We provided first projections of AF subtypes for Italy and Europe. The worse cardiovascular risk profile of persistent and permanent forms indicates an increased burden in future decades.
The purpose of this study is to design a water calorimeter with three goals in mind (a) To be fully magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible; (b) To be imaged using kV cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), MV portal imaging or MRI for accurate positioning; (c) To accommodate both vertical and horizontal beam incidence, as well as volumetric deliveries or Gamma Knife®. Following this, the calorimeter performance will be measured using an accelerator-based high-energy photon beam.

A portable 4°C cooled stagnant water calorimeter was built using MR-compatible materials. The walls consist of layers of acrylic plastic, aerogel-based material acting as thermal insulation, as well as tubing for coolant to flow to keep the calorimeter temperature stable at 4°C. The lid contains additional pathways for coolant to flow through as well as two hydraulically driven stirrers. The water calorimeter was positioned in an Elekta Versa using kV CBCT imaging as well as orthogonal MV image pairs. Absolute absorbed dose to water was then determined under a 6MV flattening filter-free (FFF) beam. This was compared against reference dosimetry results that were measured under identical conditions with an Exradin A1SL ionization chamber with a calibration coefficient directly traceable to the National Research Council Canada.

The dose to water determined with the calorimeter (n=30) agreed with the A1SL ionization chamber reference dose measurements (n=15) to within 0.25%. The uncertainty associated with the water calorimeter absorbed dose measurement was estimated to be 0.54% (k=1).

An MR-compatible water calorimeter was successfully built and absolute absorbed dose to water under a conventional 6MV FFF beam was determined successfully as a first-stage validation of the system.

To investigate causative viruses in patients with postviral olfactory disorders (PVOD).

Case-control study.

One hundred fifty-one consecutive patients diagnosed with PVOD were enrolled, and samples from 38 patients who visited the doctor within 3 months of symptom onset were collected and analyzed. Thirty-two individuals who underwent surgery for nasal septal deviation during the same time period were collected as the control group. The Sniffin' Sticks psychophysical olfactory test was used to evaluate olfactory function. Olfactory cleft specimens were collected using nasopharyngeal flocked swabs (COPAN FLOQSwabs). Eighteen viruses were tested for with the Luminex xTAG RVP FAST v2 Assay Kit.

Out of the 38 patients with PVOD, rhinoviruses were detected in 13 patients, and coronavirus OC43 was detected in one patient. The frequency of positive virus detection in the patients with anosmia was higher than in those with hyposmia (58.8% vs. 19.0%, P = 0.018). In control group, rhinovirus was identified in one patient (3.1%). Nasal obstruction was the most common symptom and was experienced by 71.0% of patients.

Rhinovirus and coronavirus are more commonly identified in PVOD. Our methods represent an approach to screen for viruses that may be involved in PVOD.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the recurrence rate of lithiasis following minimally invasive surgery to identify risk factors and mechanisms for recurrence of salivary gland lithiasis.

Retrospective case series.

A retrospective study was conducted including all patients treated for salivary gland lithiasis by minimally invasive surgery, such as sialendoscopy, intracorporeal lithotripsy, extracorporeal lithotripsy, transoral approach, and combined approach in our Department. We analyzed the recurrence rate of salivary lithiasis, their topography and timeline.

Three hundred four patients were included in this study, the mean age was 49 years (range 12-90 years), and the mean duration of follow-up was 19.8 months (range 0-66 months). Fifteen patients (5%) presented secondary lithiasis. In all but one case, recurrences involved the same gland as primary lithiasis, and most frequently the submandibular gland. Recurrences occurred from 3 to 46 months postoperatively. Fourteen patients, who presented recurrence, had been initially treated by transoral approach. Recurrent lithiasis were treated by transoral approach or submandibulectomy.

Salivary gland lithiasis recurrence was rare after minimally invasive salivary gland surgery. This study reinforced the concept that salivary gland lithiasis should be considered as a duct pathology.

The Schistosoma japonicum (Sjaponicum)-infected ApoE gene deficiency (ApoE
) mice were used to determine effect of ApoE on hepatic immunopathology.

Murine activities and appetite, body weight, and ratio of liver weight to its body weight (Hepatic mass index, HMI) were observed. click here Worm load and liver egg burden were evaluated as the infection intensity. Number and size of liver egg granulomas and serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were investigated. We analysed hepatic fibrosis by markers of fibrosis in tissue, detected hepatic Th17 and Treg frequency by flow cytometry, and measured hepatic expressions of RORγt, Foxp3, IL-17A and TGF-β1 via qPCR. Lipid metabolism was determined by serum levels of cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) as well as hepatic Oil red O staining.

In the infected ApoE
mice, the increased infection intensity aggravated the hepatic immunopathology (evidenced by increased HMI, elevated egg granulomas and increased ALT levels) and fibrosis (increased hepatic collagen deposition). ApoE deficiency resulted in significantly elevated ratio of hepatic Th17/Treg and higher serum levels of TC and TG, along with higher level of hepatic Oil red O staining.

ApoE deficiency promotes hepatic pathology and fibrosis by exacerbating Th17/Treg imbalance and altering lipid metabolism in murine schistosomiasis japonica.
