An online questionnaire was instrumental in identifying the participants' profiles, aiming to analyze their COVID-19-related behaviors and experiences.
Examining a group of 131 women, their average age was 28 years, with a highest age of 53 years. At the time of the interview, a significant percentage (748%; n=98) of the population consisted of pregnant individuals, with the remaining participants experiencing the postpartum period. In the pandemic, 465% (n=61) of the participants observed no shifts in their prenatal care. In the same vein, 9250% (n = 111) declared no intention of altering their breastfeeding arrangements for their babies. Based on participant reports, 7786% felt scared or overwhelmed by the ongoing pandemic, and 97% supported COVID testing as a screening measure among all expectant mothers.
Our study's findings showcase the specific traits of Hispanic women who are pregnant and live in Puerto Rico. The majority of individuals indicated adherence to the necessary health services, specifically in relation to their prenatal care, without any noteworthy adjustments or alterations.
The characteristics of pregnant Hispanic females in Puerto Rico are delineated in our research findings. The majority of those surveyed reported satisfactory engagement with health services, presenting only minimal changes, if any, in their prenatal care routines.
Because of their geographical placement, the French West Indies (FWI) and the Dominican Republic (DR) are susceptible to the spread of infectious diseases. Bibliometric analysis served to illustrate trends in scientific publications for FWI and DR, delineate international partnerships at each location, and highlight prospects for inter-site collaboration.
Using publications from the Web of Science and PubMed databases between 1990 and 2019, a bibliometric analysis was carried out. Bibliometric indicators, encompassing quantitative, performance-based, and organization-specific measures, were utilized.
The indicated period saw the publication of 3599 articles, a significant portion of which (2552) had at least one author linked to the FWI, while another substantial number (1047) were connected to the DR. Journals within the top quartile of the Journal Citation Record, signifying the highest publication quality in each respective category, were most frequently cited, 38% being from the FWI and 5032% from the DR. fisogatinib inhibitor In the realm of FWI publications, French authors from mainland France were the leading collaborators, contributing 1754 publications (35% of the total). For publications originating in the Dominican Republic, US authors were the most prolific collaborators (898, representing 43% of the total). The category of infectious diseases held the most prominent position, with the emergence of two clusters: arbovirus infections (FWI) and HIV infections (DR).
A bibliometric examination of the FWI and DR's 30 years of scientific publications is a key component of this pioneering study. Both platforms showcased articles concerning infectious diseases, implying a robust basis for future collaborative endeavors.
This pioneering study, a bibliometric analysis of the FWI and DR's 30-year scientific production, is among the first of its kind. Articles on infectious diseases appeared on both sites, suggesting a strong potential for future cooperative projects in this field.
To evaluate the contraceptive practices of sexually active Hispanic women residing in Puerto Rico.
Throughout the period extending from October 2016 to February 2018, 518 patients completed a self-administered questionnaire. To qualify, participants had to be over 21 years of age and have been treated at either San Juan City Hospital or University District Hospital. A 2-sample t-test and descriptive statistical methods were utilized in the analysis of the results, with a p-value less than .05 considered statistically significant.
Fifty-one-eight individuals successfully completed the survey questionnaire. Among 518 subjects, 413 (80%) reported using at least one type of contraception; 252 (49%) used oral contraceptives, 305 (59%) used male condoms, 92 (34%) used the rhythm method, 83 (31%) underwent female sterilization, 98 (19%) employed the withdrawal method, 92 (18%) used implants, 67 (13%) received progesterone injections, 41 (8%) utilized female condoms, 13 (5%) had partners who had male sterilization, 20 (4%) used the transdermal patch, 16 (3%) employed a vaginal ring, and 26 (5%) used an intrauterine device.
Within a group of 518 women, 242% chose LARC, an increase in their adoption of this particular method; this increased utilization rate is likely a consequence of its free and easily accessible availability. Public health initiatives should be structured to increase awareness about sexual health, educate individuals about the efficacy of contraceptive methods and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, and reduce barriers to obtaining contraceptives to decrease instances of unplanned pregnancies within this demographic.
