Basic Geometrical Ideas

Geometry
Geometry is made up of geo meaning Earth and metry meaning measurement. It is branch of mathematics which deals with shapes and their measurement.

Point
A point determines a location in the space.

Line Segment
Line segment is a part of a line having two end points. It is the shortest distance between two points.

Line
A line is a collection of points along a straight path that goes to infinity in both the direction. It has no end points.

Intersecting lines
If two lines have one common point, they are called intersecting lines.

Parallel lines
If a pair of lines has no point in common, they are said to be parallel lines.

Ray
A ray is a portion of a line. It starts at one point and goes endlessly in a direction.

Curve
Any shape with a starting and ending point is a curve

Simple curve
If a curve does not cross itself, then it is called a simple curve

Open curve
A curve with different starting and ending point is called an open curve

Closed curve
A curve with same starting and ending point is called a closed curve

Polygon
A closed figure made up of line segments is called a polygon

Sides
The line segments forming a polygon are called it’s sides

Vertex
A meeting point of pair of sides is called it is vertex

Adjacent vertices
The end points of the same side of a polygon are called the adjacent vertices
