The current study explored barriers and facilitators that affected the acceptance of the HPV vaccine by mothers of adolescents. This paper explores the qualitative findings from a larger mixed-methods study. Six focus groups were conducted (N = 33) throughout Trinidad and Tobago with mothers of adolescent girls. Three major themes emerged a) cervical cancer and vaccine knowledge, b) barriers to uptake, and c) rephrasing the vaccine strategy. Data indicated that no widespread strategies to educate the population about the vaccine had occurred. Barriers to uptake of the vaccine were related to a lack of information on the efficacy and safety of HPV vaccines. Parents were unaware that the HPV caused cervical cancer. It is recommended that physicians and other health professionals be used to deliver targeted messages to parents and adolescents to improve uptake of the vaccine.Jewish tradition prescribes rituals and prohibitions for the first week, month, and year after a death, which provide an organized framework for meaning-making, constructing continuing bonds, and establishing the memory of the deceased within the community. After reviewing traditional Jewish customs, this article uses ethnographic examples to explore the diverse ways in which these religious and cultural frames manifest in the lived experiences of American Jews, whose Jewish identities and practices are often fluid, contradictory, and continually evolving as they search for personally-meaningful experiences. In dogs, the infection is usually first localized to the colon but has the propensity to later disseminate hematogenously to many other organs, with marked tropism for the eyes and central nervous system. Our laboratory set up a real-time PCR targeting portion D1/D2 of the 28S rRNA for identification of Prototheca species from both positive cultures (of rectal swabs and urine) and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. Prototheca bovis, P. ciferrii, and P. wickerhamii were characterized in 11 dogs with systemic or cutaneous protothecosis. Prototheca identifications were phylogenetically consistent with the new taxonomy proposed for this genus based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. As a pilot study, we screened feces and rectal scrapes from 200 asymptomatic dogs, using 2 cohorts of stray and owned animals, to determine the prevalence of intestinal carriage of Prototheca spp. The Prototheca-negative results from both cohorts of healthy dogs suggest that predisposing factors related to the host probably contribute more to the acquisition of clinical disease than exposure to contaminated environments.Objective The National Institute of Clinical Excellence recommends that adult patients with severe to profound deafness are eligible for simultaneous bilateral cochlear implantation if they are blind or have other disabilities increasing their reliance on auditory stimuli. Cochlear implant (CI) surgery is routinely performed under general anaesthesia (GA), precluding patients who have higher risk associated with GA. Recent literature describes the safety and efficacy of performing unilateral CI surgery under local anaesthesia (LA). We report the first simultaneous bilateral CI under LA in the UK in an adult patient with profound sensorineural deafness and visual impairment.Case study A 46-year-old gentleman, registered blind, presented with a 20-year history of bilateral progressive hearing loss. He was assessed as unfit for surgery under GA due to significant cardiac comorbidities. We performed simultaneous bilateral CI surgery under LA on the patient; he was discharged home the following day. Postoperative free field audiometry showed a significant improvement; speech discrimination using Bamford, Kowal and Bench sentences presented in quiet, increased from 0% pre-operatively to 100% four months post-operatively.Conclusion Simultaneous bilateral CI surgery under LA is a safe and feasible procedure for eligible patients who may otherwise have been denied surgery due to their GA risk.Objective To evaluate whether there was a relationship between the degenerative bone changes and bone quality of the mandibular condyle and articular eminence in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Methods The study group consisted of 100 patients with TMD. "Diagnostic Criteria/TMD" was used to identify the pathologies. Degenerative bone changes and bone qualities were detected by cone beam computed tomography; the bone qualities were classified using the Bone Quality Index (BQI) scale. Results No statistically significant difference was found between degenerative bone changes and bone quality of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) according to gender (p > 0.05). However, degenerative bone changes were more frequent than articular eminence in the mandibular condyle. BQI Type III was the most common bone quality among all types of degenerative bone changes. Discussion Although no causality relationship was found between the bone quality and degenerative bone changes, low bone quality was found in TMD patients.Bycatch is considered one of the most significant threats affecting cetaceans worldwide. In the North Sea, bottom-set gillnets are a specific risk for harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). Methods to estimate bycatch rates include on-board observers, remote electronic monitoring, and fishermen voluntarily reporting; none of these are systematically conducted. Additionally, necropsies of stranded animals can provide insights into bycatch occurrence and health status of individuals. There are, however, uncertainties when it comes to the assessment of bycatch in stranded animals, mainly due to the lack of diagnostic tools specific for underwater entrapment. We conducted a literature review to establish criteria that aid in the assessment of bycatch in small cetaceans, and we tested which of these criteria applied to harbor porpoises retrieved from gillnets in the Netherlands (n = 12). Twenty-five criteria were gathered from literature. Of these, "superficial incisions," "encircling imprints," and "recent ingestion of prey" were observed in the vast majority of our confirmed bycatch cases.
