This review also highlights critical gaps in our understanding of HABs as a climate change co-stressor that must be addressed in order to develop management plans that adequately protect fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic ecosystems, and human health. Ultimately, incorporating HAB species into experiments and monitoring programs where the effects of multiple climate change stressors are considered will provide a more ecologically relevant perspective of the structure and function of marine ecosystems in future, climate-altered systems. Climate change is predicted to increase the severity and prevalence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). In the past twenty years, omics techniques such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics have transformed that data landscape of many fields including the study of HABs. Advances in technology have facilitated the creation of many publicly available omics datasets that are complementary and shed new light on the mechanisms of HAB formation and toxin production. Genomics have been used to reveal differences in toxicity and nutritional requirements, while transcriptomics and proteomics have been used to explore HAB species responses to environmental stressors, and metabolomics can reveal mechanisms of allelopathy and toxicity. In this review, we explore how omics data may be leveraged to improve predictions of how climate change will impact HAB dynamics. We also highlight important gaps in our knowledge of HAB prediction, which include swimming behaviors, microbial interactions and evolution that can be addressed by future studies with omics tools. Lastly, we discuss approaches to incorporate current omics datasets into predictive numerical models that may enhance HAB prediction in a changing world. With the ever-increasing omics databases, leveraging these data for understanding climate-driven HAB dynamics will be increasingly powerful. Climate projections suggest-with substantial certainty-that global warming >1.5 °C will occur by mid-century (2050). Population is also projected to increase, amplifying the demands for food, fuel, water and sanitation, which, in turn, escalate nutrient pollution. Global projections of nutrient pollution, however, are less certain than those of climate as there are regionally decreasing trends projected in Europe, and stabilization of nutrient use in North America and Australia. In this review of the effects of eutrophication and climate on harmful algae, some of the complex, subtle, and non-intuitive effects and interactions on the physiology of both harmful and non-harmful taxa are emphasized. In a future ocean, non-harmful diatoms may be disproportionately stressed and mixotrophs advantaged due to changing nutrient stoichiometry and forms of nutrients, temperature, stratification and oceanic pH. Modeling is advancing, but there is much yet to be understood, in terms of physiology, biogeochemistry and trophodynamics and how both harmful and nonharmful taxa may change in an uncertain future driven by anthropogenic activities. Pifithrin-μ clinical trial BACKGROUND Measles is endemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and 89-94% herd immunity is required to halt its transmission. Much of the World Health Organization African Region, including the DRC, has vaccination coverage below the 95% level required to eliminate measles, heightening concern of inadequate measles immunity. METHODS We assessed 6706 children aged 6-59 months whose mothers were selected for interview in the 2013-2014 DRC Demographic and Health Survey. History of measles was obtained by maternal report, and classification of children who had measles was completed using maternal recall and measles immunoglobulin G serostatus obtained from a multiplex chemiluminescent automated immunoassay dried blood spot analysis. A logistic regression model was used to identify associations of covariates with measles and seroprotection, and vaccine effectiveness (VE) was calculated. RESULTS Out of our sample, 64% of children were seroprotected. Measles vaccination was associated with protection against measles (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.03, 0.81) when administered to children 12 months of age or older. Vaccination was predictive of seroprotection at all ages. VE was highest (88%) among children 12-24 months of age. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated lower than expected seroprotection against measles among vaccinated children. Understanding the factors that affect host immunity to measles will aid in developing more efficient and effective immunization programs in DRC. The goal of this work was to demonstrate that Doppler ultrasound (DUS) after pharmacological stimulation of erection (PSE) can be used to evaluate the presence and intensity of a cavernovenous leak (CVL) suspected in erectile dysfunction (ED) patients. The study was built around 50 DUS-PSE exams of penile arteries and veins, which were carried out 3, 5, 10 and 20minutes after pharmacological stimulation. Measured parameters were end diastolic velocity of the cavernous arteries and mean velocity of the deep penile vein and/or penile superficial veins. A score from 0 to 3 was attributed to each according to the recorded velocities. A final score from 0 to 9 was established by adding the three values patients quoting 0 and 1 were classified as "no leak" (n=8); from 2 to 9 (n=42) as "leaking". Penile computed tomography (CT-scan) under identical pharmacological stimulation identified the cavernovenous leak to be compared with the DUS-PSE results, which were valid in 47 cases (94%), with 97.6% sensitivity and 77.7% specificity. The kappa correlation coefficient for CT-scan diagnosis of suspected CVL was 0.7875 (P less then 0.001). In addition, we found that end diastolic velocity in the cavernous artery, considered up until now as the gold standard in cases of suspected CVL was insufficient (negative predictive value=47%). In addition to its well-known diagnostic value regarding ED of arterial origin, DUS-PSE is an excellent screening test for CVL, especially in young patients without vascular risk factors who are resistant to medical treatments. For those with well-established CVL, confirmation by CT-scan to discuss possible surgery should be the next step. Moreover, DUS-PSE is useful in postoperative monitoring.