Within a cohort of 518 women, a substantial 242 percent employed LARC; this noticeable increase in the group's use is potentially linked to LARC's readily accessible and free availability. To bolster public health, interventions must be designed to enhance knowledge of sexual health, instruct on the efficacy of various contraceptive methods and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, and diminish impediments to accessing contraception, ultimately decreasing the incidence of unintended pregnancies within this demographic.
In the field of treating severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a practice where different perspectives co-exist, devoid of a unified, definitive approach. Functional outcomes, six months following a sTBI admission, were evaluated in pediatric patients, differentiating between those with and without a definitive diagnosis (DC), and comparing those who received early and late DCs.
This observational case-control study of pediatric patients admitted to hospitals in Puerto Rico (June 2016-October 2018) for sTBI examined patients admitted within 24 hours of injury exhibiting a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 8 or lower. Post-traumatic outcomes at six months were evaluated using the Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended Pediatric (GOS-E Peds).
In this study, twenty participants were included; fifteen underwent DC therapy and five patients formed the control group. A comparative analysis revealed no distinctions in sex, age, GCS score, Pediatric Risk of Mortality score, or Pediatric Trauma Score. The initial computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a higher incidence of significant cerebral herniation in the DC group, compared to the control group, (DC 73%; control 0%; P = .005). No disparities were detected in intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure, mean arterial pressure, PaCO2 levels, or temperature. The DC group's hospital stay was significantly longer than the control group's (DC 41 days; control 17 days; P = .0005). Early procedures in DC patients consistently yielded favorable outcomes and ensured survival.
Evaluated six months post-trauma, this study found that earlier DC implementation correlated with both increased survival and enhanced functionality.
Subsequent to 6 months of post-traumatic observation, this study indicated that early DC contributed to higher survival rates and improved functional outcomes.
This article proposes a temporal cost assessment methodology for neurological diseases, utilizing an engineering-economics model. Developing a planning tool that accurately captured the specifics of this affliction, both globally and in Puerto Rico, was the target.
A proposed model segment's a given neurological disease into three progressive stages of deterioration, collecting and adapting the respective associated costs in response to their changing value over time. Hence, the aggregate cost of the ailment is evaluated, and its equivalent in today's money is expressed. In order to verify the model, data from Puerto Rico concerning Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's diseases was scrutinized.
This method, showcased here, considered Parkinson's disease affecting individuals in Puerto Rico. Based on our model's calculations, a patient in the medium stage faces an annual cost of $64,915. This figure outstrips the estimations of other authors, who place the value between $41689 and $51600 for the United States. Our work's unique contribution is in the proposed model's inclusion of the individual's opportunity cost calculation for lost productive years, which is partially responsible for this difference.
Neurological diseases typically manifest in a sequence of progressive deterioration necessitating considerable financial investment. This model, designed with commonalities in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases, is illustrated using PR costs. It includes, as an added benefit, a consideration of the opportunity cost of lost productivity, a factor that makes it more representative of real-world situations.
Neurological diseases are characterized by progressive deterioration that often requires a significant financial investment. The model described here incorporates commonalities in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases, which are demonstrated with costs from PR. As an added benefit, it enables the calculation of the opportunity cost of lost productivity, which significantly increases its realism.
Sparse Hispanic research has addressed the issue of small and diminutive polyps and their possibility of concealing advanced histological features (AH). We sought to ascertain the frequency of AH among a cohort of Hispanics.
Retrospective analysis of patient medical records was undertaken to examine individuals who underwent colonoscopies within the timeframe of 2005 to 2010. Data collection included not only demographics and indications but also a history of colon cancer and/or polyps (personal and family), as well as polyp histology. AH was the assigned classification for polyps exhibiting high-grade dysplasia, a prominent villous component, adenocarcinoma, or serrated characteristics.
