Industrial waste from the production of metallic silicon and silicon-iron alloys, which includes silica fumes (microsilica), is subject to numerous applications aiming at its reuse in concrete and polymeric composites. Recycling solves the problem of their storage and adverse environmental impact. Six different formulas of epoxy resins were tested, differing in the type of polymer, the mixing process (sonication or not) and the presence of microsilica. The study showed that microsilica added to the epoxy resin changes its viscosity and free surface energy, and these are the parameters that determine the adhesion of the polymer to the concrete surface. Strength tests and SEM analysis have determined how microsilica molecules can penetrate the structure of polymer macromolecules by filling and forming temporary chemical bonds. Mixing the fillers with the adhesive was achieved by using a sonication process. The analysis of the obtained results showed that, depending on the initial composition of the polymer, the addition of microsilica can change the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the hardened adhesive to varying degrees. In the case of adhesives used in the construction industry to strengthen and glue structural elements, these changes significantly affect the durability of the adhesive joints.Flexible transparent conductive thin films (TCFs) prepared from Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attractive features of low cost, flexibility, and solution-processed, but the usual manufacturing methods could still be hard to be scaled up. In addition, large-scale/large-area fabrication process with industrialized potential is strongly needed. In this paper, the flexible TCFs with high stability are obtained via using screen printing method to print the AgNWs inks on a flexible and transparent substrate. The micro-structure of the AgNWs patterns is investigated by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, the sheet resistance, light transmittance, and film thickness of the AgNWs patterns prepared under different conditions are characterized to explore the influence of different factors on its optical and electrical properties.Non-viral gene delivery using exogenous microRNAs is a potential strategy for fighting cancers with poor prognosis and which lack specific therapies, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Herein we report the synthesis of six nontoxic electrostatic polymeric nanocapsules (P1 to P6) for microRNA delivery in TNBC cells. 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the nanopolyplexes, synthesized with Poly(L-Lysine) and hyaluronic acid (Ha). Studies on the activity of the ternary HA/PLI/miRNA-34 nanopolyplexes towards TNBC cell line MDA-MB-231 were conducted. The nanopolyplexes mediated intracellular restoration of tumor suppressor miR34a was evaluated by using Western blotting to quantify the expression level of the Bcl-2 protein. The results suggest that the P5, with a ratio PLI/Ha of 0.05, was the most promising for the delivery of miR-34a into TNBC cells; the P5 nanocapsules were able to reduce Bcl-2 expression at a protein level, and had an effect in the overall cell viability after 24 h treatment. The clinical assessment of pain is subjective; therefore, variations exist between practitioners in their ability to identify and localize pain. Due to differing interpretations of the signs or severity of pain equine practitioners may assign varying levels of clinical significance and treatment options. There is a critical need to develop better tools to qualify and quantify pain in horses. Palpation is the most common method to detect local tenderness or sensitivity. To quantify this applied pressure, pressure algometry has been used to gradually apply pressure over specified landmarks until an avoidance response is noted, which is defined as the mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT). Numerous studies have used pressure algometry in different applications to measure MNTs in horses. There is an acute need to establish normative values within different body regions and to develop standardized methods of testing MNTs to better guide practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of pain. Acetylcysteine datasheet The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence for the use of pressure algometry in horses. There is good evidence that pressure algometry is a repeatable, semi-objective method that can be used in a wide array of clinical and research applications to assess MNTs in horses.Altered methylation of the FKBP5 gene has been observed in various mental disorders and attributed to the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, the level of FKBP5 methylation has not been investigated in patients with psychotic disorders. Therefore, in this study we aimed to determine the FKBP5 methylation in patients with psychosis and controls, taking into account the effects of ACEs. Participants were 85 patients with psychotic disorders, including first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients and acutely relapsed schizophrenia (SCZ-AR) patients, as well as 56 controls. The level of four CpG sites at the FKBP5 gene was determined in the peripheral blood leukocytes using pyrosequencing. After controlling for potential confounding factors, the level of FKBP5 methylation at one out of four tested CpG sites was significantly lower in FEP patients compared to other groups of participants. Significant main effects of parental antipathy and sexual abuse on the level of FKBP5 methylation were observed at the differentially methylated CpG site. Participants reporting this category of ACEs had significantly lower levels of FKBP5 methylation at this CpG site. Lower levels of FKBP5 methylation were associated with better cognitive performance and higher functional capacity in patients with psychosis. In controls, lower methylation of FKBP5 was related to worse performance of immediate memory and language skills. Our findings suggest that hypomethylation of the FKBP5 appears at early stages of psychosis and might be associated with a history of ACEs as well as less severe clinical manifestation.
