Humans are able to generate target-directed visuomotor responses in less than 100 ms after stimulus onset. These "express" responses have been termed stimulus-locked responses (SLRs) and are proposed to be modulated by visuomotor transformations performed subcortically via the superior colliculus. Unfortunately, these responses have proven difficult to detect consistently across individuals. The recent report of an effective paradigm for generating SLRs in 100% of participants appears to change this. The task required the interception of a target moving at a constant velocity that emerged from behind a barrier. Here, we aimed to reproduce the efficacy of this paradigm for eliciting SLRs and to test the hypothesis that its effectiveness derives from the predictability of target onset time as opposed to target motion per se. In one experiment, we recorded surface electromyogram (EMG) from shoulder muscles as participants made reaches to intercept temporally predictable or unpredictable targets. Consistent with rget timing, regardless of its kinematic attributes. We propose that the superior colliculus can be primed to generate express stimulus-driven motor responses via cortical top-down projection. Background Children with disabilities are more likely to experience violence or injury at school and at home, but there is little evidence from Central Asia. Objective To describe the prevalence of disability and associations with peer violence perpetration and victimization, depression, corporal punishment, school performance and school attendance, among middle school children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Method This is a secondary analysis of data gathered in the course of evaluations of interventions to prevent peer violence conducted in Pakistan and Afghanistan as part of the 'What Works to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme'. In Pakistan, the research was conducted in 40 schools, and disability was assessed at midline in 1516 interviews with Grade 7s. In Afghanistan, the data were from the baseline study conducted in 11 schools with 770 children. Generalized Linear Mixed Modeling was used to assess associations with disability. Results In Afghanistan, the prevalence of disability was much higher for girls (22.1%) than boys (12.9%), while in Pakistan 6.0% of boys and girls reported a disability. Peer violence victimization was strongly associated with disability in Afghanistan and marginally associated in Pakistan. In Pakistan, perpetration of peer violence was associated with disability. In both countries, disability was significantly associated with higher depression scores. Food insecurity was strongly associated with disability in Afghanistan. Conclusion Disability is highly prevalent in Afghanistan and Pakistan schools and this is associated with a greater risk of experiencing and perpetrating peer violence. read more It is important to ensure that all children can benefit from school-based prevention interventions. Background One key challenge in improving surgical care in resource-limited settings is the lack of high-quality and informative data. In Ethiopia, the Safe Surgery 2020 (SS2020) project developed surgical key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate surgical care within the country. New data collection methods were developed and piloted in 10 SS2020 intervention hospitals in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. Objective To assess the feasibility of collecting and reporting new surgical indicators and measure the impact of a surgical Data Quality Intervention (DQI) in rural Ethiopian hospitals. Methods An 8-week DQI was implemented to roll-out new data collection tools in SS2020 hospitals. The Kirkpatrick Method, a widely used mixed-method evaluation framework for training programs, was used to assess the impact of the DQI. Feedback surveys and focus groups at various timepoints evaluated the impact of the intervention on surgical data quality, the feasibility of a new data collection system, and the potential for national scale-up. Results Results of the evaluation are largely positive and promising. DQI participants reported knowledge gain, behavior change, and improved surgical data quality, as well as greater teamwork, communication, leadership, and accountability among surgical staff. Barriers remained in collection of high-quality data, such as lack of adequate human resources and electronic data reporting infrastructure. Conclusions Study results are largely positive and make evident that surgical data capture is feasible in low-resource settings and warrants more investment in global surgery efforts. This type of training and mentorship model can be successful in changing individual behavior and institutional culture regarding surgical data collection and reporting. Use of the Kirkpatrick Framework for evaluation of a surgical DQI is an innovative contribution to literature and can be easily adapted and expanded for use within global surgery.Determination of potential mobility of toxic trace metals in sediments under changing redox condition is important in ecological risk assessment. Current methods are limited in risk prediction in such dynamic environment. In this study, we have discussed the general disagreement from widely used methods (sediment quality guideline (SQGs), potential ecological risk index (PERI), risk assessment code (RAC) using BCR fraction information). In addition, the stable isotopic dilution method (IDM) was also modified to quantify metal lability in a microcosm experiment mimicking river bank sediment turning into anaerobic. The isotopically exchangeable Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn quantified by IDM (%Eincub) was used in the RAC to reveal the trend of risk during this process. Strong risks from Cd are suggested by the PERI and RAC as a result of high toxicity and mobility of the element, while SQGs suggests medium risk for Cu, Pb, and Zn in certain samples. The disagreement between the results of RAC assessed by metal lability (%Edry) and by BCR metal fractionation reflects the effect of sediment properties and source of metal contamination. The RAC based on the non-residual fractions is likely to overestimate the potential risk for most metals even there is a significant change in sediment Eh. The RAC assessed by %Eincub reveals that the variability in risk in response to the reducing Eh is not consistent. Large fluctuation in %Eincub for Cd (28.5%, 49.5%), Pb (27.6%, 18.2%), and Cu (14.4%, 24.7%) can shift the risks to a higher level in certain range of Eh in two sediments. In sediment with lower contents of metal binding phases (e.g. mineral oxides, organic matters), the release of metals can be more significant, thus higher ecological risk in changing redox condition.
