In their 1987 Nature publication, "Mitochondrial DNA and Human Evolution," Rebecca Cann, Mark Stoneking, and Allan C. In this paper, I show that mtEve was not a single, successful, or purely scientific discovery. Instead, she was produced many times and in many ways, each of which informed the next. Importantly, though Wilson and colleagues heralded mitochondrial DNA as a source of certainty, objectivity, and consensus for evolutionary inference, their productions of Mitochondrial Eve depended as much on popular assumptions about the certainty of maternal inheritance as they did on new molecular and computational tools. This recognition lets us reevaluate the complex consequences of these productions, which, like mtEve herself, could not be confined to a purely social, material, or scientific dimension.
Obesity and its relationship with higher rate of complications in orthopedic surgeries have been reported. There is no evidence of the relation between obesity and percutaneous foot surgery. Our objective was to evaluate obesity as a risk factor for complications and reoperations in percutaneous surgery of the hallux valgus.

A total 532 feet were retrospectively reviewed in which a percutaneous hallux valgus correction was performed. Complications and surgical reoperations were recorded. Patients were divided into 2 groups BMI less and greater than 30kg/m

There were no differences in the rate of complications or reoperations. The total complication rate was 8%. Obesity as an isolated risk factor, presented aOR=1.14 (95%CI 0.54-2.4, p=.714). The overall rate of reoperations was 9%. Obesity presented an aOR=0.64 (95%CI 0.27-1.49, p=.31).

Obesity has not been associated with a higher rate of complications and reoperations in percutaneous hallux valgus surgery. It is a safe procedure and BMI should not influence in the prognosis.

Approximately 3.6 million people in the UK identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). Fear of discrimination and lack of sexual orientation and gender identity recording suggests LGBT people are invisible to health services. A systematic review was conducted to critically analyse primary research investigating psychosocial support needs for LGBT cancer patients during and after treatment.

Twenty studies were included in the review; of which ten were qualitative, seven quantitative and three mixed methods. The main themes highlighted include health care professional knowledge and education, negative impact on mental health, lack of inclusive support groups, prevalence of discrimination within healthcare services and the disclosure or non-disclosure of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The review highlights how healthcare providers are failing LGBT cancer patients in psychosocial support resulting in unmet needs. Recommendations have been made to ensure an LGBT inclusive environment within cancer services, as well as the need to develop support services for LGBT cancer patients.

Training should be provided for HCP staff in LGBT health and awareness. Sexual orientation and gender identity recording and monitoring is important to ensure LGBT people are not 'invisible' in oncology, radiotherapy and in future research. LGBT cancer support groups and resources should be created, as the review evidence suggests LGBT patients are actively looking for these resources.

Curcumin and quercetin are two natural plant-derived bioactive molecules shown to promote wound healing in injured tissues. In this study, we investigated the in vitro susceptibility of several Aspergillus and Candida isolates to curcumin and quercetin encapsulated in nanovesicles with and without hyaluronan and elucidated the efficacy of these nanovesicles as topical drug delivery systems. Antifungal susceptibility testing performed according to the CLSI guidelines indicated that curcumin-quercetin co-encapsulated in nanovesicles without hyaluronan (CUR-QUE-NV-WH) had stronger activity against Candida isolates than fluconazole. Furthermore, CUR-QUE-NV-WH showed efficacy against fluconazole-resistant Candida isolates as evidenced by MICs at least two times lower than those of fluconazole. Examination of skin permeation profiles using an in vitro Franz diffusion cell system revealed that curcumin and quercetin delivered by nanovesicles were released and accumulated in the skin; however, only quercetin could penetrate through the skin layers.
