Reading comprehension is difficult to improve for children with dyslexia because of the continuing demands of orthographic decoding in combination with limited working memory capacity. Children with dyslexia get special education that improves spelling, phonemic and vocabulary awareness, however the latest research indicated that special education does not improve reading comprehension. With the aim of improving reading comprehension, reading speed and all other reading abilities of children with dyslexia, Auto Train Brain that is a novel mobile app using neurofeedback and multi-sensory learning methods was developed. With a clinical study, we wanted to demonstrate the effectiveness of Auto Train Brain on reading abilities. We compared the cognitive improvements obtained with Auto Train Brain with the improvements obtained with special dyslexia training. Auto Train Brain was applied to 16 children with dyslexia 60 times for 30 minutes. The control group consisted of 14 children with dyslexia who did not have remedial training with Auto Train Brain, but who did continue special education. The TILLS test was applied to both the experimental and the control group at the beginning of the experiment and after a 6-month duration from the first TILLS test. Comparison of the pre- and post- TILLS test results indicated that applying neurofeedback and multi-sensory learning method improved reading comprehension of the experimental group more than that of the control group statistically significantly. Both Auto Train Brain and special education improved phonemic awareness and nonword spelling.Objective In 2010, the United States Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) created the National ALS Registry (Registry) to examine the epidemiology of ALS and potential risk factors. We are currently recruiting population-based controls for an epidemiologic case-control study to examine ALS environmental risk factors using this Registry. To date, we have recruited 181 non-diseased, population-based controls for comparison to Registry cases (n = 280). Here we report our recruitment methods for controls and the associated response rates and costs. Methods Eligible ALS cases had complete risk factor survey data, DNA analysis, and blood concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Age, sex, and county-matched controls were identified from commercial/consumer databases using a targeted landline phone sample. Eligible controls were consented, surveyed, and mailed the POPs' blood analysis consent form. Once consented, phlebotomy was scheduled. Results We mailed 3760 recruitment letters for 181 potential case-matches across 42 states between 9/2018 and 3/2020. After making phone contact and determining eligibility, 146 controls agreed to participate (response rate = 11.4%, cooperation rate = 22.8%). To date, 127 controls completed the survey and bloodwork. Though controls were matched to cases on age, sex, and county, unmatched characteristics (e.g. smoking) did not differ statistically. Interviewing and incentive costs are estimated at $211.85 per complete participation. Conclusions Recruiting matched population-based controls for comparison to cases from the Registry for a study involving completion of a detailed survey and blood specimen provision is relatively feasible and cost effective. This recruitment method could be useful for case-control studies of other rare disorders.Pyrolysis offers a more focused alternative to waste tyres treatment. Pyrolytic carbon black (CBp), the main product of waste tyre pyrolysis, and its modified species can be applied to tyre manufacturing realizing its high-value utilization. Modified pyrolytic carbon black/natural rubber composites prepared by a wet compounding (WC) and latex mixing process have become an innovative technology route for waste tyre remanufacturing. The main properties and applications of CBp reported in recent years are reviewed, and the main difficulties affecting its participation in tyre recycling are pointed out. The research progress of using WC technology to replace dry mixing manufacturing of new tyres is summarized. Through literature data and comparative studies, this paper points out that the characteristic of high ash content can be well utilized if CBp is applied to tyre manufacturing. This mini-review proposes a new method for high-value utilization of CBp. Giredestrant clinical trial The composite mixing of CBp and carbon nano-materials under wet conditions is conducive to the realization of their good dispersion in the rubber matrix. This provides a new idea for customer resource integration and connection of industry development between the tyre production industry and waste tyre disposal management.
Health-care professionals (HCPs) who are involved in an unanticipated adverse patient event, a medical error or a patient-related injury can become second victims. Being a second victim can lead to various symptoms, affecting the well-being of HCPs and possible turnover intentions or absenteeism. An increasing number of hospitals have implemented a second-victim support programme. To achieve unique insights into what works and what does not work in second-victim support programmes, HCPs' perceptions are needed. The aim of this study was to translate the Second Victim Experience and Support Tool (SVEST) into Danish and test the psychometric properties of the Danish version (D-SVEST).
The SVEST self-administered questionnaire was translated into Danish following the World Health Organization's guidelines. Assessments of the content validity, construct validity and internal consistency were performed based on 171 participants.
The study demonstrated that the D-SVEST is content valid and fits the a priori defined structure. Yet, four items revealed unacceptable factor loadings (<0.4) and item-rest correlations <0.3. All Cronbach's alpha estimates for these five dimensions exceeded 0.70. The dimensions on colleague and institutional support did not contribute to the validity.
In conclusion, the D-SVEST is considered relevant and valid for measuring second-victim experiences and the adequacy of support resources. However, we recommend a modification of items 9 and 25 to enhance the measurement scale in a Danish context. The D-SVEST can be used by health-care management at Danish hospitals.
