Sectumsempra berasal dari bahasa Latin yaitu, Sectum "sudah terpotong", dan semper, "selalu." Sectumsempra bisa diartikan sebagai "selalu memotong" atau "memutuskan selamanya"
Mantra ini dibuat/diciptakan oleh Severus Snape dan dia sendiri mengatakan bahwa ini adalah sihir Hitam. Ketika mengucapkan kutukan ini, efeknya sama seperti pedang yang tak kelihatan dan dapat memotong korban dari kejauhan. Luka yang diakibatkan sesuai dengan arah tongkat si pengucap kutukan. Jika tongkat ditujukan ke leher seseorang, maka leher orang yang dituju akan terpotong. Sehingga dapat mematikan jika diarahkan atau ditujukan ke bagian tubuh yang vital, dan dengan demikian dapat menimbulkan luka parah. Kutukan ini hanya dapat digunakan terhadap makhluk hidup.
Luka yang ditimbulkan oleh kutukan ini dapat disembuhkan dengan mantra Vulnera Sanentur dan Dittany dapat menghilangkan bekas lukanya.
