Systemic review (SR) and meta-analysis (MA) of interventional studies are considered as the highest level of evidence for clinical decision making. Therefore, we systematically summarized all high-quality evidence on the usage of coconut oil for health-related benefits from SRs and MA.

PubMed®, Web of science®, SciVerse Scopus®, and EMBASE® databases were systematically searched to select SRs and SRs with MA of interventional studies reporting health-related clinical outcomes of coconut oil. Similar studies were grouped based on their respective clinical areas. A methodological quality appraisal was conducted for all included SRs and SRs with MA using the Critical Appraisal Checklist for Systematic Reviews.

A total of seven papers were selected for inclusion in this review, consisting of three MA and one SR on cardio-metabolic health, one SR on oral health, and one SR and one MA each on skin health. Coconut oil significantly increases serum total cholesterol, low-density- and high-density- lipoprotein cholesterol levels compared to poly- and mono-unsaturated oils. Limited studies showed that topical use of coconut oil helps in the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis and oil pulling for the prevention of dental caries. All four studies on cardiometabolic health and the SR on oral health had a high score in the quality assessment, SR with MA on skin health fulfilled high-quality scoring whereas the SR on the same topic had a low-quality scoring.

In summary, consistent and strong evidence shows that coconut oil has an adverse effect on the lipids parameters associated with cardio-metabolic health, with limited studies to conclude the effects of atopic dermatitis and oil pulling.

Two pre-concentration methods (partial evaporation and ion-exchange resins) were optimized for accuracy, precision, detection limits, costs, preparation, and measurements times. A new sampling method for 222Rn was designed and optimized to directly sample water from the tap, reducing and minimizing losses of radon during the sampling. A total number of 85 water samples were collected between 2017 and 2019 in collaboration with two drinking water suppliers in a wide area (~2000 km2) of the Veneto region, northeast Italy. These are the first results of radionuclides activity concentration in drinking water concerning a large extension in the foothill Veneto region. Finally, this study provides a first attempt of determining the spatial distribution and seasonal variations of radon activity concentration in drinking water in the study area.Sorption hypotheses and models are required for the prediction of 137Cs migration in soils contaminated after nuclear reactor accidents and nuclear weapons tests. In assessment models, the Kd (distribution coefficient) hypothesis for sorption, which assumes that sorption is instantaneous, linear and reversible, has often been coupled with the convection-diffusion equation (CDE) to model 137Cs migration. However, it fails to describe 137Cs migration velocities which often decrease with time. Alternative equilibrium-kinetic (EK) hypotheses of 137Cs sorption/desorption have been suggested by laboratory experiments but have not been fully validated in field conditions. This work addressed the influence and magnitude of non-equilibrium 137Cs sorption in field conditions by reinterpreting, with an inverse approach, series of 137Cs profiles measured in mineral soils of forest plots located in Fukushima Prefecture (2013-2018). Fitted sorption parameters suggest a fast sorption kinetic (half-time of 1-7 h) and a pseudo-irreversible desorption rate (half-time of 3.2 × 100-3.4 × 106 years), whereas equilibrium sorption (4.0 × 10-3 L kg-1 on average) only affects a negligible portion of 137Cs inventory. Predictive modeling of 137Cs profiles in soil suggests a strong persistence of the surface 137Cs contamination by 2030, with exponential profiles consistent with those reported after the Chernobyl accident. This study demonstrates that hypotheses and parameters of 137Cs sorption can be partially inferred from in situ measurements. However, further experiments in controlled conditions are required to better estimate the sorption parameters and to identify the processes behind non-equilibrium sorption.Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are predominantly associated with tumor growth. Colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) acts as a key regulator of TAM survival and differentiation and is a molecular target for cancer therapies. Herein, novel CSF1R inhibitors were identified through a replacement strategy for the hinge-binding moiety. The introduction of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine (49) or pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine (50) as hinge binders led to 87% and 82% inhibition at 10 nM for CSF1R in the enzymatic assay, with IC50 values of 25 nM and 27 nM in MNFS60 cells, respectively. These derivatives significantly inhibited CSF1R phosphorylation in cells. Our approach could be utilized as a strategy to discover novel kinase inhibitors.
