No positive correlation was found between any of these markers and disease severity according to Hurley staging system. However, MCV (Mean corpuscular volume), RDW (Red cell distribution width), and CRP showed a significant positive correlation with disease severity. Among these markers, only MHR was positively correlated with disease duration. Our study shows that CRP still maintains its value for HS patients compared to new inflammation markers. Unlike the studies in other inflammatory diseases, no significant relationship was found with most of these inflammatory parameters. MHR may be more useful in patients with HS as an indicator of inflammation compared to other parameters.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of mortality among non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. The aim was to explore the level of knowledge and clinical management of cardiovascular risk (CVR) in NAFLD patients by Digestive Disease specialists.
An anonymous web-based survey was designed with 44 close-ended questions, divided into five sections, that were based on current guidelines on CVD prevention. Between November 2019 and January 2020, Digestive Disease specialists from Spanish hospitals were invited to participate in this survey via email and Twitter. Student's t, chi-square and Fishers' exact tests, and logistic regression were used for data analysis.
208 clinicians completed the survey. Most respondents (83.2%) believe that NAFLD is an independent risk factor for CVD, especially in the presence of NASH and fibrosis. Personal history of CVDs and cardiovascular risk-related comorbidities are collected by more than 75% of respondents. However, less than 17% perform an elementary physical examination to address the CVR, except weight which is evaluated by 69.8%. Over 54% of respondents do not perform or request any supplementary tests for CVR assessment, and only 10.2% use specific calculators. Furthermore, 54.3% spend less than 5minutes giving lifestyle advice, and more than 52% do not start drug treatment after a recent diagnosis of any cardiovascular comorbidity. Only 25.6% have a multidisciplinary Unit for metabolic comorbidities in their hospitals, although 89% of the respondents would support the implementation of this Unit.
Cardiovascular risk management in daily clinical practice by Digestive Disease specialists in Spain remains suboptimal.
Cardiovascular risk management in daily clinical practice by Digestive Disease specialists in Spain remains suboptimal.Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection because of their high-risk sexual behaviours. In this study, a meta-analytic approach was used to systematically analyse the literature to elucidate the prevalence and genotype distribution of anal, penile, oral and urethral HPV infection among MSM in the world. To carry out this systematic review, five electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant studies published from January 2012 to November 2019, and pertinent data were collected from the eligible articles. The pooled HPV prevalence was calculated for each anatomical region using a random-effect model weighted by the inverse variance method. The meta-analysis was performed using the "Metaprop" function in the R package Meta. The overall pooled prevalence of anal, penile, oral and urethral HPV infection among MSM were 78.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] 75.6%-81.0%), 36.2% (95% CI 29.1%-44.0%), 17.3% (95% CI 13.6%-21.7%) and 15.4% (95% CI 7.8%-27.9%), respectively. Stratified analyses showed that the prevalences of HPV were significantly higher in HIV-positive than HIV-negative MSM. The most frequent HPV high-risk type detected in the anus, penis and oral cavity was HPV-16 (19.9%, 4.9% and 3.1%, respectively). HPV infection is rising in MSM because of high-risk sexual behaviours, suggesting an increased future risk of developing HPV-related diseases and malignancies in this population.Since the onset of the present pandemic, effect of the novel corona virus on other infectious conditions continues to be investigated. Although the immunological responses to SARS-Cov-2 infection have been elaborated extensively, they fail to explain, variations in its clinical manifestations and its interaction with other diseases. Hansen's disease is known to present as a complex immunological response to the lepra bacilli, resulting in its varied spectral manifestations. An interaction between these two infectious agents, hence, may affect Hansen's disease. We came across six cases of Hansen's disease who developed COVID19 co-infection. This series presents their clinical course and outcome, during the period of co-infection. All cases were followed up for a minimum eight-week period thereafter. In all these cases the active phase of coronavirus infection had no effect on Hansen's disease and those on prednisolone for their lepra reaction had a more favorable outcome, with two cases manifesting exacerbation of their lepra reactions in the follow period.
The survival of an avulsed tooth highly depends on the emergency management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of ankylosis for avulsed human teeth stored in saliva preceded by various dry storage conditions prior to replantation.
Data include 74 patients (54 male and 20 female) with 89 avulsed and replanted teeth (16 immature teeth, 73 mature teeth). Patient ages ranged from 6 to 36years (median 13.0years). All teeth were stored in saliva before replantation. selleck chemicals Treatment and follow-up were performed according to a standardized procedure. Follow-up periods ranged from 7months to 20years (mean 5.3years). The risk of ankylosis over time was estimated by the Aalen-Johansen method in relation to the length of dry storage and the stage of root development. The effect of risk factors (root development and length of dry time) on the risk of ankylosis was analysed by Cox regression analysis.
For mature teeth, dry storage for 5min or less before saliva storage resulted in a 47.4% (95% confidence interplace of the accident.
