Twenty Dutch Landrace pigs received either a hand-sewn (
= 8) or an ELANA (
= 12) left internal thoracic artery to left anterior descending artery anastomosis, using off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. Six-month patency rates were demonstrated by coronary angiography and histological evaluation. Throughout, procedural details and complication rates were collected.

The ELANA Heart Bypass demonstrated 0% mortality and complication rates during follow-up. It was demonstrated feasible, with comparable perioperative flow measurements (ELANA vs hand-sewn, median [min to max], 24 [14 to 28] vs 17 [12 to 31] mL/min;
= 0.601) and fast construction times (3 [3 to 7] vs 31 [26 to 37] min;
< 0.001). Yet, an extra hemostatic stitch was needed in 25% of the ELANA versus 12.5% of the hand-sewn anastomoses. The 6-month patency rate of the ELANA Heart Bypass was 83.3% versus 100% in hand-sewn anastomoses. The 2 occluded ELANA-anastomoses were defined model-based errors.

The ELANA Heart Bypass facilitates a sutureless distal coronary anastomosis. A design change is suggested to improve hemostasis and will be evaluated in future translational studies. This new technique is a potential alternative to hand-sewn anastomoses in (minimally invasive) coronary surgery.

To study the safety and feasibility of implementation of precise radiotherapy with inducement of an apnea-like condition.

Two patients with lung tumors underwent precise radiotherapy under an apnea-like condition. The apnea-like condition was induced 11 times between the two patients for tumor localization and treatment. The changes in the blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate, and end-tidal carbon dioxide during the apnea-like periods were observed, and the incidence of adverse reactions was recorded.

The average apnea-like time was 6.2 minutes (range, 3-9 minutes), and the average radiotherapy time was 4.6 minutes (range, 1-7 minutes). The lowest blood oxygen saturation level was 97%, with a change of <1%. The heart rate and average arterial blood pressure increased during the apnea-like periods. Contact sores appeared on the patients' posterior pharyngeal wall after the first apnea-like period; no other adverse events occurred.

We aimed to investigate the effect of long non-coding RNA nuclear-enriched abundant transcript 1 (lnc-NEAT1) on regulating hepatocyte proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammation during hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Human liver cells (HL-7702) were cultured under glucose-free and oxygen-free conditions to construct the I/R injury model. Expression of lnc-NEAT1 was detected in this model and in normal cells. Plasmids of control overexpression [NC(+)], lnc-NEAT1 overexpression [NEAT1(+)], control short hairpin (sh)RNA [NC(-)], and lnc-NEAT1 shRNA [NEAT1(-)] were transfected into HL-7702 cells and subsequently subjected to I/R treatment. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, apoptosis-related proteins, and inflammatory cytokines were assessed.

Lnc-NEAT1 expression was elevated in the I/R group compared with the normal group. Cell proliferation was decreased in the NEAT1(+) group compared with the NC(+) group but increased in NEAT1(-) compared with NC(-). The apoptosis rate increased in the NEAT1(+) group compared with the NC(+) group but decreased in NEAT1(-) compared with NC(-). Western blot assay (detection of apoptosis-related proteins) showed similar results. Expression of interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α increased in the NEAT1(+) group compared with NC(+) but decreased in NEAT1(-) compared with NC(-).

This study aimed to investigate the effects of propofol on cardiac function and miR-494 expression in rats with hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Forty healthy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to the sham operation group and three hepatic I/R injury groups. The I/R injury groups included I/R injury only (I/R group), treatment with propofol (propofol group), and treatment with propofol + overexpressed miR-494 (propofol+miR-494 group). Apoptosis of myocardial cells and changes in cardiac function indices, including left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, left ventricular end-systolic diameter, and left ventricular posterior wall thickness, as well as changes in miR-494, were monitored.

The apoptotic rate of myocardial cells in the I/R group was higher, cardiac function was deteriorated, and miR-494 levels were elevated compared with the sham group. The apoptotic rate was lower, cardiac function was improved, and miR-494 levels were suppressed in the propofol group compared with the I/R group.
