Thus, genipin may promote COL1A1 expression by reducing the expression of the miR-29 cluster.PURPOSE To evaluate retinal vascular parameters by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in iron deficiency anemia (IDA). METHODS Thirty-two patients with IDA (study group) and 30 healthy children (control group) were enrolled in the study. All subjects underwent a complete ocular examination. OCT-A scans were performed in a 6 × 6 mm area centered on the macula. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ), non-flow area (NFA), FAZ perimeter (PERIM), acircularity index (AI) of FAZ, and foveal density (FD) were measured in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP). SCP and DCP were also scanned centered on the optic disk. Hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and ferritin were also studied and compared for both groups. RESULTS The mean age was 12.22 ± 4.48 years (ranged 5-18 years) in the study group and 12.37 ± 3.76 years (ranged 6-18 years) in the control group. The mean FAZ value was 0.290 ± 0.09 mm2 in the study group and 0.298 ± 0.11 mm2 in the control group. The mean NFA value was 0.477 ± 0.10 mm2 in the study group and 0.486 ± 0.13 mm2 in the control group (p > 0.05). FD and AI were not statistically significant between the study group and control group (p > 0.05). The mean value for SCP was statistically significant between the study group and control group (p  0.05). The mean values for capillary density on optic disk were also statistically significant between the study group and control group (p  less then  0.05). Y-27632 A negative correlation was found between serum iron, TIBC, and capillary plexus density (p  less then  0.05). A positive correlation was found between MCV and ferritin values and capillary plexus density (p  less then  0.05). CONCLUSION IDA had significantly lower capillary plexus density. We detected retinal microvascular changes in young IDA patients before significant ocular anomalies, especially ischemic changes, developed.Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common inflammatory rheumatic disease that affects the axial skeleton. In this study, we systematically reviewed Chinese AS epidemiological studies from the past 15 years to elucidate its prevalence and provide scientific data for China's health care system. AS epidemiological research in China was summarized by conducting a literature review. A review and statistical analysis of the literature on the epidemiology of AS in mainland China published from May 2005 to May 2019 were performed via a meta-analysis. We calculated the prevalence of AS and analysed differences by sex, region, and population source using STATA12.0 software. Eleven papers including 122,558 subjects from mainland China were included. Over the past 15 years, the total prevalence of AS in mainland China was 0.29% (95% CI 0.22-0.35%), ranging from 0.42% (95% CI 0.31-0.52%) in males to 0.15% (95% CI 0.13-0.18%) in females; the difference in the prevalence of AS by sex was statistically significant (P  0.005). The prevalence of AS in China was 0.29% and continues to increase. Sex differences in its prevalence were identified; the prevalence rate was 2.8 times higher in males than in females. Epidemiologists in China should formulate precise scientific investigations to provide additional authoritative epidemiological data for the prevention and treatment of AS.PURPOSE To evaluate the self-assessed competency of graduating residents (GRs) in Japan upon completion of their residency and to identify the gap between their competency and the competency expected by their program directors (PDs). METHOD A list of 31 essential surgical procedures was compiled according to the consensus of surgical educators from around the country. A survey with this list was sent to all 909 GRs and their 611 PDs in 2016. The GRs rated their competency to perform these procedures and the PDs were asked to evaluate the expected competency of their GRs using the Zwisch Scale. RESULT The response rate was 56.3% for the GRs and 76.8% for the PDs. Fewer than half of the GRs who responded felt confident performing ten (32%) of the surgical procedures evaluated. For most procedures, the GRs' self-reported competency was lower than the expectation reported by their PDs. This gap was more than 10% for 13 of the procedures. CONCLUSION More than half of the GRs in Japan lacked the confidence in their skill to perform one-third of the surgical procedures selected for evaluation in this study. These findings should be used to update the surgical education curriculum in Japan.We present the case of a 17-year-old man, who died after 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and clenbuterol consumption, which he likely took for physical enhancement. Forensic post-mortem examination revealed a yellowish skin colour and nonspecific signs of asphyxia. Analytical confirmation of the intoxication was obtained in blood and urine, with high levels of DNP and clenbuterol. Both of these substances are used by bodybuilders as DNP enhance lipolysis and clenbuterol has anabolic properties, but their toxicity is underestimated. DNP uncouples oxidative phosphorylation, leading to thermogenesis and even relatively small doses can cause fatal hyperthermia. Clenbuterol is a β2 agonist that causes electrolyte disturbances (hypokalemia and hyperglycemia mostly) and death have been described through coronary vasospasm. Given the circumstances in which the body was found and toxicological results, we believe the cause of death to be fatal hyperthermia from DNP intake. These substances are illegal in many countries, but easily bought online.
