A correlation between thyroid hormone sensitivity and thyroid cancer has yet to be determined, and this study aimed to assess the association between thyroid hormone sensitivity indicators and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in Chinese patients presenting with thyroid nodules (TNs).
A sample of 1998 patients undergoing thyroid surgery at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, who were diagnosed with TNs, were the focus of this study. Central sensitivity to thyroid hormones, including the thyroid stimulating hormone index (TSHI), TSH T4 resistance index (TT4RI), thyroid feedback quantile-based index (TFQI), and parametric thyroid feedback quantile-based index (PTFQI), was scrutinized. The FT3 to FT4 ratio served as a metric for assessing peripheral sensitivity to thyroid hormone. To assess the connection between thyroid hormone sensitivity indicators and the risk of PTC, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted.
The results of the study showed that PTC risk was positively associated with central thyroid hormone sensitivity indicators, specifically TSHI, TT4RI, TFQI, and PTFQI. For every one-SD increase in TSHI, TT4RI, TFQI, and PTFQI, the corresponding odds ratios (OR, 95% CI) for PTC were: 131 (118-146), 101 (101-102), 194 (145-260), and 182 (141-234), respectively. To evaluate ovarian responsiveness to Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone agonist (gonadorelin) and Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) combinations, potentially including progesterone (Controlled Internal Drug Release/CIDR), and to ascertain the consequent conception rate in timed artificial insemination, a controlled experiment was carried out. Ethiopian Boran (n=60) and Boran*Holstein cross (n=66) postpartum cows were randomly allocated to four treatment groups: Ovsynch (gonadorelin at start, PGF2 7 days later, second gonadorelin after 48 hours, and insemination 19 hours post-second gonadorelin); CIDR+Ovsynch (Ovsynch protocol with a CIDR device inserted for seven days); Cosynch (Ovsynch protocol with insemination scheduled at the time of the second gonadorelin injection); and CIDR+Cosynch (Cosynch protocol coupled with a CIDR device in the vagina for seven days).
No discernible difference (P>0.05) was observed in ovulation rate between day 9 gonadorelin treatment and control groups (88.33% in Boran; 78.79% in Boran*Holstein crosses). Furthermore, the interval from day 9 gonadorelin administration to ovulation exhibited no significant difference (P>0.05), with 365113 hours observed in Boran and 36057111 hours in Boran*Holstein crosses. Boran cattle demonstrated smaller dominant follicle sizes (1495019mm) and corpus lutea (1631033mm) immediately prior to ovulation compared to Boran*Holstein cattle (1912049mm and 2028043mm, respectively) showing a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). Following PGF2 administration, Boran (1191074 ng/mL) demonstrated a substantially higher (P<0.05) plasma progesterone concentration compared to Boran*Holstein (613027 ng/mL), but a lower (P<0.05) luteolysis rate (879%) compared to Boran-Holstein (969%). The use of CIDR resulted in a notably increased conception rate in cows. Boran*Holstein crossbreds treated with CIDR had a 7200% conception rate, significantly greater than the 3902% rate for untreated cows. In purebred Boran cows, the CIDR-treated group saw a notable improvement, achieving a conception rate of 7407%, compared to 5152% for the control group. Insemination performed 19 hours after gonadorelin administration exhibited a superior conception rate (786% for Boran; 7143% for Boran*Holstein) than insemination concurrent with gonadorelin (6929% for Boran; 6667% for Boran*Holstein).
Boran cows' preovulatory follicles and corpora lutea are smaller, their progesterone levels are higher, and their response to PGF2-induced luteolysis is lower than that observed in Boran-Holstein crossbreds. Boran cattle's CL show a less pronounced reaction to PGF2 in contrast to the Boran-Holstein CL. Boran and Boran-Holstein cows showed a marked improvement in their conception rate as a consequence of the use of CIDR.
Boran cows, unlike Boran-Holstein crossbreeds, exhibit smaller preovulatory follicles, smaller corpora lutea, greater progesterone amounts, and a lower rate of response to luteolysis by PGF2. PGF2's effect on the CL of Boran cattle is seemingly less pronounced than on the CL of Boran-Holstein crossbreds. Conception rates in Boran and Boran*Holstein cows experienced a considerable elevation due to the use of CIDR.
