Bites occurred in the owner's yard in 356 dogs (85%) and 53 cats (26%). A snake venom detection kit was used in 172 cases (28%) and antivenom was administered in 523 cases (85%). eFT508 Most animals (n = 534, 88%) survived to discharge (median hospitalisation of 25 [IQR 16, 62] hours). SnakeMap effectively collects relevant clinical data from dogs and cats with presumed snake bite and provides locally specific information on the epidemiology of snake envenomation in small animals.Flexible electronics have witnessed exciting progress in academia over the past decade, but most of the research outcomes have yet to be translated into products or gain much market share. For mass production and commercialization, industrial adoption of newly developed functional materials and fabrication techniques is a prerequisite. However, due to the disparate features of academic laboratories and industrial plants, translating materials and manufacturing technologies from labs to fabs is notoriously difficult. Therefore, herein, key challenges in the materials manufacturing of flexible electronics are identified and discussed for its lab-to-fab translation, along the four stages in product manufacturing design, materials supply, processing, and integration. Perspectives on industry-oriented strategies to overcome some of these obstacles are also proposed. Priorities for action are outlined, including standardization, iteration between basic and applied research, and adoption of smart manufacturing. With concerted efforts from academia and industry, flexible electronics will bring a bigger impact to society as promised. The coronavirus disease (COVID) pandemic and the decision-making process of whether to perform urgent procedures during a surge are issues that will likely not disappear in the near future as reflected by the current rise in COVID cases in the southern and western United States and the resurgent numbers of confirmed cases around that world leading to are leading to new lock-downs. Multi-disciplinary discussions will continue to be important to decide individual risk and benefit profiles for patients with asymptomatic COVID patients moving forward. While imperfect, this most recent study provides more insight to some of the risks that should be weighed in these discussions. Further prospective, longitudinal research and better understanding of the heterogeneity of the COVID positive patient will further enhance understanding the decision-making process in the cardiac surgical patient through these difficult times.
Sternal wound infection (SWI) is a devastating postcardiac surgical complication. D-PLEX
(D-PLEX) is a localized prolonged release compound applied as a prophylactic at the completion of surgery to prevent SWI. The D-PLEX technology platform is built as a matrix of alternating layers of polymers and lipids, entrapping an antibiotic (doxycycline). The objective of this study was to assess the safety profile and pharmacokinetics of D-PLEX in reducing SWI rates postcardiac surgery.
Eighty-one patients were enrolled in a prospective single-blind randomized controlled multicenter study. Sixty patients were treated with both D-PLEX and standard of care (SOC) and 21 with SOC alone. Both groups were followed 6 months for safety endpoints. SWI was assessed at 90 days.
No SWI-related serious adverse events (SAEs) occurred in either group. The mean plasma C
in patients treated with D-PLEX was about 10 times lower than the value detected following the oral administration of doxycycline hyclate with an equivalent overall dose, and followed by a very low plasma concentration over the next 30 days. There were no sternal infections in the D-PLEX group (0/60) while there was one patient with a sternal infection in the control group (1/21, 4.8%).
D-PLEX was found to be safe for use in cardiac surgery patients. By providing localized prophylactic prolonged release of broad-spectrum antibiotics, D-PLEX has the potential to prevent SWI postcardiac surgery and long-term postoperative hospitalization, reducing high-treatment costs, morbidity, and mortality.

Chamomile has long been used as a medicinal plant due to its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. Apigenin-7-O-glucoside (AG) is one of the major ethanol extract components from chamomile; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear.
In this study, the antioxidant potential and the anti-inflammatory activities of AG were analysed and compared with those of trolox. We demonstrate the protective effects of AG on free radical-induced oxidative damage of DNA, proteins and erythrocytes. Flow cytometry assay was used to detect ROS production. Additionally, the expression of anti-oxidation-related and inflammation-related factors was detected by ELISA and Western blotting, respectively.
AG and trolox showed different efficiency as antioxidant in different experimental systems. AG had similar effect as trolox to inhibit H
O
-induced ROS production in RAW264.7 cells, while exerted stronger inhibition against free radical-induced oxidative damage on erythrocytes than trolox. Interestingly, compared with trolox, AG also had stronger inhibitory effect on LPS-induced NF-κB/NLRP3/caspase-1 signalling in RAW246.7 cells.
These results suggest the potential of AG as a pharmaceutical drug for anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation, and the combined usage of AG and trolox might promote its efficacy. Our findings will provide new insights into the development of new drugs with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory functions.
