To find pesticidal lead compounds with high activity, a series of novel benzamides substituted with pyridine-linked 1,2,4-oxadiazole were designed by bioisosterism, and synthesized easily via esterification, cyanation, cyclization and aminolysis reactions. The structures of the target compounds were confirmed by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HRMS. The preliminary bioassay showed that most compounds had good larvicidal activities against mosquito larvae at 10 mg/L, especially compound 7a, with a larvicidal activity as high as 100%, and even at 1 mg/L was still 40%; at 50 mg/L, all the target compounds showed good fungicidal activities against the eight tested fungi. Moreover, compound 7h exhibited better inhibitory activity (90.5%) than fluxapyroxad (63.6%) against Botrytis cinereal. Therefore, this type of compound can be further studied.We investigated whether responses to as-needed intravitreal aflibercept injections (IAIs) for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) differed among patients based upon drusen characteristics in fellow eyes. 110 eyes from 110 patients with PCV received 3 monthly IAI and thereafter Pro re nata (PRN) IAI over 12 months. Patients were classified into 4 groups depending on fellow eye findings. Group 1 (n = 16) pachydrusen; Group 2 (n = 45) no drusen; Group 3 (n = 35) soft drusen; Group4 (n = 14) PCV/scarring. Best-corrected visual acuity improved at 12 months in all groups, but not significantly in Group 1 and Group 4; however, visual improvement was similar among the groups after adjusting baseline confounders. Group 1 had a significantly lower percentage of eyes needing retreatment (all p less then 0.001; Group 1 16.7%; Group 2 50.8%; Group 3 80%; Group 4 85.7%). The mean number of retreatments was least in Group 1 among the groups (all p-value less then 0.003; Group 1 0.50 ± 1.32; Group 2 1.73 ± 2.08; Group 32.71 ± 1.99; Group 3 2.71 ± 2.16). Patients with pachydrusen in fellow eyes were less likely to require additional IAI following the loading dose and may be ideal candidates for aflibercept monotherapy in their first year.High-performance polymer composites are being increasingly favored for structural applications. For this purpose, efforts are being focused on exploring the potential of high-performance thermoplastics and thermosets. Cyanate ester (CE) resin is a special thermoset that can be used at up to 400 °C without any considerable degradation; however, its tribological properties are not at the adequate level. Hence, it is needed to use this polymer in composite form with the fibrous/particulate reinforcement to impart better tribological properties and mechanical strength via a strong fiber-matrix interface. Carbon fiber/fabrics are at the forefront as reinforcement for specialty polymers. The tribological and tensile properties of cyanate ester (CE) composites-filled graphite, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and MoS2 micron-sized fillers reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) are investigated experimentally in a block-on-ring setup at 100 N, for 10 h, and with a sliding distance of approximately 10,000 m, against a hardened polished 100Cr6 steel shaft and diamond-like-coated (DLC) 100Cr6 steel shaft. The tribological properties of the composites including the coefficient of friction and specific wear rate are enhanced especially with the incorporation of graphite fillers. The friction coefficient and wear rate of the graphite-based composite was decreased significantly at 5 wt.% of graphite concentration. Further, at the same concentration, the graphite-based composite showed superior tensile properties as compared to the reference system owing to better dispersion and adhesion between the fibers and matrix. Tensile tests are performed to characterize the fiber-matrix interfacial adhesion and other strength properties.In Italy, discussions are currently ongoing to implement a front-of-pack nutrition label (FoPL) while a growing number of European countries are adopting the Nutri-Score. The effectiveness of the Nutri-Score among Italian consumers requires further investigation. This study compared five FoPLs among Italian participants (Health Star Rating system, multiple traffic lights, Nutri-Score, reference intakes, warning symbol) in terms of food choices and understanding of the labels by consumers. In 2019, 1032 Italian consumers completed an online survey in which they were asked to select one product they would likely purchase from a set of three foods with different nutrient profiles and then classify the products within the set according to their nutritional quality, first with no label and then with one of the five FoPLs on the pack. While no significant difference across labels was observed for food choices, the Nutri-Score demonstrated the highest overall performance in helping consumers to correctly rank the products according to their nutritional quality compared to the reference intakes (OR = 2.18 (1.50-3.17), p-value less then 0.0001). Our results provide new insights on the effectiveness of the Nutri-Score, which would be a relevant tool to inform Italian consumers on the nutritional quality of food products.Being a member of the nanofamily, carbon nanomaterials exhibit specific properties that mostly arise from their small size. Moreover, the acute toxicity of fullerenol, as one of the most commonly investigated members, was briefly presented in the final part of this review.
