Sang kelinci bertanya dengan sang kura-kura, "Kame-san, kamu adalah yang paling lambat sedunia. Kok bisa lambat, sih?"
Kemudian, sang kura-kura menjawab, "Aku lambat? Untuk menentukan siapa yang lebih cepat, lihat ke sana. Ayo kita berlari sampai ke puncak gunung."
Akhirnya, sang kelinci dan sang kura-kura mulai beranjak memulai perjalanan. Hingga akhirnya, sang kelinci berkata kepada sang kura-kura, "Kame-san, seberapa cepat pun kamu, aku tetaplah lebih cepat."
Sang kelinci benar-benar cepat. Hingga sampailah ia di kaki/dekat gunung.
"Kame-san tidak akan bisa sampai di sini. Oleh karena itu, aku akan beristirahat di sini sebentar saja."
Akhirnya, sang kelinci memutuskan untuk tidur sejenak. Namun, hingga waktu telah beranjak ke siang hari, sang kelinci belum juga terbangun. Hingga matahari beranjak kian menjauh dari ufuk timur /halah/ sang kura-kura pun berhasil mendahului sang kelinci untuk sampai di puncak gunung.
Dan, kura-kura pun berkata kepada sang kelinci, "Usagi-san, kenapa kamu lambat?"
