An analysis of the position statements of secular US medical and surgical professional societies on physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and euthanasia have not been published recently. Available statements were evaluated for position, content, and sentiment.

In order to create a comprehensive list of secular medical and surgical societies, the results of a systematic search using Google were cross-referenced with a list of societies that have a seat on the American Medical Association House of Delegates. Societies with position statements were identified. These statements were divided into 5 categories opposed to PAS and/or euthanasia, studied neutrality, supportive, acknowledgement without statement, and no statement. Linguistic analysis was performed using RapidMinder in order to determine word frequency and sentiment respective to individual statements. To ensure accuracy, only statements with word counts > 100 were analyzed. A 2-tailed independent t test was used to test for variance among sentiment sutrality statements cite potential risks of PAS legalization and suggest that good palliative care might diminish a patient's desire for PAS.

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the commonest lymphoma that is highly aggressive where one-third of the patients relapse despite effective treatment. Interaction between the lymphoma cells and the non-clonal immune cells within the bone marrow microenvironment is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of DLBCL.

We used flow cytometry to characterize the proportion of B cell subpopulations in the bone marrow (N = 47) and peripheral blood (N = 54) of 75DLBCLpatients at diagnosis and study their impact on survival.

Anergic B cells in the bone marrow(BM), characterized as having CD21(-/low)/CD38- expression, influenced survival with high numbers (defined as > 13.9%) being associated with significantly shorter overall survival (59.7 months vs 113.6 months, p = 0.0038). Interestingly, low numbers of anergic B cells in the BM (defined as ≤13.9%) was associated with germinal center B cell type of DLBCL (p = 0.0354) that is known to have superior rates of survival when compared to activated B cell type. Finally, Cox regression analysis in our cohort of patients established that the inferior prognosis of having high numbers of anergic B cells in the bone marrow was independent of the established Revised International Prognostic Index (R-IPI) score.

In this paper we explore how the opening of the healthcare sector to private digital companies challenges the existing social contract and the NHS's solidaristic character, and impacts on public trust. We start by critically discussing different examples of partnerships between the NHS and private companies that collect and use data. We then analyse the relationship between trust and solidarity, and investigate how this relationship changes in the context of digital companies entering the healthcare system. Finally, we show ways for the NHS to maintain public trust by putting in place a solidarity grounded partnership model with companies seeking to access patient data.
