooling technologies like gel-infused foam memory or moisture-wicking fabric that are designed to draw sweat from the body. This is particularly beneficial when you are sleeping hot or you experience night sweats. It can help you avoid overheating and also get a good night's rest.
If you like the softness of feathers and are not allergic, an afghan duvet is the most luxurious option. If you are allergic or are worried about overheating, a synthetic duvet is a better choice. Synthetic duvets are usually cheaper than down and are made with a feather-like feeling and hypoallergenic qualities.
This Nectar half-and-half duvet is a perfect all-rounder. It is the summer/spring and a 10.5 tog fall/winter layer that can be pinned to each other with buttons. The duvet is breathable, and has a temperature-regulating. It also comes with an odour resistant cover.
Baby
As parents, you want your little one to be safe and secure at all times. But, dressing them for sleeping can be a challenge - especially if you're not sure what the temperature is or the amount of clothes they should put on to stay warm. Sleeping bags come with TOG ratings, which make it easier for you to decide on dressing your baby for sleep. TOG, which is a reference to Thermal Overall Grade, measures the warmth of an item of bedding or clothing and helps you choose the right clothing in accordance with the environment in which your child is.
A 1.0 TOG sleeping bag is suitable for most temperatures, all year round and is ideal if your home can maintain the temperature at a comfortable level. It is a good idea to cover your baby in bodysuits with long or short sleeves and footie pjs depending on the weather, and you can even add an extra layer of warmth by using an extremely soft swaddle blanket made of muslin.
For colder environments In colder climates, for colder environments, a 2.5 TOG sleep bag will provide additional warmth and insulation for your baby. This is a great option for those who want to keep a moderate temperature within your home. It will protect your baby while allowing him to retain the warmth of his own.
