Based on the inclusion criteria, the updated quality indicator 'textbook outcome for esophageal cancer surgery' should consist of tumor-negative resection margins, ≥20 lymph nodes retrieved and examined, no intraoperative complication, no complications Clavien-Dindo ≥III, no ICU/MCU readmission, no readmission related to the surgical procedure, no anastomotic leakage, no hospital stay ≥14 days, and no in-hospital mortality. This study resulted in an international consensus-based update of a quality measure, textbook outcome for esophageal cancer surgery. This updated textbook outcome should be implemented in quality assurance programs for centers performing esophageal cancer surgery, and could standardize quality measures used internationally.
oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) and hip fracture are common problems in older patients, both associated with important complications.

the aim of this study was to measure the prevalence and identify the main risk factors of dysphagia in older patients with hip fracture.

a prospective study in an orthogeriatric unit of a university hospital over 10months.

a total of 320 patients (mean age 86.2years, 73.4% women) were assessed for dysphagia within 72hours post-surgery using the Volume-Viscosity Swallow Test. Geriatric assessment, hip fracture management and complications were examined to determine their relationship with the presence of OD.

Yet, the ecological impacts of facultative scavenging by large predators, or their "scavenging effects", still receive relatively little attention in comparison to their predation effects. To address this knowledge gap, we comprehensively examine the roles played by, and impacts of, facultative scavengers, with a focus on large canids the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), dhole (Cuon alpinus), dingo (Canis dingo), Ethiopian wolf (C. simensis), gray wolf (C. lupus), maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), and red wolf (C. rufus). Specifically, after defining facultative scavenging as use or usurpation of a carcass that a consumer has not killed, we (i) provide a conceptual overview of the community interactions around carcasses that can be initiated by facultative scavengers, (ii) review the extent of scavenging by and the evidence for scavenging effects of large canids, (iii) discuss external factors that may diminish or enhance the effects of large canids as scavengers, and (iv) identify aspects of this phenomenon that require additional research attention as a guide for future work.
Sepsis is one of the most frequent reasons for acute intensive care unit (ICU) admission of very old patients and mortality rates are high. However, the impact of pre-existing physical and cognitive function on long-term outcome of ICU patients ≥ 80years old (very old intensive care patients (VIPs)) with sepsis is unclear.

To investigate both the short- and long-term mortality of VIPs admitted with sepsis and assess the relation of mortality with pre-existing physical and cognitive function.

Prospective cohort study.

241 ICUs from 22 European countries in a six-month period between May 2018 and May 2019.

Acutely admitted ICU patients aged ≥80years with sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score ≥ 2.

Sepsis was defined according to the sepsis 3.0 criteria. Patients with sepsis as an admission diagnosis were compared with other acutely admitted patients. In addition to patients' characteristics, disease severity, information about comorbidity and polypharmacy and pre-existing physical and cognitive function were collected.

Out of 3,596 acutely admitted VIPs with SOFA score ≥ 2, a group of 532 patients with sepsis were compared to other admissions. Predictors for 6-month mortality were age (per 5years) Hazard ratio (HR, 1.16 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.09-1.25, P < 0.0001), SOFA (per one-point) HR, 1.16 (95% CI, 1.14-1.17, P < 0.0001) and frailty (CFS > 4) HR, 1.34 (95% CI, 1.18-1.51, P < 0.0001).

It is associated with significant increases in morbidity in the form of stroke and heart failure, and a doubling in all-cause mortality. The pathophysiology of AF is incompletely understood, and this has contributed to a lack of effective treatments and disease-modifying therapies. An important cellular process that may explain how risk factors give rise to AF includes post-translational modification (PTM) of proteins. As the most commonly occurring PTM, protein phosphorylation is especially relevant. Although many methods exist for studying protein phosphorylation, a common and highly resolute technique is mass spectrometry (MS). This review will discuss recent evidence surrounding the role of protein phosphorylation in the pathogenesis of AF. MS-based technology to study phosphorylation and uses of MS in other areas of medicine such as oncology will also be presented. Based on these data, future goals and experiments will be outlined that utilize MS technology to better understand the role of phosphorylation in AF and elucidate its role in AF pathophysiology. This may ultimately allow for the development of more effective AF therapies.
