What can be said about the case of conventional hazardous waste (CHW) from households? What technical and legal aspects are similar to or different from those of the NW domain? How does the public perceive CHW and its handling? We address these (so far) open questions in this study that comprises multiple methodological approaches. We combine a technical and system assessment with a societal (perception) assessment, based on a representative survey (N = 3082) among the German-speaking population of Switzerland. We draw some conclusions for a possible way forward in hazardous waste policy and governance. We find a remarkable disparity between technical analysis and public perception. The community should discuss whether the current NW management is forward-looking and may serve as a model for CHW. For CHW, the multiplicity of agents and the heterogeneity of substances may make the situation too complex, non-transparent, and thus less salient in the public perception. Paradoxically, the ubiquity of conventional waste, traditional community landfills, and everyday handling of some waste may make it appear less alarming than NW.Some phytoplankton species were shown to produce teratogenic retinoids. This study assessed the variability in the extracellular production of compounds with retinoid-like activity for 50 independent cultivations of wide spectra of species including 12 cyanobacteria (15 strains) and 4 algae of different orders. Extracellular retinoid-like activity was detected for repeated cultivations of six cyanobacteria. The results were consistent for some species including Microcystis aeruginosa and Aphanizomenon gracile. The detected retinoid-like activities ranged from below the limit of quantification of 16 ng/L to over 6 µg all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) equivalent/L. Nontargeted virtual fractionation together with suspect screening approach enabled to identify some retinoid-like compounds in exudates, including ATRA, 9/13-cis retinoic acid, all-trans 5,6-epoxy retinoic acid, 4keto-ATRA, 4keto-retinal, 4hydroxy-ATRA, and retinal. Most of them were for the first time repeatedly detected in exudates of all studied algae (at ng/L levels) and cyanobacteria. Their relative potencies ranged from 0.018 (retinal) to 1 compared to ATRA. They accounted for less than 0.1-50% of total detected retinoid-like activity. The high detected activities and concentrations of retinoids in some samples and their direct accessibility from exudates document potential risk of developmental toxicity for organisms in proximity of massive water blooms.Soil arsenic (As) contamination limits global agricultural productivity. Anthropogenic emissions are causing atmospheric CO2 levels to rise. Elevated CO2 (eCO2) boosts plant growth both under optimal and suboptimal growth conditions. However, the crop-specific interaction between eCO2 and soil arsenic exposure has not been investigated at the whole plant, physiological and biochemical level. Here, we tested the effects of eCO2 (620 ppm) and soil As exposure (mild and severe treatments, 25 and 100 mg As/Kg soil) on growth, photosynthesis and redox homeostasis in barley (C3) and maize (C4). Compared to maize, barley was more susceptible to soil As exposure at ambient CO2 levels. Barley plants accumulated more As, particularly in roots. As accumulation inhibited plant growth and induced oxidative damage in a species-specific manner. As-exposed barley experienced severe oxidative stress as illustrated by high H2O2 and protein oxidation levels. Interestingly, eCO2 differentially mitigated As-induced stress in barley and maize. In barley, eCO2 exposure reduced photorespiration, H2O2 production, and lipid/protein oxidation. In maize eCO2 exposure led to an upregulation of the ascorbate-glutathione (ASC/GSH)-mediated antioxidative defense system. Combined, this work highlights how ambient and future eCO2 levels differentially affect the growth, physiology and biochemistry of barley and maize crops exposed to soil As pollution.In response to the inherent restriction of low Fe(II) regeneration in the Fenton process, this study demonstrated a mutual-promoting configuration, where oxygen functionalized g-C3N4 (OCN) was applied in Fe(III)/H2O2 system to utilize mild natural solar light (SL) for persistent Fe(II) generation. The constructed OCN/Fe(III)/H2O2/SL system exhibited strong adaptability to various pollutants, and it well outperformed the g-C3N4 (GCN) modified system and the traditional Fenton system in pollutants degradation efficiency. Compared with GCN, OCN could significantly promote the Fe(II) generation under solar light (SL), leading to more efficient H2O2 activation. The characterization analyses revealed the larger surface area and enhanced charge separation of OCN, which were considered to take main responsibility for its enhanced photoactivity. The complexation of Fe(III) with the carboxyl groups of OCN also benefited the Fe(II) generation. ·OH was detected as the dominant radical responsible for metronidazole (MNZ) degradation, and its production in the OCN modified system was about twice that in the GCN modified system and the Fenton system.
