Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation in the colon. 5-aminosalicylic acid and immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and biologic agents are used to treat these patients. However, patients with UC who receive immunosuppressive medications may be at risk for certain opportunistic infections. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of those opportunistic infections, and its pathogenic role has been implicated in refractory UC, but its pathogenicity should be further investigated. Here, we report a surgical case of refractory UC that demonstrated a serologically post-infected pattern of EBV at admission but that later had a high load of EBV in both the peripheral blood and colonic mucosa. These findings suggest that EBV may have been reactivated in the colon, after which it damaged the colonic mucosa and aggravated inflammation in this patient with UC. Thus, EBV might lead to severity and a refractory response against corticosteroids and anti-TNFα agents, necessitating emergency surgery. Viral surveillance for EBV in patients with refractory UC may facilitate understanding of the patient's pathophysiology and predicting response to medications, and the development of antiviral intervention for those patients may improve their prognosis.Purpose The timing and number of doses of antibiotics required for megaendoprosthetic replacement (MPR) in metastatic bone disease (MBD) is a matter of debate. The aim of our study is to present the results of a prospective cohort of MPR for MBD receiving a single dose of antibiotic at induction of anaesthesia.
All patients who underwent primary MPR in MBD were included in this prospective study. All penicillin-sensitive patients received one dose of cefuroxime 1.5gm intravenous at induction. In penicillin-allergic patients, teicoplanin 1.2gm and ciprofloxacin 500mg intravenous was administered. The patients were followed up in the wound clinic and the specialist MBD clinic at 2weeks, 3months, 6months and then annually. Data collected included demographics, primary tumours, surgical procedures, complications and duration of follow-up. All calculations were performed using SPSS
25(IBM, USA). A p value ≤ 0.05 was considered to be significant.

There were 51 patients with a mean age of 65.4years. Procedures included proximal femoral replacement (35), distal femoral replacement (7), proximal humeral replacement (4), distal humeral replacement (3) and total femoral replacement (2). Thirty-seven patients received cefuroxime, and fourteen patients received teicoplanin and ciprofloxacin at induction of anaesthesia. The deep infection rate was 1.9%. Thirty-seven patients died with a median survival of 10months (1 to 51months). Mean follow-up was 18.9months (1 to 70months).

The sequencing of the renal cell carcinoma (RCC) genome has detected several mutations with prognostic meaning. The association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is well known. The relationship among abdominal adipose tissue distribution and ccRCC-VHL and KDM5C genetic mutations is, to the knowledge of the authors, not known.

In this retrospective study, we enrolled 97 Caucasian male patients divided into three groups the control group (n = 35), the ccRCC-VHL group (n = 52) composed of ccRCC patients with VHL mutations and ccRCC-KDM5C group (n = 10) composed of ccRCC patients with KDM5C mutation. Total adipose tissue (TAT) area, VAT area and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area were measured in the groups. VAT/SAT ratio was calculated for each subject.

Statistically significant differences between ccRCC-KDM5C group and ccRCC-VHL group were obtained for TAT area (p < 0.05), VAT area (p < 0.05) and VAT/SAT ratio (p < 0.05); between ccRCC-VHL group and control group for TAT area (p < 0.001) and VAT area (p < 0.01); and between ccRCC-KDM5C group and control group for TAT area (p < 0.0001), VAT area (p < 0.0001) and SAT area (p < 0.01).

Although the cause of the pathogenesis of these disorders is still not clearly understood, emerging evidence supports a crucial role of peroxisomes. In this review, we discuss research highlighting the role of peroxisomes in brain development and its function. We also provide an overview of the major findings in recent years that highlight the role of peroxisome dysfunction in various associated diseases.Lead (Pb) is a known toxic heavy metal which accumulates in different tissues and causes oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation. The brain tissue is considered as one of the most vulnerable organs to the Pb-induced toxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of vitamin D3 (VD) supplementation against the damages caused by chronic Pb toxicity in the cerebral cortex. Forty Wistar rats were divided into four equal groups and were treated as follows control group received no treatment, VD group received 1000 IU/kg of VD by intramuscular injection every other day, Pb group received 1000 mg/L of Pb in drinking water, and Pb + VD group received VD and Pb simultaneously. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks and the analyses were conducted 24 h after the last administrations. The obtained results demonstrated that Pb significantly increased cortical lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. At the same time, there was a significant reduction in glutathione (GSH) content, catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, as well as a significant increase in the tissue level of inflammatory cytokines.
