To achieve selective and rapid detection, a sensitive signal transducer with high surface area is necessary. In this work, a new paper sensor was fabricated using silver nanoprisms electrodeposited on the GQD conductive nano-ink (Ag NPr/GQDs nano-ink). A high surface area and suitable interface for anchoring biomolecules was achieved by electrodepositing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized with cysteamine (AuNPs-CysA) on the surface of the paper sensor altered by Ag NPr/GQDs nano-ink. To prepare a sensitive and selective bio-device for the recognition of Leishmania in human plasma specimens, a DNA-thiol probe was stabilized on the surface of the platform. Hybridization of DNA was evaluated by chronoamperometry (ChA). The engineered DNA-based paper biosensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity for the identification of Leishmania genomic DNA. Under optimum circumstances, a linear range was obtained using photographic paper from 1 μM to 1 zM and an ivory sheet from 1 nM to 1 zM. The lower limits of quantitation (LLOQ) on the photographic paper and ivory sheet were 1 zM. In addition, the designed DNA-based biosensor revealed well-defined performance in the recognition of mismatched sequences (single base, two base and three base mismatches) and selectivity.Over 70 years, the West of Scotland Haemophilia Centre in the UK has played a leading role in research, education and training. The last decade has brought significant diagnostic and therapeutic advances in the field of sarcoidosis including endobronchial ultrasound, F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and biologics. In this article we use clinical vignettes to discuss commonly encountered cases to illustrate and explain the application of these, and other advances.
A well-written manuscript published in a reputable journal is the deserved end-point of good research. It is important for postgraduates to be trained in scientific writing for their academic progression as well as the advancement of science.
A day-long workshop on scientific writing and publication was conducted at Raipur, India in February 2020. The medical postgraduate (UK equivalent Core Medical Trainee) participants were engaged with lectures, discussions and a practical session requiring critical appraisal of a manuscript. The lectures also discussed publication ethics and the perils of falling prey to predatory journals. see more Pre and post-workshop surveys were given to the participants to assess the impact of the workshop on the baseline knowledge of scientific writing and publishing.
Out of 69 participants, there were 67 (response rate 97%) and 41 (response rate 59%) respondents to the pre and post-workshop surveys respectively. The former identified a lack of baseline knowledge ranging from 6% for daining in scientific writing. Its inclusion in the medical postgraduate curriculum appears desirable.
Transport mobility and access to driving are important factors in social inclusion and wellbeing. Doctors have an important role to play in supporting safe mobility through applying the knowledge developed in the field of traffic medicine and incorporating state of the art national and international medical fitness to drive (MFTD) guidelines. Little is known about the profile of MFTD in postgraduate curricula for core and higher specialist training.
We profiled the inclusion of MFTD in the curricula of postgraduate core, higher and streamlined medical and surgical specialties in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and the UK.
All publicly available syllabi of basic and higher/ streamlined specialist training in postgraduate medical and surgical colleges in both jurisdictions were analysed (n = 122).
In Ireland 25% of basic training schemes included MFTD in the curriculum. Two-thirds of curricula of higher specialty and streamlined training schemes also included MFTD. For the UK 44% of core and 36% of higher training scheme curricula included MFTD. Just under one-quarter of all curricula reviewed included MFTD for more than one medical condition or treatment. Common topics in both Irish and UK curricula included seizures/epilepsy, syncope and visual disturbances.
There are notable deficits in MFTD training for specialists in Ireland and the UK. Common conditions which can significantly impair MFTD such as stroke, diabetes and alcohol use disorders are severely underrepresented and curricula should be revisited to include relevant training and guidance on MFTD for trainees.
