Building, bridge or wind turbine maintenance requires manual dexterity tasks by a specialist rope-access trained workforce via two principal means harness suspension of individual workers from above, or deployment of a suspended platform or cradle from which workers access the structure to be maintained. Currently no published research compares accuracy and efficiency of simulated maintenance tasks between these modalities. This study investigated manual dexterity task performance of peg placement and shape delineation in seated, standing and suspended environments in 16 healthy controls and 26 professional rope-access trained individuals. Both seated and standing assessments were superior to those suspended, and height of suspension, total mass and years of experience had no influence on the task outcome. These findings suggest that, where feasible, cradle suspension mechanisms which permit standing maintenance are favourable in terms of task efficacy and where feasible, should be considered for deployment in wind energy and other engineering applications.Despite legislation, dowry is still widespread in many parts of India and adjacent countries. It refers to the transfer of goods, money, and property to a bridegroom, his parents, or his relatives from a bride's family as a condition of the marriage. One of the consequences of the dowry system has been the murder or abetted suicide of young wives, either because more dowry goods were not provided to her husband or his family, or to secure the goods after marriage. In 2015 7634 women died due to dowry harassment, representing approximately 21 cases per day in India. The majority of dowry deaths occur within the first three years of marriage. Common types of dowry death homicides involve fire ('bride burning', drowning, poisoning and hanging/strangulation. In addition to legislation, an organized and multipronged approach is need by investigating police officers, women's' welfare organizations, responsible public servants, and the judiciary with consistent applications of deterrent penalties. Full and properly conducted medicolegal investigation is mandatory which must include scene examinations, full autopsies with photographic documentation and ancillary investigations such as headspace analyses. Significant burns in young Indian women living in traditional circumstances should raise the possibility of dowry-related crime.Research on the molecular pathology of genome instability disorders has advanced our understanding of the complex mechanisms that safeguard genome stability and cellular homeostasis at large. Once the culprit genes and their protein products are identified, an ongoing dialogue develops between the research lab and the clinic in an effort to link specific disease symptoms to the functions of the proteins that are missing in the patients. Ataxi A-T elangiectasia (A-T) is a prominent example of this process. A-T's hallmarks are progressive cerebellar degeneration, immunodeficiency, chronic lung disease, cancer predisposition, endocrine abnormalities, segmental premature aging, chromosomal instability and radiation sensitivity. The disease is caused by absence of the powerful protein kinase, ATM, best known as the mobilizer of the broad signaling network induced by double-strand breaks (DSBs) in the DNA. In parallel, ATM also functions in the maintenance of the cellular redox balance, mitochondrial function and turnover and many other metabolic circuits. An ongoing discussion in the A-T field revolves around the question of which ATM function is the one whose absence is responsible for the most debilitating aspect of A-T - the cerebellar degeneration. This review suggests that it is the absence of a comprehensive role of ATM in responding to ongoing DNA damage induced mainly by endogenous agents. It is the ensuing deterioration and eventual loss of cerebellar Purkinje cells, which are very vulnerable to ATM absence due to a unique combination of physiological features, which kindles the cerebellar decay in A-T.Metalloproteins constitute nearly half of all proteins and catalyze some of the most complex chemical reactions. Recently, we reported a design of 4G-UFsc (Uno Ferro single chain), a single chain four-helical bundle with extraordinarily high (30 pM) affinity for zinc. We evaluated the contribution of different side chains to binding of Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) using systematic mutagenesis of the amino acids that constitute the primary metal coordination and outer spheres. The binding affinity of proteins for metals was then measured using isothermal titration calorimetry. M4205 c-Kit inhibitor Our results show that both primary metal coordination environment and side chains in the outer sphere of UFsc are highly sensitive to even slight changes and can be adapted to binding different 3d metals, including hard-to-tightly bind metal ions such as Mn(II). The studies on the origins of tight metal binding will guide future metalloprotein design efforts.
Longitudinal perinatal depression (PND) data is sparsely available in the Indian population. We have employed Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to assess the prevalence and identify characteristics associated with PND in the south Indian population. PND was assessed longitudinally using EPDS scores with traditional cut-off approach as well as a novel method of latent class mixture modeling (LCMM). The LCMM method, to the best of our knowledge, has been used for the first time in the Indian population.
Three hundred and forty seven women, predominantly from economically-weaker sections of rural and urban South India were longitudinally assessed for antenatal depression (AD) and postnatal depression (PD) using EPDS cutoff-scores ≥13 and ≥10, respectively. Uni/multivariable analyses were used to identify PND associated characteristics. LCMM was then implemented, followed by risk characteristics identification.
PND prevalence from traditional approach was 24.50 % (12.68 % AD; 18.16% PD). Charactern strategies for PND related conditions because of the limited access to mental health resources.
Both the traditional cut-off-based approach and LCMM provided very similar conclusions regarding the prevalence of PND and characteristics associated with it. Higher PND prevalence was observed in urban women compared to rural women. In low-income countries, identifying risk characteristics associated with PND is a critical component in designing prevention strategies for PND related conditions because of the limited access to mental health resources.
