Because laboratory measures of fitness effects have limited sensitivities and relative frequencies of different mutations in mutagenesis studies may not match those in nature, we here revisit this issue using comparative genomics. We extend the standard codon model of sequence evolution by adding the parameter η that quantifies the ratio of the fixation probability of transitional nonsynonymous mutations to that of transversional nonsynonymous mutations. We then estimate η from the concatenated alignment of all protein-coding DNA sequences of two closely related genomes. Surprisingly, η ranges from 0.13 to 2.0 across 90 species pairs sampled from the tree of life, with 51 incidences of η 1 that are statistically significant. Hence, whether nonsynonymous transversions are overall more deleterious than nonsynonymous transitions is species-dependent. Because the corresponding groups of amino acid replacements differ between nonsynonymous transitions and transversions, η is influenced by the relative exchangeabilities of amino acid pairs. Indeed, an extensive search reveals that the large variation in η is primarily explainable by the recently reported among-species disparity in amino acid exchangeabilities. These findings demonstrate that genome-wide nucleotide substitution patterns in coding sequences have species-specific features and are more variable among evolutionary lineages than are currently thought.The human visual system is constantly processing multiple and often conflicting sensory cues to make perceptual decisions. Given the nonlinear nature of emotion recognition, this often leads to different percepts of the same physical facial expression. Here, we aimed to explore temporal context-related mechanisms underlying perceptual hysteresis during emotion recognition. We hypothesized that dependence on recent perceptual experience might reveal important clues about the role of short-term memory on the perception of emotional stimuli. Behavioral data were acquired using reality-based, changing emotion expressions morphed from a source to a target emotion with different valences, always passing through a neutral expression. Participants identified the onset and offset of what they perceived as the neutral expression interval. Our results showed that current perception of emotional expression is affected by recent temporal context, thus revealing perceptual hysteresis. Is the bias in heading estimation produced by the local disturbance of the flow field or by the movement of the walker through the scene? We present a novel flow field stimulus in which the local flow disturbance and the movement of the walker can be pitted against each other. Each frame of this stimulus consists of a structureless random dot distribution. Across frames, the body shape of a walker is molded by presenting different flow field dynamics within and outside the body shape. In different experimental conditions, the flow within the body shape can be congruent with the walker's movement, incongruent with it, or congruent with the background flow. We show that heading inaccuracy results from the local flow disturbance rather than the movement through the scene. Moreover, we show that the local disturbances of the optic flow can be used to segment the walker and support biological motion perception to some degree. The dichotomous result that the walker can be segmented from the scene but that heading perception is nonetheless influenced by the flow produced by the walker confirms separate visual pathways for heading estimation, object segmentation, and biological motion perception.
