First observed in 1920s, the Warburg effects have inspired scientists to harness the unique glucose metabolism of cancer cells for targeted therapy for a century. Carbohydrate-drug conjugates are explicitly designed for selective uptake by cancer cells overexpressing glucose transporters. We summarize the progress in developing glycoconjugates for cancer-specific targeting and treatment over the past decade (2010-2020) and point to some future directions in this field.
The rapid pace of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic (COVID-19) presents significant challenges to midwives and nurses. This study aimed to explore midwifery and nursing interventions to limit the transmission of COVID-19 among women in their third trimester of pregnancy, to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infection and promote safety of care for women and their infants.

We completed a retrospective review of medical records from 35 women in their third trimester of pregnancy with SARS-CoV-2, admitted to one hospital in Wuhan, China in January and February 2020. We investigated the clinical characteristics of the COVID-19 infection in pregnancy, and the individualized midwifery and nursing care offered, including environmental protection, prevention of nosocomial infection, maternal observations, monitoring of signs and symptoms of COVID-19, and psychological care.

Thirty-one women had a caesarean section, and four had vaginal births. Retrospective analysis of midwifery and nursing strategies implemented to care for these women showed no maternal complications or nosocomial infections.

The care strategies we implemented could prevent complications and nosocomial infection in the third trimester of pregnancy, thus ensuring the safety of women and their infants. Further research needs to determine treatment priorities for women infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Notably, a deep understanding of this fragile site of the immune system later led to the development of immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs). At the beginning of the discovery, it seemed that these agents could push the boundaries of cancer treatment, however, their life-threatening adverse events have muted the enthusiasm into their application in cancer. It was here that nanotechnology came to the aid of ICBs, as it became evident that the combination of nano-products with ICBs guarantees the delivery of the agents into the tumor nidus, where paralyzed immune cells are waiting for healing. In the present review, we tried to illustrate a new portrait from the befitting impacts of ICBs either as single or in a combined-modal strategy with nanoparticles.Prunus armeniaca (L.) is a member of the Rosaceae, subfamily Prunoideae, shows anticancer, antitubercular, antimutagenic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cardioprotective activities. Here we fractionated the leaves extract of this highly medicinally important plant for antileishmanial activity. In the current study, the leaves extract was fractionated and characterized using column and thin layer chromatography by n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents. Twelve fractions were isolated and subjected for evaluation of their cytotoxicity and in vitro antileishmanial activity against promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania tropica. Among all fractions used, the fraction (F7) exhibited the strongest antileishmanial activity. The bioactive fraction was further characterized by spectroscopy (FTIR, UV-Vis), and GC-MS analysis. The in silico docking was carried out to find the active site of PTR1. All derived fractions exhibited toxicity in the safety range IC50 > 100 μg/ml. The fraction (F7) showed significantly the highest antipromastigotes activity with IC5011.48 ± 0.82 μg/ml and antiamastigotes activity with IC50 21.03 ± 0.98 μg/ml compared with control i.e. 11.60 ± 0.70 and 22.03 ± 1.02 μg/ml respectively. The UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis revealed the presence of six absorption peaks and the FTIR spectrum revealed the presence of alkane, aldehyde, carboxylic acid, thiols, alkynes, and carbonyls compounds The GC-MS chromatogram exhibited the presence of nine compounds (a) benzeneethanol, alpha, beta dimethyl, (b)carbazic acid, 3-(1 propylbutylidene)-, ethyl ester, (c)1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisooctyl ester, (d)benzeneethanamine a-methyl, (e)2aminononadecane, (f)2-heptanamine-5-methyl, (g)cyclobutanol, (h)cyclopropyl carbine, and (i)nitric acid, nonyl ester. Among all compounds, the 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisooctyl ester bound well to the PTR1 receptor. Fraction (F7) showed acceptable results with no cytotoxicity. However, in vivo studies are required in the future.Gemmatimonas phototrophica is, so far, the only described phototrophic species of the bacterial phylum Gemmatimonadetes. Its cells contain a unique type of photosynthetic complex with the reaction center surrounded by a double ring antenna, however they can also grow in the dark using organic carbon substrates. Its photosynthesis genes were received via horizontal gene transfer from Proteobacteria. This raises two questions; how the horizontally transferred photosynthesis apparatus has integrated into the cellular machinery, and how much light-derived energy actually contributes to the cellular metabolism? To address these points, the photosynthetic reactions were studied on several levels, from photophysics of the reaction center to cellular growth. Flash photolysis measurements and bacteriochlorophyll fluorescence kinetic measurements documented the presence of fully functional type-2 reaction centers with a large light harvesting antenna. MK-8353 nmr When illuminated, the bacterial cells reduced their respiration rate by 58 ± 5%, revealing that oxidative phosphorylation was replaced by photophosphorylation.
