Anemia within type 2 diabetes in Africa: An organized evaluate and meta-analysis.
Since the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there have been intense structural studies on purified recombinant viral components and inactivated viruses. However, structural and ultrastructural evidence on how the SARS-CoV-2 infection progresses in the frozen-hydrated native cellular context is scarce, and there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge on the SARS-CoV-2 replicative cycle. To correlate the cytopathic events induced by SARS-CoV-2 with virus replication process under the frozen-hydrated condition, here we established a unique multi-modal, multi-scale cryo-correlative platform to image SARS-CoV-2 infection in Vero cells. This platform combines serial cryoFIB/SEM volume imaging and soft X-ray cryo-tomography with cell lamellae-based cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) and subtomogram averaging. The results place critical SARS-CoV-2 structural events â€" e.g. viral RNA transport portals on double membrane vesicles, virus assembly and budding intermediates, virus egress pathways, and native virus spike structures from intracellular assembled and extracellular released virus - in the context of whole-cell images. The latter revealed numerous heterogeneous cytoplasmic vesicles, the formation of membrane tunnels through which viruses exit, and the drastic cytoplasm invasion into the nucleus. This integrated approach allows a holistic view of SARS-CoV-2 infection, from the whole cell to individual molecules.
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected individuals as well as disease-specific brain tumor organizations. In order to better understand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on brain tumor organizations, the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) carried out an international survey to identify organizational changes induced by the virus and approaches adopted to address challenges.

A 37-question online survey consisting of categorical and qualitative questions was developed and circulated to 130 brain tumor organizations across the world. Seventy-seven organizations from 22 countries completed the survey (59% return rate). Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to present the results.

Rod microglia were reported frequently in the early 1900s by neuropathologists in post-mortem cases of general paresis, Alzheimer's disease and encephalitis, and then remained largely ignored for almost 100 years. Recent reports have renewed interest in rod microglia, most notably after experimental traumatic brain injury. Rod microglia are formed by the narrowing of the soma and retraction of planar processes, which results in the appearance of an elongated, rod-shaped cell. Rod microglia are most commonly observed in the cortex, aligned perpendicular to the dural surface and adjacent to neuronal processes; in the hippocampus, they are aligned perpendicular to hippocampal layers. Furthermore, rod microglia form trains with one another, apical end to basal end. By replicating the process of sketching microscopic observation, rod microglia are re-defined by circumnutation around the long axis. In this update, we summarize the rod microglia variant in clinical and experimental literature and advocate for investigation into mechanisms of rod microglia origin and function.Adults with congenital heart disease are at risk for persisting executive function deficits, which are known to affect academic achievement and quality of life. Alterations in white -matter microstructure are associated with cognitive impairments in adolescents with congenital heart disease. This study aimed to identify microstructural alterations potentially associated with executive function deficits in adults with congenital heart disease. Diffusion tensor imaging and tract-based spatial statistics were conducted in 45 patients (18 females) and 54 healthy controls (26 females) aged 18-32 years. Fractional anisotropy of white matter diffusion was compared between groups and correlated with an executive function score, derived from an extensive neuropsychological test battery. Patients showed widespread bilateral reduction in fractional anisotropy (P  less then  0.05, multiple comparison corrected) compared to controls. Lower fractional anisotropy was driven by patients with moderate and severe defect complexity (compared to controls P  less then  0.001). Executive function scores were lower in patients (P  less then  0.05) and associated with lower fractional anisotropy in the left superior corona radiata and the corticospinal tract (corrected P  less then  0.05). Our findings confirm alterations of white matter microstructure in adults with congenital heart disease, mainly in those patients of moderate to severe complexity. These alterations are associated with impairments in executive functioning. A better understanding of the neurocognitive deficits may help counselling and care of patients with congenital heart disease across their lifespan and have the potential to improve their outcome and quality of life.Non-convulsive status epilepticus describes the syndrome of unexplained impaired consciousness in critically ill patients. Non-convulsive status epilepticus is very likely to lead to delayed diagnosis and poor outcomes because of the absence of convulsive symptoms. EEG is essential for the diagnosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus to establish the association between periodic discharges and rhythmic delta activity in addition to ictal epileptiform discharges according to the Salzburg criteria. Arterial spin labelling, a type of perfusion MRI, has been applied for rapid and non-invasive evaluation of the ictal state. Ictal cerebral cortical hyperperfusion is the most common finding to demonstrate focal onset seizures. Hyperperfusion of the thalamus on single photon emission computed tomography was found in patients with impaired awareness seizures. We hypothesized that thalamocortical hyperperfusion on arterial spin labelling identifies non-convulsive status epilepticus and such thalamic hyperperfusion specifically associates with periodic/rhythmic discharges producing impaired consciousness without convulsion.
