The effects of feed deprivation were evaluated for 1 week and 2 weeks in Lutjanus guttatus juveniles. A significant reduction in body mass was observed in both feed deprivation schemes, as well as in hepatosomatic, viscerosomatic and mesenteric fat indexes. The composition of fasted fish was characterized by a decrease in lipid content; the liver displayed an intense reduction of lipid reserves in both fasted groups, and increased expression of the lysosomal acid lipase. 1 week after re-feeding, both experimental groups showed an increase in specific growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion ratio. A recovery in hepatic lipid reserves was observed, and the expression of the lysosomal acid lipase decreased, although lipid content in both groups was still significantly lower than in control groups. Hepatic expression of the growth hormone receptor decreased after fasting, and remained low even after the fish were fed, whereas the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 and 2 increased after fasting and decreased in both groups when fish were fed again. Altogether, these results showed a partial compensatory growth response in L. guttatus juveniles after fasting, with enhanced growth rates and improved feed efficiency. Fish used stored lipid reserves as the main energy source, and the expression of growth-related and lipid mobilization marker genes in the liver showed similar patterns in both fasting schemes. Based on the results, we suggest as much as 1-week fasting intervals during grow-out programmes to reduce visceral fat and increase growth rate in this species.We consider the effects of correlations between the in- and out-degrees of individual neurons on the dynamics of a network of neurons. By using theta neurons, we can derive a set of coupled differential equations for the expected dynamics of neurons with the same in-degree. A Gaussian copula is used to introduce correlations between a neuron's in- and out-degree, and numerical bifurcation analysis is used determine the effects of these correlations on the network's dynamics. For excitatory coupling, we find that inducing positive correlations has a similar effect to increasing the coupling strength between neurons, while for inhibitory coupling it has the opposite effect. The flux toward monolignol biosynthesis through the phenylpropanoid pathway is controlled by specific genes from at least ten families. Lignin polymer is one of the major components of the plant cell wall and is mainly responsible for recalcitrance to saccharification in ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. Here, we identified and characterized sugarcane candidate genes from the general phenylpropanoid and monolignol-specific metabolism through a search of the sugarcane EST databases, phylogenetic analysis, a search for conserved amino acid residues important for enzymatic function, and analysis of expression patterns during culm development in two lignin-contrasting genotypes. Of these genes, 15 were cloned and, when available, their loci were identified using the recently released sugarcane genomes from Saccharum hybrid R570 and Saccharum spontaneum cultivars. Our analysis points out that ShPAL1, ShPAL2, ShC4H4, Sh4CL1, ShHCT1, ShC3H1, ShC3H2, ShCCoAOMT1, ShCOMT1, ShF5H1, ShCCR1, ShCAD2, and ShCAD7 are strong candidates to be bona fide lignin biosynthesis genes. Furthermore, a mutation in the histone deacetylase gene, clr6, also suppresses the growth defect of cds1Δ cells in response to HU indicating a suppressive role of clr6-1 mutation in cds1 deletion background upon HU treatment. Interestingly, in response to HU, phosphorylation of Chk1 kinase and the number of Rad52YFP foci was reduced in cds1Δ clr6-1 double mutant as compared to cds1Δ single mutant indicating a decrease in the level of DNA damage in response to HU. Accordingly, the single-cell gel electrophoresis assay revealed a drastic reduction in the tail length of cds1Δ clr6-1 double mutant as compared to cds1Δ cells in the presence of HU suggesting the suppression of chromosomal defects in the double mutant. Taken together, we proposed that there could be transient suppression of fork collapse in cds1Δ clr6-1 double mutant upon HU treatment due to the delay in mitotic progression that leads to the facilitation of cell growth.BACKGROUND Coronal alignment of the tibial component determines functional outcome and survival in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Innovative techniques for tibial instrumentation have been developed to improve accuracy and reduce the rate of outliers. METHODS In a prospective study, 300 patients were allocated to four different groups using a randomization process (two innovative and two conventional) techniques of tibial instrumentation (conventional extramedullary, intramedullary; innovative navigation and patient-specific instrumentation (PSI); n = 75 for each group). The aims were to reconstruct the medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) to 90° and the mechanical tibio-femoral axis (mTFA) to 0°. Both angles were evaluated and compared between all groups three months after the surgery. Patients who presented with a postoperative mTFA > 3° were classified as outliers. RESULTS The navigation and intramedullary technique both demonstrated that they were significantly more precise in reconstructing a neutral mTFA and MPTA compared to the other two techniques.
