Synthetic materials commonly used in the packaging industry generate a considerable amount of waste each year. Chitosan is a promising feedstock for the production of functional biomaterials. From a biological point of view, chitosan is very attractive for food packaging. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a set of chitosan-metal oxide films and different chitosan-modified graphene (oxide) films against two foodborne pathogens Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33560 and Listeria monocytogenes 19115. Moreover, we wanted to check whether the incorporation of antimicrobial constituents such as TiO2, ZnO, Fe2O3, Ag, and graphene oxide (GO) into the polymer matrices can improve the antibacterial properties of these nanocomposite films. Finally, this research helps elucidate the interactions of these materials with eukaryotic cells. All chitosan-metal oxide films and chitosan-modified graphene (oxide) films displayed improved antibacterial (C. jejuni ATCC 33560 and L. monocytogenes 19115) properties compared to native chitosan films. The CS-ZnO films had excellent antibacterial activity towards L. monocytogenes (90% growth inhibition). Moreover, graphene-based chitosan films caused high inhibition of both tested strains. Chitosan films with graphene (GO, GOP, GOP-HMDS, rGO, GO-HMDS, rGOP), titanium dioxide (CS-TiO2 201a, CS-TiO2 201b, CS-TiO2 21, CS-TiO2 11a, CS-TiO2 11b) and zinc oxide (CS-ZnO 201a, CS-ZnO 201b) may be considered as a safe, non-cytotoxic packaging materials in the future. In this research work, the quantitative characterization of a binary blend comprised of two pozzolans (sugar cane straw (SCSA)-sugar cane bagasse ashes (SCBA), bamboo leaf ash (BLAsh)-SCBA and paper sludge (PS)-fly ash (FA)) taking into account the calculated values of the kinetic parameters of the reaction in the pozzolan/calcium hydroxide system is shown. The paper shows the most significant and important results obtained by the authors in the quantitative assessment (calculation of kinetic parameters) of the pozzolanic reaction of different mixtures of pozzolanic materials that are residues from agriculture or industrial processes. This allows a direct and rigorous comparison of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials. The values of the kinetic parameters (reaction rate constant or activation free energy) constitute a very precise quantitative index of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials, which is very useful for its employment in the elaboration of ternary cements. This paper shows that the binary blends 1SCBA60Blash40, 1SCBA50Blash50, 1SCBA70Blash30 have a very high pozzolanic reactivity followed by PSLSFA, 2SCBA50SCSA50, PSISFA and SCWI.The poor prognosis of chronic liver disease (CLD) generates the need to investigate the evolving mechanisms of disease progression, thus disclosing therapeutic targets before development of clinical complications. Considering the central role of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in pre-neoplastic advanced CLD, the present study aimed at investigating the progression of CLD from an endothelial holistic perspective. RNAseq defined the transcriptome of primary LSECs isolated from three pre-clinical models of advanced CLD, during the progression of the disease, and from fresh human cirrhotic tissue. At each stage of the disease, the effects of LSECs secretome on neighboring cells and proteomic analysis of LSECs-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) were also determined. CLD was associated with deep common modifications in the transcriptome of LSECs in the pre-clinical models. Pathway enrichment analysis showed predominance of genes related with pro-oncogenic, cellular communication processes, and EVs biogenesis during CLD progression. Crosstalk experiments revealed endothelial EVs as potent angiocrine effectors. The proteome of LSECs EVs showed stage-specific signatures, including over-expression of tropomyosin-1. Proof-of-principle experiments treating cirrhotic HSCs with recombinant tropomyosin-1 suggested de-activating effects. Our data provide the basis for discovering novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for new disease-modifying treatments for patients with advanced CLD.The aim of this study is to build a decision support system (DSS) to select radical prostatectomy (RP) or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients. We used an individual state-transition model based on predictive models for estimating tumor control and toxicity probabilities. We performed analyses on a synthetically generated dataset of 1000 patients with realistic clinical parameters, externally validated by comparison to randomized clinical trials, and set up an in silico clinical trial for elderly patients. Autophinib in vitro We assessed the cost-effectiveness (CE) of the DSS for treatment selection by comparing it to randomized treatment allotment. Using the DSS, 47.8% of synthetic patients were selected for RP and 52.2% for EBRT. During validation, differences with the simulations of late toxicity and biochemical failure never exceeded 2%. The in silico trial showed that for elderly patients, toxicity has more influence on the decision than TCP, and the predicted QoL depends on the initial erectile function. The DSS is estimated to result in cost savings (EUR 323 (95% CI EUR 213-433)) and more quality-adjusted life years (QALYs; 0.11 years, 95% CI 0.00-0.22) than randomized treatment selection.Acoustic metamaterials are large-scale materials with small-scale structures. These structures allow for unusual interaction with propagating sound and endow the large-scale material with exceptional acoustic properties not found in normal materials. However, their multi-scale nature means that the manufacture of these materials is not trivial, often requiring micron-scale resolution over centimetre length scales. In this review, we bring together a variety of acoustic metamaterial designs and separately discuss ways to create them using the latest trends in additive manufacturing. We highlight the advantages and disadvantages of different techniques that act as barriers towards the development of realisable acoustic metamaterials for practical audio and ultrasonic applications and speculate on potential future developments.
