ROC curve analysis was carried out to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ADC histogram metrics in predicting LVSI status in EAC.

The minADC and meanADC and 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles of ADC were significantly lower in LVSI-positive EACs compared with those in the LVSI-negative groups for stage I, Ia, and Ib EACs (all p < 0.05). MeanADC ≤ 0.857 × 10

In salamanders, energy reserves can also be stored in the adipose tissues of the tail. Therefore, we evaluated if energy storage in salamanders' tails is related to individual body condition, life cycle and environmental constraints. We calculated a scaled measure of tail width for 345 salamanders belonging to six Mediterranean taxa exhibiting wide phylogenetic, behavioural and ecological variation. We related this measure to the Scaled Mass Index (SMI), a body condition index which reliably predicts body fat. We found significant relationships between the SMI and scaled tail width in the terrestrial Spectacled salamander and Alpine salamanders, independently of sex. At the same time, we found that energy storage in the tail is maximum in Alpine Salamanders, which experience reduced activity periods and restricted access to resources. Conversely, we found a significant effect of sex in Imperial cave salamanders, where females store reserves in the tail to counterbalance resource investment in parental care, and in Corsican Brook Newts, where the reproductive function of males' tails may imply a greater tail width. Finally, in the biphasic Great Crested Newt, tail width was not related to SMI in both sexes.
Chronic pain patients represent the population with the highest use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Current data on the usage, prescription and reasons for using CAM in Germany remain unclear and have not yet been published.

The aim of this study was to evaluate details regarding interest and use as well as reasons for using CAM in chronic pain patients.

In all, 60 of 64consecutive patients referred to the multimodal pain therapy program in aspecialized day hospital participated in the study. In addition to the German Pain Questionnaire, patients answered aself-developed questionnaire on CAM use. CAM was defined according to the guidelines of the NCCIH (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

The study showed that 96.7% of patients were interested in CAM and all 60participants had used CAM to influence pain (3-26 different CAM modalities, median12). The most frequently used were massage (95%), acupuncture (73%), nutriceuticals and vitamin preparations (72% each). The success of the therapies was predominantly evaluated as short-lasting. CAM was often prescribed by aspecialist (61.7%) or family doctor (60%). For most patients, the greatest motivation for using CAM was the desire to become active themselves (76.7%). Greater impairment due to pain was associated with increased use of biological CAM methods, while higher pain intensity was associated with decreased use of biological and alternative CAM methods.

The high use of CAM in chronic pain patients highlights the need for physicians to have adequate medical knowledge about each CAM modality and to communicate competently with the patients about them.

The goals of the treatment and the methods vary greatly for this condition, because they are subject to the changing symptomatology. In some cases there are overlapping and synergistic treatment strategies with physiotherapy. For a positive treatment result it is important to implement occupational therapy early on and continuously during the course of the disease. This allows treatment methods, such as mental exercises or sensory exercises to improve the processing of pain-triggering perceptual stimuli at an early stage. Alongside the classical movement exercises and advice on aids, special treatment methods, such as mirror therapy, neurocognitive rehabilitation according to Perfetti or the graded exposure concept can also be beneficial for CRPS patients.
